Just because they are high profile players, they shouldn't be penalized anymore than "Average Joe" from Wherever High School. There's alot of kids who transfer throughout the state with similar circumstances as the Euton's and Jackson's but they are not ruled ineligible just because they are not the high profile players. Don't penalize these two when numerous others are doing the same thing for their own personal reasons.

I have read several posts that say the transfers are " legit cut and dried". According to the bylaws that are written, that the move can not be in whole or PART due to athletic reasons, they are not legit," cut and dried". If the rules are unfair that is another issue. For those that are saying they are penalized for being high profile players, i must disagree. They will inevitably be ruled eligible because the KHSAA does not want to tie up large sums of money in a lawsuit. The athlete who is not high profile and does not have the resources to challenge these rulings will remain ineligible, however. Let us all stand up for only these two cases and insure the class system is status quo in the good old bluegrass.

I don't think anyone needs to throw anyone under the bus. I believe Scott County has a very talented incoming freshman from another system in their program this season. Like it has already been stated that is merely an enrollment and not a transfer.

I’m all for pride in one’s school, community and student athletes, but the fact that “honor” is even in question here is absurd.

 

If the United States was built with only “homegrown” talent, we would either be Native Americans, or living somewhere else in Europe or Asia. The United States as we know it would not exist.

 

I wonder how many Pilgrims riding leaky wooden ships across the Atlantic, or Pioneers enduring bumpy trails and potential death at the hands of hostile natives while riding wagons across the West had their integrity and honor questioned?

 

Is El Duque without honor for not remaining in Cuba and pitching for Castro’s national team?

 

Many people flee poor situations in their homeland to come to a place that gives them greater opportunity to succeed… are they without honor?

 

Are we actually suggesting that the very freedoms and opportunities this country was founded upon should now be restricted on a state or local level just so some kids can keep their starting positions because they’ve been enrolled in certain school systems the longest?

 

It is entirely honorable to support your local school and cheer on the kids in that program, regardless of how they got there.

 

I think it is honorable for parents to actually “work” for a living, instead of expecting handouts from those who do work. As a tax payer, I'm all for parents earning more money and paying a greater share of taxes to lighten the load on all of us. Therefore, I’m all for parents having the freedom to go where the best work and pay for them may be, without worrying about whether their child will be allowed to enjoy their school situation to the fullest.

 

I don’t know any kids 18 or under (that are still in school playing sports) who earn enough money to buy a house and move to the school of their choice. They go where their parents can find work.

 

Is it honorable for supposed “adults” to get on an internet message board and take pot shots at minors and their parents who moved for this reason? I’m not calling out anyone specifically on this, but I have read dozens of insulting posts over several months that IMO severely lack “honor”.

Your point is very well taken. True objectivity (perceived and real) probably can't happen until that structure takes place. While there is no doubt that the current board makes every real effort to remain objective, the current setup will never overcome perception.

 

My whole purpose in posting was not the debate this specific case, but to make sure that folks were clear on what I understood the process to be. Their HO doesn't make rulings. Surely the BOC will concur with HO after debate. Seems they have been complained to by their member schools about excessive legal fees during current Commissioner's tenure, and these two cases seem certain to generate fees if declared ineligible.

 

Hopefully, with future revisions that have been announced in their procedure, the last step in the process will simply be sure to make sure the HO adhered to procedure, and the HOs decision will be accepted as the final one. That is a tough sell to many hard core folks who seem to want very restrictive rules and want to live in an older, more controlling mindset. Just isn't a good climate for restricting now at all, not in judicial nor legislative branches. Despite gnashing of teeth and complaining from some, that is the obvious handwriting on the wall. Just look at last couple of years of court cases, injunctions and legislative action which overrode the votes by the schools. Sooner or later, even if they don't like the answer, they need to listen to those who make the final decisions.

 

Great minds think alike. Excellent explanation. Furthermore, if what you suggest comes to fruition, I think it shows a lot of maturity (for lack of a better word) on the part of the system as a whole for not digging in any longer.

