I'm a stinker sometimes.

 

Actually it is great to hear about this game. Widespread coverage of the entire state was limited in those days and it's easy to look up a score but not so easy to see the stories behind the score.

 

What would the 2nd rule change have been?

I don't expect a response that will hijack this thread, but were those intense feelings anything like the ones caused with Danville after a 1986 game in the same round?

Similar to Danville's visit to Corbin in 1990?

I played in this game back in 79'. It was a very hard fought game by both team's and we had a few miscue's that didn't help. I think that the tear-away's that Belfry used were from the 20's era. Kid's that weren't even in the game had there jersey's falling apart. LOL

One exception worth noting.

 

Danville got revenge by absolutely mauling Belfry in their last meeting in the PCB some years back.. I was a little kid in awe of how big and fast Danville was.

 

Highlands last meeting vs. Belfry in the PCB some years back ended witht he Pirates mauling the #1 Birds by about 30 points.

Likewise.... during the 90's it would have been ugly in a few seasons, but Belfry's program has immensely improved over the past 10 years thanks to new facilities, a consolidated middle school program with top of the line coaching, and a top tier strength and conditioning program.

 

Belfry still isn't quiet on the Birds' level, but there have been a couple Belfry teams who could have given them a good run for the money.

 

Now can anyone name the other rule change? This is all a history lesson for me.

If memory serves...I think the rule change might have something to do with reporting to the field. I think that there was a lengthy delay in the start of that game due to each team waiting for the other to take the field first. Just a guess.

Give me the details on this game Tradition. I was playing in college and couldn't get to the game. Was Wilbur Highlands coach or had Jack arrived on the scene? Who were the Highlands players and what went wrong (something had to have gone wrong; as we never get beat by a better team ).

Haywood hates coming out first - even on the road. lol

I remember!!!!! I had 2 brothers on that team that started a terrible 2-4 that year. Talk about turning it around!!! Wasn't one of the rule changes made because to eliminate tear-a-way jerseys. I know when Belfry left that night they weren't wearing much on their backs. I will try to scan a couple of local Cincy articles about the game in my brothers scrap book. Maybe Birdsfan can help me scan some old pictures

 

 

I believe you had 3 brothers in uniform for that game.

If I remember correctly, the HHS game the week before got postponed on Friday night because of a bad lightning storm and had to be played on Saturday. I think it was against Lloyd.

 

And that gave the Belfry coaches the opportunity to come and watch them play in person on Saturday.

 

Is that right? Or do I have another year confused with 1979?

I had a front row spot for the Belfry game to watch the tear away jerseys.

Yeah, Highlands like to get the other team to gather on the field and blow the cannon off for intimidation purposes. Belfry wasn't going out on the field until after Highlands came out.

By the way Boom just to tell you how bad both communities are for football, I wasn't even born at the time and remember stuff from the game lol.
