A couple seconds blow would have helped that's for sure. As far as D, is M-M the best way to defend Holmes? If Willie has anything up his sleeve, he definetly doesn't show it in this game. The one thing I'd be worried about in a zone against Holmes is blockout assignments. They were hard enough to keep off the glass playing M-M.

I also thought the Birds didnt pull any punches and came out playing tough man-man the whole game. A fun game to watch, many times I kept saying no dont run with these guys but it made for exciting basketball. The skill level of those kids is so good. Catching passes thrown from 40 feet across the floor against a tough press and converting layups. I told my son walking out I said did you notice how the speed of the game gets about 10 times faster than middle school ball? We both were very impressed.

 

Humphrey looks like he has grown a little also. Holmes might be the longest team I have seen in a long time. Who started the game for Holmes and who are their first 3 off the bench. I got there at the end of the 1st period when McGraw knocked down the trey at the buzzer.

 

You are so right on. There's been many great games in the 9th Region over the years, but this has to rate close to the top as one of the most intense! Every player on that court turned the volume up to 11 when it only goes up to 10. They take that intensity to Rupp and they're bound to scare somebody. It wasn't a complete shooting clinic, but I was proud of both of those teams last night for playing probably one of the toughest games of their lives and never giving up. Their hustle was unbelievable and I don't recall the last time I've seen such strong giant passing and pushing the ball so lightening fast up the court. Truly a night to remember for the 9th Region fans. :thumb:

A great game to watch from a fan perspective. Very well played game from start to finish. No jawing between teams, just good clean basketball. That is what impressed me the most. I think that Greg McGraw and Arrez Henderson made it very clear last night that they are the two best players in the 9th region at this time.

 

The bench play will improve when Stein and Simpson get healthy. This team will be able to go about 9 or 10 deep depending on the opponent. I continue to be very impressed with the play of George Grote. He has made huge strides this year.

ABSOLUTELY correct! Just need to work on m-m help, rotate, box out principles. It's just impossible to replicate Holmes' quickness and athleticism (jumping) in practice. This game will definitely help the Birds get better!

"Anytime you can come from behind and win here, that says a lot about the character of your kids....It speaks more to just their athletic or basketball ability; it speaks to their character. And we've got good kids who aren't going to quit, who are going to keep fighting."

Exactly, I thought Grote and McGraw as well as Hurtt played excellent man-man defense and forced turnovers. I only noticed maybe 3 or 4 unforced TO's. I would be curious to know the REbounding stats. Highlands at times had position and just got out jumped which is frustrating especially in a fast paced game when legs are tired.

 

If these two teams face off again in the Regional tourney I expect the same atmosphere but I also expect Willie to pull something out of his bag of tricks and maybe do some trickery. Wouldnt hurt to maybe run a Triangle and 2 defending Henderson and Rico man to man.

I just tried to look up the stats for both teams but they're not posted yet from last night. But yea Highlands players had to be getting a little frustrated on the rebounding end. I saw J. Johnson grab a rebound and his hands were at the top of the box. You can't simulate that kind of athleticism in practice.

 

While a zone might be a good idea next time these two meet, I'm not too sure it will be as effective as we think. Holmes shot the rock well from outside last night when they chose to shoot the 3 ball. (Outside of Braeon Avery who clearly had a horrible game last night). Also playing a zone will make it much tougher to rebound against a team athletic as Holmes. Schlarman had a good game plan last night and I'm sure he'll come up with something similar next game, adding a few wrinkles here and there.

I thought Breaon played well enough, you cant discount the 9 assists as they were absolutely nasty blueplate specials. He did a nice job of pushing the ball up the floor and penetrating. He had a few turnovers but you expect that out of your point guard. I gurantee his assist to TO ratio was solid.

 

He is lightning quick as well and a strong kid.

Don't get me wrong, Braeon played well assisting his teammates. I meant offensively he had an off night shooting the rock, missing wide open lay ups, free throws, and taking unnecessary shots at times. But as you eluded to, that was offset by the way he penetrated and pushed the ball. He definetly had some nice assists. Probably the best 2 were the ones where he drove, and dished it to a cutting Henderson for the 2 dunks that he had in traffic.
