East Carter vs. West Carter, Raceland vs. Russell, Ashland vs. Boyd Co. have to be the best in our area.

Who is your school's biggest rival?

 

Owsley County and Lee County have had a good rivalry for many years. They're in the same district and region, neighboring counties whose schools are only 11 miles apart. In most years it is the largest gate for each school during the regular season games.

 

And to make it even more interesting, the two didn't play in the regular season (only in the district tournament if they drew one another, which didn't happen very often for some reason) from 1953 until 1977 due to an altercation over a seat at the district tournament in Beattyville between the Owsley County principal and a local Beattyville businessman.

 

The two resumed scheduling one another in 1977, and the rivalry continued. It's a good rivalry, and I can't remember one single incident of a fight or other problems since they resumed scheduling each other ( except the occasional ribbing between fans).

 

But there have been some fun stories regarding pranks and other incidents over the years that I might talk about in another post.

At Raceland I would say that the rivalry with Fairview is #1, that one can and usually does get very heated.

After that the Russell and Greenup County games are pretty big. JMO.

I don't think they did, at least not in boys basketball. I know they weren't scheduling one another when I started teaching there in the fall of 1976. I kept the scorebook for Coach Bowman. The first scheduled games were in the 1977-78 school year, Coach Bowman's last year as coach, and the year after Mr. Gabbard retired as principal. Charlie Turner took over the program the next year.

For Somerset it would be Pulaski County with Southwestern a close second. In actuality they are probably about even but PC gets the nod since they have been around longer and there's more history between the two schools.

I was amazed when I went to a Boyd/Ashland game a couple years ago in the middle of the season. Boyd was struggling and I figured it would be just another ho hum game. Both teams played like they were in Morehead with a trip to Rupp on the line.

 

Course anyone from the area has known that for years, but just amazing to see and that's what a true rivalry is all about.

 

I think that once Darius leaves and Mason Co comes back to earth a little bit in the next year and the other 10th region teams continue to rebuild and get stronger, we will see some great 10th region matchups as well.

 

I almost forgot, Elliott's biggest rival is the NBA because apparently no high school team can match their ultimate power.

The thing about the Lee-Owsley rivalry is that when you go to the game at either gym, it is full of people you are related to, done business with or just been friends with all your life. The Professor loves the Owls, and the Lee County games at the old gym in Beattyville that I have missed in the last 20-30 years you can count on one hand. The thought of falling out him and other good people from Booneville over the outcome of a basketball game is just unthinkable! I've known them too long for that. Sometimes the kids forget that just a little, but us old timers know better.

Nothing beats "Farmer Day" at Greenup when we play Russell!!

Deming and Bracken have always been hard fought games and there isn't much love between the two.

Morgan County is probably Elliott County's biggest rival over the past 20 years.
