Highlands Baseball

I think the coach is making an effort to accomodate both sides of the coin. I think the overall success of his plan for spring break this year will dictate how he handles it in the future. He's been around long enough and is smart enough to know that the old way wasn't good enough to be successful on the field. Also like others have stated, with a little success Coach B will be able to tweak the plan to get the best of both worlds.

I suggest that before anyone posts negative comments about the HHS football or baseball program not working, or not working together, if you don't have a kid involved in both of the programs, go up to the high school on Monday-Friday afternoons and watch how both programs are operating, and operating together. Coach Dale and Coach JB are working together. JB lives baseball, like Coach Dale lives football. We are blessed to now not only have one, but two good programs like this at HHS. Let Coach JB coach! He will bring HHS baseball to a top level in a couple of years, if not this year! The HHS baseball players know what is expected of them, just as the football players do. If you want to go on spring break, any player can go, but he risks the possibility of losing his position to someone else that plays baseball during spring break. That was clearly explained at the baseball meeting. Sorry about your luck! Coach JB plays the best player at each position, he doesn't play favorites. The HHS baseball team is heading down south to play some games during spring break, so the kids get some enjoyment out of spring break while playing baseball. Obviously, Coach JB put a lot of thought into this spring break trip. You can find the HHS baseball coaches e mail on the HHS website. Volunteer your time and services and help build this program instead of criticizing the program when the first pitch hasn't been thrown. Also, like HHS football, HHS baseball has opened the line of communication, between parents, students, and the coach. He has everyone's e mail and everyone is informed about the current baseball upcoming events. At the baseball meeting, Coach JB invited any student from the 8th grade on up to work out in the off season with his team. The football team works out on M,W,F and the baseball team works out on T,Th. Coach JB purposely picked these days to work with the football program and allow kids to get involved in baseball. Working out M-F to play two sports, then doing homework after that, is a lot of time and commitment for a kid, but it is my understanding that JB makes the work outs not only beneficial but fun for kids, just like football does. As far as boys sports go at HHS, football will understandably always be #1, but baseball will be a program that we all will be proud of, and will be glad that our sons participate in, and from what I have seen will be #1A. Spend some hot afternoons this spring attending a game and supporting HHS baseball. HHS football and HHS baseball, two great programs!

Wow this might be the most impressive build up of any coach I have ever seen especially one that has never coached a varsity game in his life. I do not know him or how he will function but it seems that everybody is expecting an immediate change in the program. I hope he can do it.

The one thing that impresses me based on the posts is his communcation with parents. That is a great place to start.

I also don't really know him, but he appears to be a very genuine person, something parents always appreciate. Nothing worse than walking away from a meeting with your kid's teacher or coach feeling like you've just been fed a bunch of BS.

You will want to get to know him. Your right he is a very genuine person and he is not affraid to have parents talk him about issues. He won't feed you any bs. If your kid is not getting playing time and you question him he will tell you straight up what the problem is. Jeremy is somebody who cares deeply about baseball, his players, and the school.

I heard there is going to be about 50 to 60 kids trying out this year. This is going to bring out some great talent.

Awesome :thumb: Now lets get that freshman team going next year! With the increase in amount of kids trying out, I can't imagine there'll be too many spots for 8th graders on the JV team. With no middle school team, we need somewhere for the 8th graders (maybe even 7th) to get involved with Highlands Baseball.

Very good point Bronc. Freshman baseball falls right in line with 6th grade basketball teams at the middle school. Look for all of these to be offered next year if the varsity coaches buy in and the administration can be convinced that they are for the betterment of the school, student body and athletic programs.

This will give middle school kids who might not make jv a chance to develop more and also the won't be discouraged to try out in the future. Also this will make the talent level increase a ton.

How about the froshman not having a chance first?

Obviously they would have first crack, but if you get to a point where your freshmen and sophomores are JV players the 7&8th grades are counted on, with undeveloped freshmen to play freshmen level baseball.

If you are a talented 8th grader and you deserve to make the team, there is no doubt JB would put the kid on the team. However, although the opportunity was offered, absolutely no 8th grader took the opportunity to work out with the team the past couple of months. Coach JB specifically stated at the parent's baseball team meeting that he want players with not only talent, but those that give effort and leadership. JB has the same philosophy as the HHS football program. Tryouts are next week. Those that "deserve" to make the team, will make the team.

I agree. JB was once a talented 8th grader that made the team. Him and Kyle Pfetzer were the only middle schoolers that year thast made it.
