What kind of upgrades are needed and is the city helping in any way besides cutting the grass on a weekly basis? Good that the boosters are helping out and I'm sure Coach Baioni is very pleased with it.

The money approved is for Coach Baioni to purchase much needed materials and equipment to improve the fields playing conditions. He along with the City's Rec. Director are working on details for short and long term needs at the facility. Yes, the city has a responsibility to the field, which I'm sure they're going to continue to honor. Coach Baioni is very pleased and ready to go.................

...and the "wheels are in motion" to upgrade the Girls softball facility...ie "Death Valley". And provide some ...security?...for the facility. And no it wasn't a title IX thing...just the RIGHT thing to do. Courtesy of the Boosters and those who support the Booster program at HHS.

Jake Turner told me that he was going to play. If he has changed his mind, I am not aware. Good solid arm and player.

I hear the count is approximately 60 for the baseball tryouts this year.

Last night the HHS Athletic Boosters approved $$ to upgrade the field the baseball uses for practice and games. This is another step in the right direction for the program.

Are those upgrades going to be imploding the thing and starting over? Just curious what is going to be done. First thing would be adding dirt to the infield to level it out and to also fix the many divots in the outfield. Get the outfield seeded so that it can be grass rather than weeds. Last but not least, get that grass infield in shape. Things are definitely on the upswing for this program, now the athletes (football players) need to come out for the team. There have been and still are many successful youth baseball teams with Fort Thomas kids on them that could really push this program to the heights of CovCath and Beechwood if only they would continue to play. Here's to hoping.

Jack, everything you listed except imploding the field are exactly what the Coach has planned for the field and it's condition.:thumb:

Not that they probably need any more suggestions on how to improve the ballfield (but I'll make one nonetheless), but if they hung a net down the first base side, it would probably pay for itself in saved baseballs in two seasons' time. Man, they must go through an absolute tons of balls!

Best thing that could happen to the baseball program would be KHSAA eliminating spring football.

I guess. I think it can stay and both be successful. The coaches like each other and work well together. It will work out. BTW, it's not spring football, it's "Spring Break".

Wecome hawkeye! Second post and already a "radical"...or should I say "heretic" ???

Both! Yes, spring break is an issue for quite a few kids and families in Ft. Thomas. But I can't think of another sport that has out-of-season training leading up to full contact drills and scrimmage like spring football. You all know this as well as I but there is a large number of outstanding baseball players in the senior and junior classes that have yet to even see a baseball..........

I couldn't agree more. Kids dont play baseball because they want to go on Spring Break. It has nothing to do with spring football. Every other school has Spring Break Policies which is plain and simple. You go on Spring Break, you don't play baseball...period. Many of the students at Highlands just dont have the commitment that most schools have. For Highlands to be as successful as the CovCaths and Beechwoods this attitude needs to change.

Well this year the coaches are giving a little with the spring break which allows kids to do both. But next year I'm sure the policy will change. So hopefully a successful season this year will encourage the kids next year to stay home and play baseball. With football scaling back in the summer, it will open up vacation times for families. So any and all quality players that wants to play baseball will be able to and still go on vacation in the summer.

So there will be a one year hiatus of "hostilities" then HHS baseball will fall back to the same position it was in before the new regime? That doesn't make sense to me. If the "compromise" works, why not stay with it. Have sustained success before tinkering with such a hardened stance on Spring Break.

I think Coach has to do this right away when he enters because he can't just spring it on them. I like the fact that he is taking the stance, but he knows that it may cost him some great players. That's a big chance.
