It was kind of like the movie Hoosiers.

Except that their uniforms held up better.

I know I was only a punk freshman, but I don't remember any of the drama about who came out of the locker room first and it being a big deal.

 

I do remember the tear-away jerseys and that being a big deal.

 

This was not a Highlands team that many fans had a lot of expectations of. The team started 2-4. The team did come together for the run at the title and had a season to be proud of. I haven't seen too many comments on this game from the guys who really played and contributed for Highlands even though several are on this site. Though I don't think any are seniors though several have brothers that were.

 

Maybe all these years later the pain of any season ending loss at Highlands is still to much to deal with.

No, I'm saying that if they had worn the same equipment as every other team in the state, they would not have won that game. Simple as that.

Sounds like to me if Highlands would have learned how to form tackle, it wouldnt have been an issue.

EKU makes a good point though Birdfan. The Highlands offense shouldn't have been affected AT ALL by the tear away jerseys - they managed only 6 points.

 

Now if you think Belfry would have scored less than 6 points but for the tear away jerseys then that makes some sense - but how can you be so sure they wouldn't have at least punch one in the endzone?

In all honesty, I doubt the tear aways had much to physically do with the game. It was more psychological. Belfy's players thought they had the upper hand because of the jersey's, and Highlands got discouraged because they tore a jersey off of a player and he kept running.

Give me the details on this game Tradition. I was playing in college and couldn't get to the game. Was Wilbur Highlands coach or had Jack arrived on the scene? Who were the Highlands players and what went wrong (something had to have gone wrong; as we never get beat by a better team ).

Here it goes to the best of my recollection. Wilbur was the coach and Belfry had these jersey's that were so dryrotted that you couldn't even breath on them without part of it falling off. We knew we didn't have a chance once we saw what kind of uniform's they had.HA... To be honest I really don't remember that much hype about who was going out to the field first. We had a couple of fumbles close to the goal line and if I remember correct Belfry had a couple of pretty hardnose runningback's. This game was a big win for there program. We only had 6 senior's that year and this allowed Wilbur to get plenty of playing time for 81 and 82 state championship kids to play. This would have been considered a rebuilding year anywhere but Highlands.

Ram, I think Belfry's running backs went through several jerseys each. I'm not sure of the exact number, but it was a few.
