Highlands Baseball

Featured Replies

Anyone understand why there is no freshman baseball at Highlands? With most other schools having frosh ball, seems like a disadvantage for Highlands not to have one. Maybe title 9 concerns?

I think your right on it...

Can't be Title IX because there is no girls frosh softball league in NKY...It has to do with people making up excuses not to have one. If the powers to be wanted a boys frosh team there would be one...PERIOD!!!:thumb:

100% agree.:thumb:

I'm just going to say this will be a rebuilding year and maybe more to come.

Curious to know who are the powers that don't want a frosh team and what their reasons are?

Could be interesting. I think that raiderbird maybe right in his analysis of Title 9 and the frosh team...

Maybe the coaches from years ago didn't care enough to get the team ready. Hense the reason we have a new coach. A coach that wants the best for his team.
That's a pretty unfair remark. And totally untrue--at least, in nearly all cases.

Glad to hear it was resolved. Doesn't sound like it was much of an issue if they got it worked out day one.

I'm far from an expert on Title IX so I need to ask.

How does almost every other school in NKY - including very small schools - field a freshman team without having any Title IX issues? What possible Title IX issues could be involved here?

I know for a fact the previous coach knew the battle he was up against with coaching at Highlands and i know the new head baseball coach knows what to expect. It's a no brainer what sport gets first dibs, but at what costs.

I probably know even less about it, but don't schools have to have roughly the same number of girls participating in sports as boys? If yes, and a boys team is added, the school must increase overall participation by the equivalent number girls.

No school in NKY fields a freshman girls softball team. There is no league for them to play in. HHS fields all of the other spring teams for girls so what's the issue there that none of the other schools are facing?

The same reasons that there are not 6th grade basketball teams. The administration and the almighty dollar. If we were talking about an arts club of some sort it would be started tomorrow.

I believe is on target. It doesn't have to do with whether you can or cannot offer a boy's freshman baseball team simply because the girls do or don't have their own freshman team. It has more to do, as bronc stated, that both sexes are given equal opportunhities numbers-wise to compete in sports at their schools. The sports don't have to match up vis-a-vis.

BTW, any plans in the works for Highlands to upgrade the field they play on at Highlands Park? I know it's not their own field and perhaps the city won't even let them do anything to it, but it is a shame. The field could be quite nice, but seems to be very poorly maintained the times I've seen it.
