Anyone that THINKS they might want to ref would pause after watching tonight's game. Those types of games are tough to ref.

 

Whew!!! I'm exhausted just by watching the game. Can you say 'Intense'??? Toughest game all season so far. :thumb:

Highlands blew their chances in regulation with missed free throws... That was their game and once it got into OT they had no chance. While maybe HHS was tired, Holmes seemed to not only be fresh, but it looked as if they kicked it into another gear. That combined with at least 2 missed layups and a foolish foul puts you down 7 in a hurry. I was very impressed with McGraw. I didn't think Arrez did a great job on him at all, as he constantly got the sideline on him and Arrez ran along side of him and never really cut him off. Once either team got into the lane the opponent was pretty much just hoping for a missed lay up. Penetration caused cutters and slashers from all over the place to show up. I don't know where that OT intensity had been the entire game but Holmes definately picked up the intensity too in the OT period. I was very impressed with Rico Johnson's offensive abilty and actually Arrez showed more on the offensive end than I expected, not just the dunks but when he sensed his team needed a bucket he went and got one. The one exception to that would be when he was on a 3 on 1 break and he spotted up in the corner to try to tie it instead of going to the basket. Cut to the basket and throw one down and the mo takes a big swing in your favor.

 

On a side note I have no idea who #10 for Holmes is but I am going to look it up. That dunk he had in OT was NASTY... He jumped from pretty far out and was still way up there... Easily the best dunk of the night, though they are were fairly effective...

That would be senior Todd Humphrey. Didn't play much last year but look who was in front of him. He can get up there though...He also had a lot of key rebounds in the last quarter and OT...But I agree it was probably the best dunk of the night.

Wow I would've thought he would get more minutes last season. They didn't use many people at all last season and I think he could've given Rice and Nelson more breaks last season unless he has just improved that much this season. His putback at the end of the third was huge as far as momentum goes.

 

Speaking of him, Nelson was a non factor tonight. I knew he didn't score much but I didn't notice him too much on defense or the boards either... Was it just because he was consistantly in foul trouble?

And one more quick question I have for the Holmes supporters... I noticed a "Rice" and an "Arnold" on the Holmes roster... Are these any relation to Greg and Kejuan?

Last year Holmes only played about 7 players (Henderson, Rice, Jefferson, Hill, Nelson, Avery, Arnold, Clark-sparingly). Humphrey sat behind all of them. Not sure why he didn't get more minutes. I know he had improved a lot over the years though.

 

Nelson was in foul trouble tonight which is why we didn't hear too much about him. He had a few rebounds and blocks, but he just has neer been much of a scorer.

The Arnold is no relation but the Rice most likely is. They have a very large family here in Covington.

Hey, I only mentioned the people I actually saw. I wasn't allowed to sit in the core Highlands section so I didn't get to see you and your man.

 

I was in Frankfort with the Chamber types kissing babies, well kissing something, trying to get N. Ky some money out of State govt.

Best and most fun High school basketball game I've seen in a while. I want to congratulate both coaches on giving their players the confidence and the green light to just go out and play basketball. Most programs today slow the ball down to run a play every time down. Both teams ran when they could and it made it a very good game to watch. Thank You.

I also thought the Birds didnt pull any punches and came out playing tough man-man the whole game. A fun game to watch, many times I kept saying no dont run with these guys but it made for exciting basketball. The skill level of those kids is so good. Catching passes thrown from 40 feet across the floor against a tough press and converting layups. I told my son walking out I said did you notice how the speed of the game gets about 10 times faster than middle school ball? We both were very impressed.

 

Humphrey looks like he has grown a little also. Holmes might be the longest team I have seen in a long time. Who started the game for Holmes and who are their first 3 off the bench. I got there at the end of the 1st period when McGraw knocked down the trey at the buzzer.

Short and sweet MC I'm surprised. You were blowing a lot of hot air at the game buddy. It was a great game to watch and the dunk a thon in OT was interesting.

I saw a suggestion to put in subs for the last 30 sec in each quarter. Sound idea except a team like Holmes can hang a quick 8-10 on you in that period of time. I had heard Grote didn't reappear because he was banged up. It all came down to FTs, and Highlands didn't convert. Anyway the game is meaningless except for the fact that the Birds know they can beat Holmes, and Holmes shouldn't be to sure they can beat HHS, as Nic will play in the next round.

You're absolutely right...as witnessed in the OT! Maybe if you spelled certain players briefly, here and there, the legs are there to drop critical FT or not make the crucial TO. That game could have used Guidugli or Turner for 20-30seconds at the end of quarters to spell K-nek, Grote, Hurtt...or even to give Greg a quick break. Also thought Zak Lother came in and gave a good effort when McGraw went out with the nose problem. He played under control and made some very nice passes. PS...great effort from JV team in a losing effort. Down ~14 and cut it to 3...against some guys who got major varsity minutes for Holmes!
