Robbie Cano Derek Jeter Melky Cabrera Hideki Matsui Jorge Posada Shelley Duncan Joba Chamberlain Chien-Ming Wang Andy Pettitte All of these players signed amateur contracts with the Yanks. Technically, Matsui was not an "amateur" but I included him. Cano, Posada, Jeter, and Chamberlain makes a pretty good list... Matsui's inclusion on the list is laughable. Jeter, Posada and Pettitte popped out of the farm system well over a decade ago. Duncan can't even stay in the majors. That leaves Cano, Cabrera, Chamberlain and Wang ... and Cabrera lost his job last season and was sent back to the minors. I still think Phil Hughes will be a good pitcher for the Yankees.

And it would cut into the players big time salaries. A minimum salary doesn't hurt big-market teams; it forces small-market teams to be competitive. The Pirates have one of the league's lowest payrolls, yet they receive some of the largest revenue-sharing checks. Without a minimum salary, they are not forced to spend any of that money. Having a minimum and maximum cap forces the small market teams to at least put money into their players instead of spending very little and collecting on the Luxury Tax.

I didn't know salary caps put a minimun payroll. Personally, I feel baseball needs, at the very least, non guarenteed contracts. December 25, 200817 yr Football has a minimum that owners have to spend. If they do not spend "X" amount they get penalized (taxed). It would be interesting to see baseball go to a cap but if you're the players union you never agree to it because you are getting huge amounts of money to the players. And I love the Yanks so this doesn't really bother me that much.

Especially, for pitchers. I wouldn't rest well knowing I forked out that much for CC and seen pitchers like Wood and Prior drop of the map in a season. However, he has proven to be durable, but ya never know.

Between the Yanks/Bama/Cats I had a nice run. I have followed the Cats B-Ball since I moved to Kentucky in 1965.
