August 13, 200818 yr 2007 Stats Cordero - 66 G ,63.1 IP, 52 H, 44 SV, 2.98 ERA Rivera - 67 G, 71.1 IP, 68 H, 30 SV, 3.15 ERA K-Rod - 64 G, 67.1 IP, 50 H, 40 SV, 2.81 ERA Papelbon - 59 G, 58.1 IP, 30 H, 37 SV, 1.85 ERA With the exception of Papelbon, Cordero's numbers were right up there with the so called 'elite' closers last year. And did you make the same comparison for 2005 and 2006? Cordero isn't a bad pitcher, but he's not an elite closer and I don't know if any closer is worth $12M a year, especially for a small-market team.
August 13, 200818 yr How many innings has he pitched compared to the rest of the pen? He's an updgrade to what they had no doubt, but he's not the only reason they've improved. Well, he is/was the biggest addition and has allowed others to go into more natural roles. I agree, the money probably is too much. But, if the Reds were 15 games over, no one would bring it up. He is the least of the worries of the team, IMO.
August 13, 200818 yr Yeah, I meant Rivera ... and I stand by the contention that Cordero isn't an elite closer. "Much better than average" doesn't make him elite. Semantics.

I agree, but if anyone that works for the Reds thought they had a chance to be 15 over .500 I want them fired now.

August 14, 200818 yr Well, it's at least comforting to know that, even with Dunn and Griffey gone, the Reds can still make journeymen lefties look like Steve Carlton.

Cordero isn't a bad pitcher, but he's not an elite closer and I don't know if any closer is worth $12M a year, especially for a small-market team. I didn't need to, I was simply proving why he's getting paid 12 million next season.

August 14, 200818 yr Dusty sat Dickerson in favor of Patterson. Dusty is not a good fit for what the Reds are trying to do. Is Patterson Dusty's or Krivsky's player?
August 14, 200818 yr Dusty has a major man-crush on Patterson, for some strange reason, and requested he be brought in. On the plus side, Patterson is 3-for-7 with an HR and 3 RBIs the last two nights. One more good game and he may get above Mendoza.
August 14, 200818 yr Dusty sat Dickerson in favor of Patterson. Dusty is not a good fit for what the Reds are trying to do. Is Patterson Dusty's or Krivsky's player? Yep, when watching the pre-game and they showed Dickerson sitting, I said a few of the words you can't say on television. I don't want to hear about righty/lefty matchups when you are 20 games out of first. Let Dickerson play everyday, you want to give him a day off here and there, fine, LET HIM PLAY. It doesn't really matter, Dusty won't be in Cincinnati after next year he keeps pulling this crap.
August 14, 200818 yr Do you people really think Cordero is an elite closer? Joe Nathan, Francisco Rodriguez, Jonathan Papelbon & Mariano Rivera are elite closers. Cordero has accumulated a lot of saves over the years, but he's not quite an elite closer. Never has been, probably never will be.

Did he earn his contract people are now complaining about...no doubt about it.
