I agree! As has been asked before, What if? What if it was another team? Or, WHEN this happens in a game in the future (and you know it will). Either in a regular season or post season game, a player will do the same exact thing, either by mistake, Or, because he sees that rules can be broken and that they don't matter, and they won't suffer the consequences.

 

I am glad Setty was able to play in his final high school game, but that is not the issue here.

Why does everyone want to look in the rule book for the penalty for leaving the bench for a fight or what "might" become a fight?? Everyone knows the penalty for that infraction is ejection and disqualification from the next contest. Folks, there was NO fight. There was never going to be a fight. So you cannot penalize him under that infraction. You penalize him for what he actually did, which was enter the playing court unauthorized. Same as an illegal substitute. If anyone who was there actually saw a "fight" or punches thrown, by all means let me know so I can apologize. If not, the officials and the KHSAA made the correct decision. What's unfortunate is the KHSAA made a hasty decision before getting all the facts. And even though reversing their decision was the correct thing to do, it left a bad taste in the mouths of many, bringing up questions of favoritism and corruption. My apologies to westsider for the jab. It was uncalled for and I am sorry. But knowing the dedication and professionalism of all of our state tournament officials, I felt compelled to make a stand.

At the time of Setty's infraction, a fight certainly seemed like a possibility. The officials thought so, too, judging by their reaction.

 

I suspect they chose not to eject Setty because:

 

A ... there was no fight.

 

B ... this was a state tournament semifinal game.

What facts came to light after the KHSAA made their initial decision? All of the relevant facts were known within two minutes of the incident.

 

Bottom line ... the KHSAA appears to have possibly rendered a decision, then pulled back under some pressure from the affected school.

That means Trevor Setty is a great teammate. Although he entered the playing floor, one could assume that he wasnt going to start a fight, rather to make sure his teammate was ok. From what I have seen from Trevor this year on the basketball court, he isnt looking to cause trouble.

 

Some claim that Holmes is the victim, but I think the victim is Trevor and his family. Being given 6 hours to prepare mentally for the biggest game of your life, and then learning 1 hour before the game that you arent playing, must have been devastating. I wasnt able to talk to the family before the game, but from what I heard throughout the stadium, they were taking the situation hard. It was wrong for the KHSAA to declare a ruling before all the facts were straight.

 

But Im not looking to blame the KHSAA in this situation or anyone for that matter. If the officials felt Trevor was out of hand then they should have ejected him from the semi-final game. Without being ejected, I dont see how you could say he is unable to play in the following game.

 

One could assume what might have happened, but we will never know. Im glad Trevor got to play, and I felt it was the correct decision. Congrats to Trevor on a great high school career, a state championship ring, memories for a lifetime, and good luck wherever you decide to continue to play.

This seems to be a moot point. The officials were the ones who made the mistake in the semifinal game. Generally speaking, when a poor decision is made by a referee in a game it is not reversed (especially after the game has been completed). At this point, it is history. The officials did not disqualify the player during the game. This may have been a mistake by the officials. Nevertheless, a technical was assessed but no disqualification was issued. With no disqualification, there cannot be a suspension for the next contest. (In my six years as a varsity head basketball coach, this was always my understanding.)

 

The KHSAA was wrong to analyze this officiating decision after the conclusion of the semifinal game. They were horribly wrong to wait until 7:00 p.m. to notify Mason County that their player would be suspended (for an infraction that was incorrectly interpreted by officials in a prior game). This was unfair to the players and coaches who were not able to prepare mentally and physically for the next game (as they would have if they knew a starter would not play).

 

If the officials make a mistake as they did in the semifinal by not disqualifying the player, then all parties involved must live with the decision. As the old saying goes "two wrongs don't make a right". The KHSAA intervened where and when they shouldn't have. Subsequently, they realized this and made the correct decision by allowing the player to participate.

 

Good summation. I agree with this. Setty came close to putting himself and his team in a bad situation.

Players checking into the game are supposed to come on the floor when signalled to do so by an official. I don't know what point you're trying to make here, but it's not applicable.

Im saying that a player getting off the bench and walking to the scorers table crossing over the out-of-bounds line. While the player is walking, he could be talking to a coach, not paying much attention to the game at that point, stepping a few feet on the floor, and being in the court of play. While talking to the coach , the ball could be stollen and pushed up the sideline where the player might interfere with the ball or another player therefore causing controversy. It doesnt have anything to do with fighting, Im just asking if he should be given a technical for being on the court? He had no intention of causing problems, but he did.

All though I'm glad he was able to play, it does turn my stomach that the KHSAA continues to change their rules on the fly. The way the Holmes players kept their cool in the Paintsville, and Lex. Cath games, was a reflection of their Coach, and the young men on that Team. I can almost assure you, if it had been a Holmes player, they would of sat.

It sounds pretty like it is pretty black and white to me. If he came onto the court when there was potential for a fight, he should be ejected. If there was no potential for a fight, they wouldn't have called a flagrant intentional foul. It would have been unfortunate for the championship game and the young man to have to sit out the game, but rules are rules for everyone all the time. He should have been ejected from the game and not allowed to play in the championship. Would that have been an unfortunate situation? Yes. But like others said, Rico Johnson could have easily started somethin' when the Paintsville kid slammed him to the ground. Henderson could have rebelled when Slone pulled his jersey off hit (twice) but they didn't. Rules are rules.

 

It sounds to me like the officials made the decision that he was assesed a technical but didn't want him to be thrown out for that because they knew what would happen if they did. But one goes hand in hand with the other. And everyone knew this, so it sounds like the KHSAA went and talked to the officials and together they decided that they didn't T him for coming onto the floor but for saying something to the official, which sounds a lot less better for letting him play. Sounds like the KHSAA persuaded the officials and told them what they called. Hmmm....

If you don't think Setty being suspended would not have made a difference your crazy. I only saw Mason go seven deep and there was a definte let down for them when the two reserves were on the floor. Setty's size and length helped to make it difficult for Holmes to score even though he did not score well he helped make a difference. On a side note why do officials calling games involving UK to be players get cought up in the hype of the players? I sat behind Mason's bench close enough to the floor to see very well. Several times during the second half Miller was stripped clean by Holmes defenders and fouls were called and Holmes defenders were playing him straight up not trying to block his shots and fouls were called on those shots also giving him chances at three point plays. Also on the defensive side of the ball he clearly got away with two or three fouls that were never called. After a first early foul I looked at my buddy and said that's his last foul for a while and low and behold his second occured late in the fourth and I was not sure it was a foul. When it occured there were two older gentlemen sitting in front of me they looked at each other and said, I quote "that should of have been his fourth" they were not rooting for anyone and seemed very unbiased the whole game. Officials get over the hype of UK players to be and The UK coach setting in the front row. Call it straight up for the other nine players on the court with them. Miller is a great player he does not need your help to be great.

 

He got the Michael Jordan treatment.
