State Tournament Officials!

Featured Replies

Thanks for your opinion. :thumb: I doubt all 16 top rated officials will retire the same year, so your picture of 16 brand new ones one year is a little bit far-fetched. Additionally, they may not always remain the top rated official. Too bad that you get rewarded with the state tournament without being #1.

:rolleyes:I've tried to have a discussion with you on this issue and it's become obvious to me that you just want to argue and be sarcastic. I told you that I understood your point and I too want the very best rated every year BUT I understand the reasoning behind this process. I understand that they do take the best in the state, not always the top rated but they are still the best and very capable of doing the job. As an official myself, I see and know certain things that the "fans" do not see or know. I know how politics SOMETIMES plays a role in ratings and sometimes the ratings do not indicate the best official or even the worst official for that matter. I also know that there are officials who work very hard and are very capable of calling the Sweet 16 who deserve a chance to do so in their career. I have tried to inform you of some of the issues that Mr. Boucher and other official take into account but you have not been receptive. These are things that i KNOW about from years of experience in officiating but you don't care so I'm done with you and this discussion. :thumb:

They might not be the best, but they are much better than the KHSAA officials.

The KHSAA is always looking for new officials!! Come on out!

I guess that it is your condescending attitude that I don't care for. How my posts are opinion and yours are fact and how you are trying to teach/inform me. I am not trying to be argumentative, but, yes, I did use sarcasm to make my points.

I have great relationships with MANY officials and I know that MANY/MOST work really hard. They get some pay, probably not enough, and very little respect or appreciation for a job that they do mostly because they love the game. I am a HUGE supporter of officials. Check my posts.

However, I stick by the premise that we need to send the BEST to the tournaments each year. If not (here comes the sarcasm again, sorry) then my team should have made it this year, even though we didn't win the region (or even a district game for that matter) because we have worked really hard, too.

Yes, the one delayed foul call on Holmes last night was pretty bad. But I think sometimes the refs wait to see if the shot goes in before they call a foul. Not saying I agree, but seems to be what happens. Either that, or they have defective whistles!

Anyway, I didn't see anything too biased one way or another in the championship games. Lots of physical play on both sides. I saw Holmes guys get hit on shots and also Mason.

I don't think the refs made any difference in the game.

Being that I saw the play you are referring to, the play was not in that officials "primary" are of the floor. The play was in the center officials "primary" the the Lead official having "secondary" coverage. The whistle was late due to him giving the center a chance to see the play (or get straight lined as we used to say, which it looked like he did) and then Lead came with the call. Right call.

Better late and right than early and wrong.

First games I got a chance to see in the tournament since moving here and retiring from the game. Really thought that the refs did a great job. Good no calls when some contact had nothing to do with the outcome of a play. Much better than we used to get in Tennessee!

I wouldn't want to be associated with the KHSAA officials!

Then don't complain about them.:flame:

KHSAA makes it to difficult for new officials to join the boys/girls club. 2 or 3 years doing JV's would propably force anyone to give it up. I know of some quality guys that could do varsity games today but would have to spend a year or two kissing up to some AD by doing JV and Freshman games for 2 years for nothing in order to then get in the club only to find out the Assigning Sec. doesn't like him and he or she gets 6 or 8 games a year. The process needs to change. By the way, I thought Napier and Gray done a fine job at the tourney. Their associates spoiled the barrel.

I thought Smith from Louisville was very good, along with Gray, Bottoms, Lyle, and Sandlin. Of course Lyle and Sandlin were blocked all day on Saturday, and the other three were very good in their games. Friday and Saturday is when it gets real tough and you want guys working these games that are used to this style of play. Not always possible when 6, 7, 10, and 11 are always playing on Friday and Saturday.

If it is the call I am thinking about it was his call , because he was the one under the basket and watched the ball to see if it went in. If it is a foul then it should have ben whistled when it happen not waiting to see if the ball goes in?:ylsuper:

Smith is from Georgetown and works in the BBA (10th and 11th region) along with Cary Lyle. Both of these guys would have been blocked on Sat., but why would have Sandlin been blocked out?

Sorry to inform you but because the play was coming from the other side of the basket it wasn't his "area".

No, Alfred Smith is from the Louisville regions. I believe Sandlin lives in the 9th but works in the 8th, therefore, he was blocked out of both games.

What process would you advise? im not being argumentative, I'm honestly wondering. Athletic directors have nothing to do with an official calling a varsity game. If that is the case in your region than the problem is with the assigner and not the KHSAA. I know many people believe that they could jump out on the court from the stands and call a game on the varsity level but it just doesn't happen. A person may think he/she can but that is just unrealistic. The job is so much more difficult than some fans think. Calling a foul or a travel is just one aspect of the job. Your judgement is just one aspect of the job. It takes a least 2 years be able to call at that level. It used to take longer but now-a-days with the training that officials have availible it doesn't take as long but it still takes time. I'm not sure about your region but most regions have an assigner who does the right thing by his officials. The other method used by some states like Ohio is much different and an official is likely to be at the lower levels longer than with states who use assigners. In Ohio the officials get the games themselves which IMO is not good at all. They sign contracts with schools as independent contractors and I think it tends to be perceived as "home cooking". The KHSAA uses the same method as the NCAA and it works great if you have the right people doing the job.

Condescending attitude? :rolleyes:I have been nothing but respectful to your opinion. It is just that, an opinion. I was trying to inform you of something that I know a great deal about. Are you too big-headed to be informed of something? I'm glad you have a great relationship with MANY officials, I wish more fans did but it doesn't make you an evaluator or know what's best for officials. I told you many times that I understood your point and I do but I was just trying to INFORM you of why the process was the best overall process. My apologies, I thought we were all adults here and I thought someone could handle being informed of something from someone who has a great deal of experience in the subject. I guess not!! (sarcasm)

*sigh* If you can't even see you own behavior, then I have nothing further to say. I have heard your arguments and stated why I don't agree with your ideas - which are the same as mine - opinions. The problem is, you don't see it that way. Mine are opinions and yours is the correct way.
