Dusty sat Dickerson in favor of Patterson.

Dusty is not a good fit for what the Reds are trying to do.

Dusty has a major man-crush on Patterson, for some strange reason, and requested he be brought in. On the plus side, Patterson is 3-for-7 with an HR and 3 RBIs the last two nights. One more good game and he may get above Mendoza.

It's not that Dusty is necessarily that enamored with Patterson, but that he simply distrusts young players and prefers to go with veterans when given the opportunity.

 

This kind of thing happened all the time when Dusty managed the Cubs. Jim Hendry would bring up a young player, seemingly with a particular role in mind, and Dusty would simply choose to sit the guy. Hendry never really called him on it because, in my opinion, he was afraid to challenge Dusty, who had gotten more credit than he deserved for the Cubs' run in 2003 and was popular with the fans in the beginning of his tenure.

 

When Jocketty was in St. Louis, this sort of thing never occurred. He and Tony LaRussa were on the same page, and the Cardinals never brought up a young player to rot on the bench. Every player had a role, and he was used in that role.

 

This is another reason I think Jocketty will relieve Dusty of his duties at the end of the season. Dusty isn't his kind of manager and he isn't the kind of manager the Reds need at this point.

He "earned" the contract because the Reds thought he was worth it. The problem is the Reds' to deal with ... they made a poor decision, and they will pay for it for a couple of more years.

It would be a great, great move if Dusty was let go at the end of this season. Not so much because Dusty didn't get the job done, but the Reds need youth on the field and it's obvious Dusty might not want to do that.

 

Can't wait to see how it plays out.

I think what's puzzling is, you hire a manager known to slant toward the veterans. However, you have young players at the corners, at two of the OF slots, and 60% of the rotation. You also get rid of Dunn and Griffey, when the preseason consensus was they weren't going to be around in 2009 anyway. The franchise has a clear lack of direction that must give Jocketty headaches at the end of every day. On the flip side, there aren't many other GMs I'd rather have trying to find the right direction than Jocketty

One thing that continues to irritate and baffle me is the players that are still being used. Why are Corey Patterson, Jolbert Cabrerra and Josh Fogg still being used. I can't imagine any of those three being in the Reds plans for next year. Why not let Dikckerson, Stubbs, Bailey, and Maloney showcase themselves for the next month and a half? It seems like the Reds always play old veterans whom they have no plans for instead of giving the young guys in the minors a shot.
