State Tournament Officials!

Featured Replies

Not a very big Tony Gray fan, but that's just my opinion.

Is that the same Tony Gray that is the assistant police chief in Danville?

The best official in the 8th region did neither tournament. Go ahead. Ask the 8th region fans - Terry Coldiron, hands down.

Fortunately, the fans don't rate the officials. The officials are rated by the coaches and assigners. In our region, the officials are given a rating based on 80% coaches rating and 20% assigners. The coaches determine the rating and I'd say that the highest rated officials from the 8th are calling either.

You would say? Or you know? Those are two very different things.

And...I would say that you are wrong. Terry Coldiron has been the highest rated official...by the 8th region coaches...for several years.

Honestly, I don't mean to be argumentative. I personally like both of the officials that were chosen to officiate, one for the boys and one for the girls, but I think that not sending the top rated one to one of the tourneys is a bad call.

Coldiron was the highest rated official in the 8th Region this year and he did neither tournament. Since he had been previously, Boucher wanted to spread the wealth to some other officials. The State Tournament needs the best officials from all regions not some runner-up.

Which one is Sandlin?

He was the shorter dark haired official who worked the Lex. Cath./Owensboro game. He is very antimated when he makes a call and did alot of "bird dogging" (ball watching out of his area) trying to call the whole floor.

Refs are human...therefore, they make mistakes. Nevertheless, I felt two games out of 15 were very poorly called, that being the Hazard/Shelby Co. game and the Paintsville/Holmes game. There were many missed calls, and during the Hazard game the majority of the fans in the arena booed a call made in the final minute that could have completely turned the game around in Hazard's favor. How do we change this? I don't know. I have written to KHSAA in the past to voice complaints but have never even received confirmation that they received the letter. I have also heard they are begging people in the state to become qualified to referee, but are not receiving much interest from the general public. I do know one thing...when it's over, it's over, so there isn't anything we can do to change the outcome!

I don't know the 8th region assigner personally but I do know how the process is throughout the state in every region. You have your opinion, I'm not trying to change your mind about this. I know that it's a proven process for the OVERALL future and to insure great officials in the future. What would happen in 10 years after these officials retired? It would be a mess! To have 16 brand new officials at the State tourney would be disasterous. In a perfect world you would love to have the same officials year after year but it's a horrible plan for the tournament in 10 yrs. I don't see why some people can't see this.

Just because Coldiron didn't go that doesn't mean that the official who went in his place isn't capable and isn't one of the best from that region. I know what you are saying, I completely understand it but Boucher's process is the best way to do it. There are so many different things that he has to think about for the overall good of the state officials and to ensure that he has good officials in the future.

Yes. Excellent man and an excellent official.

Who had the Championship game?

Glenn Napier, from the 14th, was one of the refs. He was the tall, slim built ref.

This may be the worst officiated state tourney I have ever seen.

I totally agree with you. :thumb: The officiating in this state is absolutely pittiful.

If Larry Boucher of the KHSAA can't get better officials than what was at the tournament, then he needs to consider bringing in college officials.

Thanks for your opinion. :thumb: I doubt all 16 top rated officials will retire the same year, so your picture of 16 brand new ones one year is a little bit far-fetched. Additionally, they may not always remain the top rated official. Too bad that you get rewarded with the state tournament without being #1.

Who had the Championship game?

Glenn Napier, Tony Gray, and Craig Henson

One word for all three: TERRIBLE!
