Personally, I would have tried to see if a good stern talking to would have fixed the problem. If he was attempting to "show up" the umpire, he should have been ejected for violating the sportsmanship card which should have been read to the head coach and team capt's. before the game. I only use dugout restrictions for coaches. Either way, the at bat must be completed. So to answer your question, a pinch hitter should have taken his place and inherited his count.

I know one ref in that game has called two straight championship games. Sounds like someone thinks he's ready for that level of competition.

Why does everyone want to look in the rule book for the penalty for leaving the bench for a fight or what "might" become a fight?? Everyone knows the penalty for that infraction is ejection and disqualification from the next contest. Folks, there was NO fight. There was never going to be a fight. So you cannot penalize him under that infraction. You penalize him for what he actually did, which was enter the playing court unauthorized. Same as an illegal substitute. If anyone who was there actually saw a "fight" or punches thrown, by all means let me know so I can apologize. If not, the officials and the KHSAA made the correct decision. What's unfortunate is the KHSAA made a hasty decision before getting all the facts. And even though reversing their decision was the correct thing to do, it left a bad taste in the mouths of many, bringing up questions of favoritism and corruption. My apologies to westsider for the jab. It was uncalled for and I am sorry. But knowing the dedication and professionalism of all of our state tournament officials, I felt compelled to make a stand.

Look...we can beat this dog to death. Bottom line is those whom believe he should have been ejected and dq'd for the finals will believe that no matter what anyone else says or thinks. I know from personal experience that people in the stands often times see things differently than those officiating the game. The simple fact remains, their split second gut feeling was that his actions did not deem disqualification. Sitting in the stands, one might believe this to be cut and dry...black and white. The technical was given for unsportsmanlike behavior by bench personel. It was a direct to Setty and indirect to the head coach. It wasn't for leaving the bench for a fight because there was no fight. It was treated the same as if a bench player had said something to an official about a call he didn't like. T 'em up and move on with the game. The officials got it right, and I for one, am glad to see the KHSAA back their officials judgement.
