January 16, 200917 yr If the truth was known the kids want to go to school, cold or otherwise. It's the teachers and the adult faculty that want that 4 day weekend with MLK day on Monday;).
January 16, 200917 yr What about kids in Northern states. My dad is in Minnesota and it is like -25 without factoring in the wind chill. Take the proper precautions and they will be fine. Exactly. No reason to cancel school because it's cold.
January 16, 200917 yr Im guessing it could be a money thing (as well as just being too cold to out). I'm sure the school systems save a ton of money by not heating the buildings like they normally would.
January 16, 200917 yr Back in my day ( 5 years ago ) we never canceled school because it was cold

Thankyou for this HT. I wanted to say this but couldn't think of a good comparison. I forget how much colder it is north of here. But yes I think that the kids should bundle up and head to school. I would not be opposed to a one or two hour delay, as I do recognize that for this area it's out of the norm, but that doesn't mean that we can't adapt and over come. It's not like this cold air just blind sided us, I recall last Thursday telling everyone how horribly cold it was supposed to be this week, what do ya know, the weather guys got one right.

I'm sure the school systems save a ton of money by not heating the buildings like they normally would. Not for just a day, maybe for a week or so, but not just for one day. If it was just one day they'd have to know they were cancelling school in advance, well in advance so that they could turn off the heat. But then the next day that they decide to have class they'd have to turn it off way before the students got there so that the whole school could warm up.....

Yeah I don't think they could turn it off anyways. Wouldn't that make the pipes burst? I guess they would probably turn it down though.

No they'd keep the water heaters on, and just turn off the heat and electricity. NKU actually had the power off for the most part in all but 2 or 3 buildings throughout winter break, saves the school TONS of money.
January 16, 200917 yr A lot of the schools in Southern Ohio are delayed and a lot in KY - Greenup, Carter, Rowan, Lawrence are closed today because of cold, my husband and myself on the other hand will be in a inservice today for teachers.:irked:

January 16, 200917 yr From the stories my wife has told me, I am very greatful that her school is still open today. 84% of her students are free or reduced lunch... these same students live in homes with no heat other than a wood fire. If the schools were closed, the kids would be left in a cold house to survive.

January 16, 200917 yr 2-hour delay in Mason County today. At least the sun is out while the kids are waiting on the buses. And maybe it's just me, but Mason County must have more kids driven to school by their parents than practically anywhere else. The lines to pick kids up in the afternoon at the elementary school and the middle school are HUGE!
January 16, 200917 yr Cant be serious with this weather can you?! Including wind chill its close to -25 degrees on NKU's campus!
