This is the type of thing that bothers many about the KHSAA. The uneven application of the rules.

A rule is a rule, is a rule.

The technical was given for unsportsmanlike behavior by bench personel. It was a direct to Setty and indirect to the head coach. It wasn't for leaving the bench for a fight because there was no fight. It was treated the same as if a bench player had said something to an official about a call he didn't like. T 'em up and move on with the game. The officials got it right, and I for one, am glad to see the KHSAA back their officials judgement.

So when they announced the technical was given for leaving the bench they misspoke?

I generally disagree with those that complain about the KHSAA's "uneven application of the rules," as you state it, but in this case I think the concerns are valid.

Agreed. Without knowing all the facts in every decision the KHSAA makes leading to the apparent uneven application of the rules, this one seems pretty straight forward.

 

 

And to those saying it would not have made a difference in the game, I have to disagree. Mason may won by more than they did or Holmes may have won, but to say it didn't affect the outcome seems strong.

Isn't there a difference between a player making a comment about a call and a player getting up out of his/her seat and entering the floor?? He didn't "say something to an official about a call he didn't like." He entered the playing floor as bench personnel. Automatic disqualification.

Look...we can beat this dog to death. Bottom line is those whom believe he should have been ejected and dq'd for the finals will believe that no matter what anyone else says or thinks. I know from personal experience that people in the stands often times see things differently than those officiating the game. The simple fact remains, their split second gut feeling was that his actions did not deem disqualification. Sitting in the stands, one might believe this to be cut and dry...black and white. But when you step back and give it a true unbiased evaluation....one HAS to see some shades of grey. Many thanks to BGP for giving us a place to agree to disagree

The rule doesn't state, "If a fight ensues." The rules says leaving the bench, period...correct?

 

If so, KHSAA blew it.

 

No one will ever know what kind of impact this would or would not have had. Don't give me this cushy crap either. The KHSAA didn't have any problem suspending Michael Mitchell for the championship game...

I wasn't at the game so sure can't speak from personal experience but . . . from what has been stated on this board I'm rather disappointed in the way KHSAA handled the situation. Now we'll see if they step up to the plate on other issues currently in the making or . . . if they'll make exceptions for for them as well.

With 36.8 seconds left in that game, Mason County's Ethan King was going in for a layup when Shelby County's Donovan Johnson was called for an intentional foul. Setty was not in the game but came several feet onto the floor.

 

The referees conferred at the time and gave Setty a technical foul but did not disqualify him from the game. Moore said he was then informed that Kentucky High School Athletic Association officials had ruled Setty would have to sit out.

 

But a half hour later -- 20 minutes before the game -- Setty was cleared to play. He joined his teammates a few minutes late for warmups.

 

"There were a lot of kids upset and a lot of people in administration upset," Moore said. "So we met with (the KHSAA), and I think they made the best decision for the kids and I appreciate them for having the power, which they do, but also having the courage to do what is right for kids."

 

KHSAA sports information director Butch Cope said Setty was not disqualified because officials ruled that there was no indication a fight would break out. National Federation of High Schools rules disqualify a player if he "leaves the confines of the bench during a fight or when a fight may break out."

This wasn't a decision made on a "split second gut feeling" ... the officials conferred for a minute or two before assessing Setty with a technical foul. The KHSAA had several hours to make a decision on the matter.

 

You can talk all you want about "shades of grey" ... but it's clear where your allegiance is on this issue.

If you don't think Setty being suspended would not have made a difference your crazy. I only saw Mason go seven deep and there was a definte let down for them when the two reserves were on the floor. Setty's size and length helped to make it difficult for Holmes to score even though he did not score well he helped make a difference. On a side note why do officials calling games involving UK to be players get cought up in the hype of the players? I sat behind Mason's bench close enough to the floor to see very well. Several times during the second half Miller was stripped clean by Holmes defenders and fouls were called and Holmes defenders were playing him straight up not trying to block his shots and fouls were called on those shots also giving him chances at three point plays. Also on the defensive side of the ball he clearly got away with two or three fouls that were never called. After a first early foul I looked at my buddy and said that's his last foul for a while and low and behold his second occured late in the fourth and I was not sure it was a foul. When it occured there were two older gentlemen sitting in front of me they looked at each other and said, I quote "that should of have been his fourth" they were not rooting for anyone and seemed very unbiased the whole game. Officials get over the hype of UK players to be and The UK coach setting in the front row. Call it straight up for the other nine players on the court with them. Miller is a great player he does not need your help to be great.
