State Tournament Officials!

Featured Replies

By this same reasoning, maybe we should only allow the JV coaches on the state tournament team to coach the games. That way, when the varsity coaches retire, these guys will have had some experience!

Isn't that ridiculous? Don't you want your best calling the most important games?

I think that's a little bit different. Of course you want the best and these guys are the best in the state but you also want to make sure that you have the best in the future. In officiating, younger guys are put with older veterans to mentor them. You wouldn't want 3 officials who are each having their 1st experience in the tourney, would you? The assigners put 2 vets with a new guy, that's the best overall way to insure the best officials in the future. Like I stated, if you didn't do this then in about 10 years you would have 16 officials who were each having their first experience at the Sweet 16. I don't think anyone would want that. Sure, in a perfect world you would love to have a 25 yrs vet at each position in each game and never miss a call but it's just not realistic. There is a reason why assigners throughout the nation use this type of system because it's proven. No process is perfect but this is the best overall process for the future of officiating.

That is what the other games are for...let them call districts and regionals. This is the STATE tournament. I want the best players to play, not ones who need the experience for next year. I want the best coaches to coach, not the ones who might be assistants, but head coach down the road. And I want the BEST officials, the ones with the best track record for making the difficult calls correctly. Anything else is just politics.

Make the officials work harder during the regular season to improve their calls. Don't let "second best" be rewarded. That's like saying "Let's let the regional runner's up teams go to the state tourney instead."

He is not working the Sweet 16 and did not see anyone there yesterday from the 16th region.

Marla Gearhart was supposed to call the tourney but she got an even better opportunity and couldn't make it. She was selected to call the NAIA national championship game.

This may be the worst officiated state tourney I have ever seen. There have been 2 or 3 games that were bad for both sides. What's happening?

I personally dont have a dog in the fight.. But some very very bad calls, There was one tall -bald headed referee that thought he was Mr Referee, just cant believe some of these are suppose to be the best, oh well, maybe they will get better, sure couldnt gotten any worse. why not let the fans coose the referees, they are the ones that have to pay money to watch these jokers

That's just it...you would think that you would send the best...but I guess not. Oh well, it's just the state tournament, right?

The games faster all the time. Many of the refs don't get a chance to see this style of play all year.

I think an official from 6-11th regions will have better game experience than officials in the 13-16th regions, simply because they don't see this style of play.

They take officials from each region each year. The games are never distributed evenly. The 13-16th regions end up getting 2 games max and rarely getting a final game.

So, should the current system be revisited?

Well no doubt calls are missed and calls are made for stars and that sort of thing but one fact remains...the refs at the state tournament are not the best has to offer. Each region gets represented and there are several from the BBA that are better than half of the refs at the tournament that didnt make it. A lot of making it to the sweet sixteen, as in other things, is who you know and whose back you can scratch the best.:thumb:

It's not the same thing as letting the regional runner-up go or any other scenerio you've listed. I completely understand your point, I do but it's just not realistic if you want to have good officials in the future. How do you think these guys that are the best became the best? From this exact process. You're right, this is the STATE tournament and unfortunately working district and regionals games are not the same. These guys are the best in the state. Boucher would not choose the official if he didn't think that he/she was capable of calling at the state tourney level. He also has a girl's tourney to think about and they deserve the best also. It's a delicate process when choosing what official goes where. When he says that he doesn't like using the same official over and over again part of it is because that official may be doing the girl's tournament instead. He has many different variables that he has to think of when choosing these officials but I'm sure he's going to pick the best officials in the state to call both tournaments.

I thought the Holmes/Paintsville game was the worst officiated game of the day. Some very questionable block/charges, elbows not being called and then some ticky tack calls to make up for the blown calls.

Sandlin was his typical show-boater during the Lex. Cath/Owensboro game. He made sure everyone saw some of his calls by his antics.

:thumb:Absolutely one of the worse refs I have even watched call a game. How this guy gets anything above the middle school level is beyond me.

Dear God don't let him be one of the refs for tonights Championship game. Everyone will be there to see the game and these 2 outstanding teams Mr Sandlin, not you..

Tommy hutton from the 14th has done the championship at least 5 times in the last ten or 12 years

So correct, why can't these people that put these in that position see that.

Not a very big Tony Gray fan, but that's just my opinion.

What were the names of the refs tonight, and a breif description of which one they were?

The best official in the 8th region did neither tournament. Go ahead. Ask the 8th region fans - Terry Coldiron, hands down.
