These guys are playing BASEBALL!!! They are playing a game that in the grand scheme of things means NOTHING! What happens if they win the World Series next year?? Nothing, they start over in the spring. Sports salaries are out of control, and the Yankees are just making it worse.

 

It is a business. They are in the business of baseball. They are more profitable then every other team and they can use the profits they earn anyway they see fit. I didn't hear anyone screaming from the roof tops when the Raiders set the record for highest NFL team salary last off season. Your problem is with the Yankees and it should be with the MLB and Bud for allowing a team to operate this way.

 

By the way, the total salaries for the Yankees this coming season are actually lower than they were for the Yankees last season (at least to this point). They are lowering payroll in this tough economic climate. Some would call that fiscal responsibility.

I think it is irresponsible and despicable that the yankees are throwing this kind of money around while the economy is struggling so much. It makes me sick to see them give 400 million dollars to 3 guys, when that kind of money could support 40,000 families who are struggling to eat...

 

Thats a point I forgot to make. I understand the the players help raise the money so they get paid, but I mean families I know live on 60,000 a year with two kids and aren't begging on the streets at all, so I don't by any of the "I am trying to feed my family" stuff put out by athletes these days. I mean don't you think it beginning to get out of control.

Yes, I understand that the Sox and Rays do go out and get players but they also develop a lot more players than the Yankees do through there farm systems.

This is why I seldom watch major league baseball anymore. I quit being an observer after the 1994 strike and the Player's Union, wiped out the World Series.

 

The rich get richer and the poor rarely go anywhere. Small market baseball franchises can't keep up with the Yankees. It doesn't always spell success for the Yanks, but it does too often for me.

Im not sure how you get that i'm biased against the Yankees. They signed 3 players this offseason for 400 million dollars. Who else has done that?? It's disgusting.

The is a salary cap in football, the reason the Raiders set the record is because the cap for all of the teams was raised and they were the ones that maxed it out. All of the other teams were right there in the neighborhood with the Raiders. In MLB the Yankees will spend right at $100 Million more than the 2nd biggest spenders--its apples and oranges.

 

Also the only reason the Yankees payroll is lower at this point than last year is that they only have part of their big league roster filled. By the time they fill out their roster it will be higher than next season and, if they add any more free agents signifigantly higher.

 

Even with the signings it still guarantees nothing. The last couple of seasons the Yankees could run out a lineup that featured a player that had made an All-Star team at each position and they finished 3rd. I'm not going to sit around and whine about who the Yankees have. I'm happy with the way the Red Sox are ran and they've more than proven that they are every bit the Yankees equal and then some where it counts--on the field, not in the wallet.

I dont count Matsui as a developed player considering the fact that he played in Japan before he came to the Yankees. He didnt even go through the farm systems. Those four names in Cano, Posada, Jeter and Joba are pretty good names but IMO they dont come close to those of the Sox or even the Rays. The Sox list inculdes Dustin Pedroia(who in just two years has already became ROY and MVP), Kevin Youkilis, Jed Lowrie, Jacoby Ellsbury, Justin Masterson, Clay Buchholz (who has thrown a no-hitter), Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester (who has thrown a no-hitter.)

A salary cap could actually hurt smaller market teams such as the Marlins. And would you all rather the Yankee ownership pocket the money?

In fact, you could argue that because of franchising of players in the NFL, the Raiders free agent contracts have a greater direct impact on each and every NFL team than the Yankees spending has on other baseball teams. Simply put, if you want to argue the merits of the salary system in baseball, do that. Don't hate on teams that have run themselves well and try to dictate how they can spend their profits. The problem is salaries in sports are crazy, but the Yankees aren't the only guilty party. People use their bias to try to argue a point and it clouds the real issue. Let's debate the real issue.

Oh I read them. Several of them were just misleading, at best. For example, the NFL statement IS apples to oranges. The difference between the Raiders and the next closest NFL payroll? $6 Million. The difference in the top spending team in the NFL in 2007 and the #2? $6 Million. The difference in the top spending team in the NFL in 2005 and the #2? $6 Million. It even becomes less of a difference when you consider that the salary cap has increased steadily so the percentage of payroll is even closer now than the last couple of years. Also with the NFL's revenue sharing agreement the teams don't get to have their own television deals and almost every franchise is on a level playing field--it just simply isn't that way in MLB. As for hating on teams that run themselves well--I didn't do that. The Red Sox right now are the best run franchise in the majors. I was just hating on the Yankees because they're the Yankees and it is my nature. It just makes it better when the Sox beat them. :thumb::thumb:

 

Also your statement about the Yankees cutting payroll is not true either. They had a team salary of $209,081,579 last season and it is at $196 Million with just 16 players. That's not even including Igawa's contract. It will easily be more than last season unless they fill all of those roster spots with minimum salary players and we both know that won't be the case. Actually, I forgot about Nick Swisher--he puts them at $200 Million+.
