Highlands 61 Covington Catholic 0

Featured Replies

It sounds like the entire Highlands team had quite a night. Did HHS have any injuries in the game?

When the team came out after the half, it looked like Fennell had an icebag on his wrist. Anyone else catch that or hear anything of it?

I do have a problem with a high school QB sliding to avoid a hit and not getting a 1st down because of it. His coaches also had a big problem with it, and how do you think his teammates felt about it? Some of the football players I hung around with in school would have a real problem with it. As far as quitting, yes they were on the field, But to have let the JV team drive and score on them and for their 1st team not be able to move the ball against the 3 and 4the string, well that says something.

Now on to Highlands: fantastic job boys. I hate to start naming specific players because EVERY Highlands player did exceptionally well, but I have to point out several in my post.

On D I thought Blake Newman played the game of his life. Not only the interception for a td, but all the tackles he made. Ollie Head again had some fantastic hits. Pass coverage was exceptional by everyone. Kudos Bardo, Collinsworth, Head, Hogue and Buten. LBing crew again played superb. As did the D line. Rosenhagen, Dierig, Welz and Beck did a great job of not only shutting down the run, but keeping pressure on Isler all night.

On O, I thought our O line did a fantastic job. No disrespect intended to the CovCath O line, but tonight demonstrated which O line was the better one. Kudos to Coach Turner for again turning out another exceptional O line. Nick Martin did a great job filling in for Grubbs. I know that Nick would have rather played LBer in this game, but he answered the call and performed fantastically. There were some serious hits being layed by the O linemen. Dempsey, Schlosser, Combs and Bardgett (along with Martin tonight) are really coming together well. Not only were there big holes for the running backs, Guidugli had a whole lot of time to pass the ball. And pass the ball he did, doing so very well to Roller (who had several clutch receptions on drag routes) and to Collinsworth. Hogue also had a clutch 4th down reception for a first down. I think it was our third td, on which drive we had several penalties that kept setting us back, that really impressed me. But the O persevered and kept converting for first downs and eventually a td. In my opinion, it was the most impressive drive of the first half. Head and Fennell again showed why at almost every high school in the state they would be starting running backs.

Special teams were superb. On the couple of kickoffs that Rosenhagen didn't make the endzone, the coverage was exceptional. Nothing to say about punt coverage because it didn't happen. Because of CovCath's plan to punt the ball away from Collinsworth towards the sideline, there weren't many opportunities for the punt return squad to show its stuff last night. And of course our one kickoff return to start the game was exceptional. Just a great return by Collinsworth made possible by exceptional blocking by the kick return squad.

And I was very proud of the back ups in the second half. Great blocking and some exceptional running for Spencer Bankamper. I couldn't have been happier for any kid. With all the injuries that young man has persevered through during his football career, he deserved a night like last night, not only running the ball but on D also. Great job Spencer. And the entire D in the second half played well. Just a fantastic job boys. I know the coaches were on your tails after giving up a lot of points to the Dixie starters last week. You all responded extremely well to the coaching and played very well tonight.

Enjoy the victory, but quickly get focused on Hoptown. Go down there and lose to them and the sweetness of last night's victory will turn bitter fast.

Corey Compton also had some nice runs last night. Nice to see, especially considering that he's a soph.

I do agree about O Line. Huge transformation from 1st game. OLIne Coach Scott Turner is the man :thumb:

Every CovCath alumni always says "it was SO much better when I was there" but I am ashamed right now. Between what BF said about the CovCath student section, reports I have heard from students, and the state of some athletic programs, this is pitiful and embarrassing.

I remember a few years ago (particularly in 2004, right around when the basketball team went to Rupp) I was so incredibly proud to tell people that I went to CovCath. I don't know what happened.

You should always be proud of your alma mater. A not so great football team means nothing in the big picture.:thumb:

Coupled with what Birdsfan says, and the general attitude that a decent sized portion of CCH students have towards education, athletics, CCH spirit, spirituality, and life in general, it is making me feel so.

To be quite frank about it, Brossart has turned a program which Rodenburg left in mint condition into a "laughing stock." CCH players, coaches, fans, and alumni will be embarrassed for a long time. It is time for me to swallow my pride and say something I never thought I would say when I was a player two years ago: CCH has the occasional class/ comb of coaches&players that allow them to be competitive with Highlands. That being said, CCH does not compare to Highlands on any level. Highlands could have beat CCH by 100 tonight w/out there starting running back (no exaggeration). The administration at CCH needs to decide what is important RIGHT NOW. This is absolutely shameful. I think it would show a great step of maturity if Coach Brossart acknowledged that he is not suited to be the coach of such a prestigious program. I can no longer pretend that coaching is not the problem, this is horrendous. I believe as I said in a previous post, just because the o-line is 6'2 260 lbs. on average doesnt mean that Brossart has made them players at all. This was showed tongiht. Highlands 3rd string could have beat CCH. This is horrible. This is 20X worse than the playoff lose last year, in that a few plays caused that game to get out of hand and the seniors realized their season was, in fact, over and tanked. This is horrible. I dont know to phrase this any other way. Brossart is lucky if he has his job on Monday. Highlands fans may say it is due to a lack of talent, I do not believe it. Not this bad. Brossart is simply to immature to be the head coach at CCH, I am getting off here now, but will post a thorough critique of the CCH program tomorrow (after this settles in).

I know that a request has been made to not insult the coaching staff at CCH. But I do agree on a couple of assessments in this post. Many of the HHS kids who played on the East team in the All Star game last June under Coach Brossart walked away from the game with the very same impressions. Very insulting to them and very casual in his preparation towards the big game.

Cov Cath had potential talent on the field last night. I am confident changes will be made at the end of the season. I am hopeful the program will rebound so we can get back to a decent, friendly neighborhood rivalry. :thumb:

Congrats to the entire Highlands football team for their amazing display of athletic talent in the game last evening. The 'birds played nearly flawless football... heck, I really do not know what they could have done to have played better.

I was proud of the sportsmanship displayed by both teams... hard to maintain when a score gets so lopsided that early in the contest. A true sign of class by both teams indeed!

When the team came out after the half, it looked like Fennell had an icebag on his wrist. Anyone else catch that or hear anything of it?

Yeah I saw the same. I dont think it was anything major though. What was major though was possibly Fennells play of the game when he picked up a hard blitzing backside block of VanSaint. Tony G owes Fennell a dinner or something because if he doesnt pick him up then look out. That was a big collision there and considering the size difference Tyler got his job done as usual. That excellent block turned a potential disaster into a successful TD bomb to Collinsworth. :thumb:

Congrats Birds on a well played game. You came out prepared to play this game . Stay focused and play as if it's your last game. Go Bird's!!

I thought that CovCath did a decent job stuffing the middle. Highlands made huge yardage going to the outside and the downfield blocking was excellent. CovCath is very slow and the secondary does not cover or tackle well, but the interior linemen gave it all they had and Van Sant played hard from beginning until the end. I thought CovCath would spread it wider when they saw that they could not get to the outside to counter the speed of the Bluebird backs. That did not seem to happen. Highlands has more than half a dozen running backs who could start almost anywhere other than Highlands.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! :scared::scared::scared:

Congrats H!

Academics have and will continue to be the number one focus of CovCath! It has always been that way and it will continue to always be that way.

As you grow older you will understand that the fun you had playing games was just that, fun but the education you received at CovCath will pay off many, many times throughout your life!

Well said!!!

...I ask that HHS not comment on Dave Brossart as our coach. You simply do not know the circumstances.
For the record, the question you reference was raised by a Cov Cath person. I didn't see any HHS people commenting on it.
