June 6, 200818 yr To me, the candidate our country needs is one who is an expert in business, not the military, not political experience as a career. I'm proud to have voted for Perot. To me, the country needs to be run as a business. The business model would place balanced budgets, profitability and general economic stability as a priority. That would mean that we'd have higher taxes, most likely, but also cuts to spending in areas that are being over funded. I think it would also require that our legislators look for reformation of programs to save money, maybe trimming the staff to save money and the cost of benefits. Run the government like a buiness, a business you could lose if you don't turn it around. Some would argue that if you run it as a business then programs that aren't showing a solid return on investment would be gone. I guess what I'm saying is that in my mind, I'm not looking for an expert in anything. I'm looking for someone to lead the country and one that I have confidence in to hire the right people to be experts in their areas of expertise. Who was the last "leader" we've had? Reagan?
June 6, 200818 yr Is military service a requirement or a differentiator when voting for the President? For me, its a differentiator, but it is a substantial. When the Viet Cong told McCain he could be released after 5 years' captivity, and he told them he would not go until everyone captured before him went, that was leadership. When he tried to save his A-6 rather than eject, that was guts. When he pulled disabled comrades from a burning carrier fire, that was valor. When he re-habbed from a badly broken body upon his return home so that he could return to a position as fighter pilot, that was dedication. Military personnel, to me, have stared down death and made decisions under real fire, not just the type of heat that comes from the Washington Press Corps. That's the type of man I want in office. McCain has made me really mad on some policy decisions, but in the end game, when the chips are down, his prior military record shows me he has the mettle to be President.

That's a fine argument for military experience.
June 6, 200818 yr I think the commander and chief of our military should have some solid military experience. Agree or disagree?
June 6, 200818 yr I think the commander and chief of our military should have some solid military experience. Agree or disagree?I disagree because I feel the generals should be the ones making the military decisions, presidents should make the political ones. The military should provide the president with the best possible counsel such that military experience need not play a role in the presidents decisions.
June 6, 200818 yr That's a fine argument for military experience. No, that's a fine argument for true leadership, and I'm not a McCain fan.
June 6, 200818 yr I think the commander and chief of our military should have some solid military experience. Agree or disagree? I don't think one has to be in the military to make a solid commander-in-chief, but I think that one's experience in the military certainly sharpens the qualities that do make a good commander-in-chief. In other words, its not a litmus test, but is a good ingredient.
June 6, 200818 yr I think the commander and chief of our military should have some solid military experience. Agree or disagree? Yes and No. Military experience gives you an insight into life in the military and may give you tactical experience. But it doesn't necessarily give you the strategic mindset that the POTUS needs. Only person I can think of that this would fit would be Colin Powell. He has both theater experience and diplomatic experience.
June 6, 200818 yr In post #112 Rowdy Red Ram you say you feel "powerlessness" when government makes a decision you feel is wrong, well I am very sure most of us feel that way with many government decisions. That is why I am for limited government, the fewer the laws they make, the fewer times we all will feel powerless.
June 6, 200818 yr A couple more of Obama's qualifications.... While I do not want to start a Roe v. Wade debate. IMHO partial birth abortion is an abomination and murder. I in good faith could not support anyone that supports PARTIAL BIRTH ABORTION. Link I hate when the abortion thing comes up, because no matter how they stand on the issue, nothing is ever done one way or the other...

June 7, 200818 yr So you're anti-elderly, nothing to be proud of. Somebody has lost their sense of humor. I guess a little joke in the politics forum is off base these days.

At the risk of, again, threadjacking, I will say that the respect I have for Sen. McCain is tremendous. If he is elected, whether I love for him or not, I believe that he will bring honor to the White House. However, as I stated in another one of these threads (that we have now sort of combined together), I cannot let my upmost respect for the man be THE reason that I vote for him.
June 7, 200818 yr I hate when the abortion thing comes up, because no matter how they stand on the issue, nothing is ever done one way or the other...That's not true. One of the most important things that a President can do is appoint conservative judges.