The bottom line is if this was a player or players that averaged 2pts. 1.reb. a game last year we wouldn't be having this conversation the KHSAA wouldn't even look at it and they would be playing at Scott County next year no questions asked and anyone that don't believe that is fooling themselves.

A CASE STUDY:

 

Between 1920 and 1930, the population of Ashland, Ky virtually doubled from 14,729 to 29,074. This was concurrent with the founding of Ashland Oil in 1924, by Paul G. Blazer (a familiar name eh?) and the construction and staffing of ARMCO Steel Mill in the late 1920s. This was the same time that Ashland captured three of its four State titles in basketball: 1928, 1933 and 1934; as well as a National Title in 1928. Their last state basketball title was in 1961. They had their only six undefeated seasons in football in 1929, 1930, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1942; and their only state or runner-up titles in football in 1967, 1972, 1975 and 1990. Their only state titles in baseball came in 1966, 1967, 1968; swimming in 1972, 1973, and 1976; and track in 1955.

 

With the exception of the 1996 state runner-up basketball team under Wayne Breeden, most of Ashland’s glory occurred between 1928 and 1990 when the city’s population was relatively stable at or near its peak. Similar trends can be outlined for Russell, Boyd County, Fairview, Greenup and other northeast 16th Region schools. To a school, these trends can be directly correlated to employment numbers at AK Steel, Ashland Oil, National Mines, the C&O Railroad Shops and other area industries.

 

In 1989 ARMCO merged with Kawasaki steel of Japan to become AK Steel. In 1998, Ashland Oil merged with Marathon Oil to form Marathon Ashland Petroleum and moved their headquarters to Covington, Ky and Findlay, Ohio. C&O Rail Shops eliminated hundreds of jobs. National Mines closed entirely. Over the years layoffs and downsizing have lead to current employment of less than 20% of peak levels at these companies. The population of Ashland is now below 22,000, well below a peak of about 33,000 in the 1960s and 1970s.

 

Prior to Toyota, the population of Georgetown was around 5,000, today it’s just over 20,000. Toyota alone employs over 9,000 workers. The county has tripled in population over the past four decades.

 

You can say what you want, but there is an undeniable correlation between employment, population and state titles that has absolutely zero to do with actual or alleged recruiting. To suggest otherwise is to deny the facts.

 

To suggest that any state agency should have the authority to punish families (by punishing student athletes) for moving to secure better jobs and income goes entirely against history, and is truly un-American.

The fact that you and everyone else seem to agree that Answer 1, or a simple "no comment" would make this move 100% fine and dandy tells me the move and "motives" were legit. Statement 2 does nothing to change the basic facts surrounding the move itself.

 

If the move is legit without making statement 2 above, how is it illegitimate with statement 2? There is no KHSAA rule against speaking to the press or what should and should not be said. ( I think there may be a Constitutional Amendment involved there somewhere.)

 

Perhaps you've never been "quoted" by a media source, but it's not unusual to be misquoted or taken out of context. I doubt that sports reporters would subject their sports readers to a D-1 prospect's dad's views on the benefits of low student-to-teacher ratios and challenging math curriculum.

 

Either the move was legit or not. Dad's "alleged" comments to the press are secondary, and would amount to nothing more than heresay in a court of law.

 

Thankfully, our legal system views defendants as "innocent until proven guilty". It seems the KHSAA associates guilt with appearances, and requires the accused to prove their innocence.

As Toyota is in Georgetown, what other school options were there?

 

He is not working at Toyota in Georgetown. He works in Lexington.

This is what has been reported on the news too. I believe this is what some people had some problems with...why not go to a Lexington school....then dad stated in the papers that Scott Co was visted and chosen for athletic reasons.. The move was liget...I say let them play.

 

There were several conversations with Lexington schools but the whole private debacle that happened with LCA this year scared them away.

All this arguing and for what? If I had a son who was a tremendous saxophone player in the band and wanted to transfer to a school where they had a GREAT band instructor and a great band, no one, not a single person would say a word about it! If he was an artist and loved to paint and wanted to go to school where they had a great art department, no one says a word!

 

They both deserve to be eligible and they should be allowed to play, BOTTOM LINE!!!
