We can only hope the bloodlines are still running deep in the present day Hounds and they can have a shot to play for all the marbles. Seems winning maybe genetic as well.

Just as a curiosity that I had, I did a little research on northern Kentucky teams vs. (what is considered) Kentucky mountain teams. I know this means nothing as far as this game is concerned (neither does comparing scores), northern KY teams has 2 wins in 9 games against KY mountain teams this year.

 

Beechwood had a win over Prestonsburg and Highlands had a win over Johnson Central.

 

Lynn Camp beat Dayton; Whitley beat Newport; South Laurel and Knox Central beat Holy Cross, Johnson Central beat CovCath and Holmes; Prestonsburg beat Cooper.

 

Like I said I know this means nothing. I was just curious over some comments from another thread.

I liked the post and you are correct about who was playing up in class. But I think you would agree that the mountain team was the clear favorite in every game they won except perhaps Lynn Camp over Dayton. I do think those games help prove that the better teams win games regardless of where they are located. Bad or average N. Ky teams won't beat good mountain teams and vice versa. It is more about the quality of the team than where they are located. That said, NCC vs. Corbin is about how good these two teams truly are and how they match up -not what district they are in. Both teams are very good and it will be a great game.

This matchup just keeps sounding better and better. I am going to make a prediction that the player of the game will be Kues, the NCC QB. He is experienced, poised and can make big plays with his feet or his arm. If it is a tight game, he will make the play needed to win.

Corbin will be much more physical in this game than they were last year, a game that the kids know that they should have won if they had played close to their capabilities. A steady dose of Watkins, Campbell and Taylor will give the Hounds a very good chance Friday night.

 

I seem to remember a team that made it to the 2A finals back in 1977 with a Watkins, Taylor and Freeman in that backfield as well. I just remembered that all three of their dads were on the 76 championship and the 77 runner-up team..............

 

How do you figure that? NewCath gift wrapped the first half to Corbin last year. They had 5 snaps go over the QBs head that either resulted in TOs or significant loss of yards, and Corbin still only had an 8 pt lead at half, which they lost. If Corbin wins this year, I'll give them all the credit in the world b/c this is about as well as NewCath's offense can play. It's their defense that needs to show some improvement, which is hard to do this late in the year.

NewCath also beat Newport, Holy Cross, and gave one away against CovCath. Cooper and Dayton had very tough years this year up here, so I'm not surprised their luck wasn't any better down there. Everyone knows that Johnson Central was game, but the other losses aren't something that would incite panic up here.

It will be a great game, but I think NCC will come home with the win. No doubt there will be a large fan base coming down to Corbin to support their Breds.

How many games has NCC played on real grass this year?

 

They practice everyday on grass on the school's campus. They only play their games on Newport high school's turf.

First and foremost let me congradulate both teams on their success this year. Two very formidable football programs, and look where we are again! NCC has some very good athletes as usual and a coaching staff that sure knows how to get it done. With that being said let me throw in my two-cents. You took it to the Hounds last year and we have been working very hard to get back to this point.

 

The key to any football game is not and never will be who beat who and by how much, The key is the ability of the coaching staff to prepare their players to perform tasks (usually different every week) that will give their team an edge. This task becomes more duanting as the talent level increases. Hence State semis'.....

 

It is my opinion that Corbins' talent level and athleticism is as good as any team ever fielded. This will help the coaching staff with their game plan for friday. We must use our speed/strength to slow down the QB. He can't be allowed to stand in the pocket or he will pick a defense apart. That being said, when he runs we must spy him, and stop him for short yardage. I know eaiser said then done. Our dbs' can stay with them for awhile, but we must get to the QB, When he hands off to the RB it will be up to the big four and linebackers to make the plays.

 

Now for the offense. It's very simple, They must control the LOS this friday! With all the athletes we have you can't beat a great team without this, The rest is easy. run, run, run, run/pass. run, run, run, run/run. Corbin has in their arsenal a football player who cannot be stopped, they did not use him last year like they should have. Hopefully we have learned. Corbin's QB, a 4 year starter who made the Herald Leader top 25(whatever they call it)had by far the worst game of his distinguished career. Sure NCC gets credit for a lot of it, but he clearly just did not have it that night. Corbin still may have won if not for the td pass that was dropped(lost it in the lights) very late in the game that would have given them the lead. In hindsight, Corbin also had some bullets that were left in the holster last year that could have made the difference.

I forgot about the dropped TD pass by Watkins. I'm assuming that is what was being referred to when it was said that a player has a little something to prove. I hope he does but I don't want him to think too much about it. What's done is done and I hope he didn't put last years loss on his shoulders. I just hope he goes out there and plays to his capabilities. If he does, there will not be a better back on that field.
