Where does Lincoln turn...

Featured Replies

Agreed. If anything, the Garrard program has gotten worse under his direction. There is a complete lack of discipline within the program and wins are few and far between. Finally, his coaching style has not improved one bit during his tenure; the same coaching mistakes he made as a "young" coach he's making as an "experienced" coach.

Lincoln County is a traditionally strong football program that is really on an uptick right now. Hiring away the head coach from eight miles up the road will only set them back to the pre-French days.

I dont mean to bad-mouth coaches, but each year i expect to see an article in the advocate messenger stating his release. I cant imagine that he would be considered especially with the quality of names being thrown around. If Lincoln could get David Buchanon, he would continue the progress made by French without a doubt.

It looked to me like Garrard beat every team in their district this year except Somerset. They did have one bad loss to Pendleton Co. where they had 5 or 6 starters out. They lost to Frankfort, Somerset, and Lincoln who were all in regional finals. They played majority sophomores many of who started as Freshmen in the previous year. Pretty tough for anyone to win with mainly Freshman and Sophomores playing. I know Garrard had some good seasons with the same coaches in some previous years where they could be more competitive. I don't think Garrard has ever been a championship caliber program and there will be some down periods.

As for Perry: Washington County would have won plenty of games this year if they didn't have so many injuries. They were a senior dominated, but lost 4 or 5 key starters for the season early. Perry took over a program that was down and built them up but just ran into some bad luck. He shouldn't be judged by that. All in all I think Perry would be the better fit for Lincoln. Clevenger and Settles would do well, also.

Again why is Perry so high he has a over all losing record could someone tell me what he did before he got to Washington Co.

Can we count Regional or District Championships?:D

A lot of things have to come together to win a state championship. Except during big runs of talent, back-to-back championship seasons are rare. I think it is more important to consider the following about a prospective head coach candidate (not necessarily in order of importance):

1. Can he beat the teams he should beat?

2. Can he, on occasion, beat teams that he shouldn't?

3. Can he build and maintain a program?

4. Is he a positive influence on his student-athletes?

5. Will he cooperate with the coaches of other sports at the school?

6. Will he work with the youth league?

7. Can he interact with the community to build community support?

8. Would you want your son to play for him, even during a losing season if such were the case (easy to be a winner)?

It is nice to win a state championship but most seasons will not be championship seasons. To me, it is more important to have a man who will teach your young men pride, respect, dignity, sportsmanship and life's lessons whether winning or losing but regularly winning more than losing.

I think David Buchanan and Mike Settles names have been mentioned more than any others and I think both would be good fits at Lincoln County. Both have good situations at their current positions and may not even be interested.

I am confident that Lincoln County will do everything possible to find the best available coach for the football team.

I don't know Coach Settles, but I do know Coach Buchanan has all of the qualities listed above. I think LC would do well to seek after a well established HC and according to sources, French listed Buchanan as the top pick to replace him. That would be good for Lincoln and bad for Mason if that were indeed to happen.

Mark was a back up QB at UK behind Couch then Bonner. He then became a GA at UK under Morris and went to Baylor for a couple of seasons. Came back to KY and took over a W.C. program that was down. The talent at W.C. is not the greatest, he has done a great job there with what he has. He is a great coach and even better man. L.C. would be lucky to get a coach like Perry. Not sure if he is even looking at the L.C. job but if he is, he should be at the top of the list.

Heard from a pretty reliable source that Stonebraker said he is not interested. Coach French had things going well, here's hoping that someone of equal or higher coaching ability gets the job.

LC would not be interested in Stonebraker. He has not proved hisself at GC, why would LC take the risk.

I've narrowed my wishlist to two:

Settles and Buchanan

Not trying to be negative, but this isn't the NFL or College football. You sometimes have to choose from what you got or can get in high school ball.

Thanks K&K G. sounds like a coach ready to bust on the scene with the right situation.

I think Settles from Bullitt East would be the best choice, because of his record, ties to the county (wife), and the use of a power running game (veer) which should fit Lincoln well, but it would seem hard to pull him away from Bullitt East. Then again things are not as rosey at BE because of the 6-4 and 6-5 records of the last couple of years. Maybe the program is in decline and needs to start up new again, but then again who knows. But one think is for sure those records at BE are not what the people of Mt. Washington want to see, especially because of the lose to North Bullitt in the playoffs.:D

Why would Mike Settles leave Pikeville, go to Ballard and then go to Lincoln CO. That would make no sense.

Mike Settles is at Bullitt East. Mike Jackson is the one that left Pikeville and is the new coach at Ballard.

Settles is at Bullitt East, Mike Jackson is who you are talking about. :argue:

We will see, I feel like the choices will be better than you suggesting. Time will tell.

Is the football program taking a back seat to basketball? The basketball program seems to have it going on right now.

Football does too, but I am just wondering if this had any effect on the decision to leave.

Basketball was or has watned the upper hand since Upchurch was head coach there. I know they are successful now and will be, but I think both sports are feeding off each other and will be successful.
