I've only seen Gabbard last year and a few times over the summer and didn't come away impressed. If Smith plays the rest of the season like he did yesterday, it's no contest.

 

Ask me in a week and I'll give you another evaluation of the two after I see Gabbard against Holmes.

 

Smith was very impressive yesterday though scoring in all ways...behind the arc, in the lane, getting to the line, you name it, he did it.

 

The two already played head to head this year. Gabbard's team won. He won the matchup.

Just because Scott loses by 1 to Holmes doesn't mean they are now a top 20 team. They haven't been in the top 20 all season. They lost to both Boone and Highlands, as well as some other teams they should have beaten. They are a dangerous, good team, but their record is 15-7. So, are Highlands and Boone in the top 20 too?

No, part of the reason Boone won was because Boone's guard play was better in the game. Both teams had lots of turnovers, however. Smith will be one of the top PGs in NKY. Gabbard will be too.

ATM, it is a fact that the comment by a ref, that he or she, would not give Holmes any calls is true. I can name the ref(but I won't!!!) and could probably give you a second. Bad thing about it, they grew up in Covington. As far as the refs any where else in the state, including 10th region refs, will not give(and we don't need them to give us anything) any calls period. I can tell from the Charles Hurt through the net call until today. Is it because of the name,"Holmes",the city,"Covington", I could go on for another reason, but I would like to keep discussing on this site. It is a fact, I am a coach, most of all I am a sports fan, Holmes do not get any calls any where they go. :idunno:

Against Boone County Smith stats from NKy.com were:

 

11 points 8 assists 3 rebounds 3 steals 1 block and 6 turnovers.....2/5 from field and 7/9 from the line

 

Gabbards stats were:

 

11 points 5 assists 2 rebounds 6 turnovers 1 steal.....5/8 from field and 1/2 from 3 (have points listed as 11 appears they should add up to 13)

 

Gabbard is the better point guard right now as a junior but Smith is in the conversation now. Smith is leading N Ky in assists as a sophomore.

 

Both good players who make the players around them better. Both have the ability to score and are good defensively. I thought the most entertaining part of the Scott/Boone Co game was them going head to head. Would take either one of them to run my team right now!

Kellen Smith is going to be a fantastic player if he continues the progression he has made this season.

Tough break missing the free throws, but you do not see that situation much and there was a lot of pressure on him.

If he were to miss one, I thought he would miss the first one.

Still that should not overshadow the great game he played.

Scott has a really nice team as long as they take good shots and not turn the ball over. They hit a little rut there in losing to Dixie, but this team played Mason County very tight earlier this year at the Nest. Matter of fact they had a shot at the lead late, and missed and then it kind of got away from the them.

The 10th Region should be a doozy.

 

As for Holmes, they did what they had to do to win. Yes they were in foul trouble but Scott forced them into it.

Officials were shaky at times, but had no determining factor in the outcome. The last play was a foul.

 

Ricardo Johnson, the more I watch the more I like. Pittman may be getting more of the publicity, but Johnson is a player. He is just steady player, not prone to mood swings that some have.

Speaking of that, what is up with the Arnold kid picking up another technical foul? Some just do not get it I guess. The attitude that he has displayed probably would fit in with the Holmes team from about two years ago. You can not have meltdowns like that in key games especially overtime. The kid does have some talent but I would think scouts would be turned off when they see continual displays like yesterday.

Arnold lost his composure yesterday but let's not leave out the facts. Arnold was standing there waiting for the ball to be inbounded and Smith kept walking in to him with his chest up against Arnold but hands down to his side. Arnold simply took his forearm and kinda nudged Smith away from him. It wasn't like it was a malicious push or anything. Definetly the right call on the T but Smith was definetly provoking Arnold to do something. Arnold does need to grow up in situations like that though and not let his emotions get the best of him, especially when the game is as intense as it was.

 

He's just a sophomore. Still immature. I'm sure Coach Henley and Coach Wimzie will get it all corrected.

 

I also wouldn't say Holmes defense was too bad yesterday. At times they had breakdowns, but overall I didn't think their defense was too bad. Scott just simply made contested shots.

I agree 100% with this. EZ said it best, it is, what it is. These kids at Holmes are great. They will continue to have the odds stacked against them because of where Holmes is located [Covington Inner City]. But to be honest, as a life long Bulldog I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm youst to it.

There may be a few refs who always call bad games against Holmes but honestly the Johnson Brothers, Riley, and Pittman get away with a lot more than some of us realize, simply because they're all great kids and always show respect towards the refs, no matter what the call is.
