Who is your school's biggest rival?

Owsley County and Lee County have had a good rivalry for many years. They're in the same district and region, neighboring counties whose schools are only 11 miles apart. In most years it is the largest gate for each school during the regular season games.

And to make it even more interesting, the two didn't play in the regular season (only in the district tournament if they drew one another, which didn't happen very often for some reason) from 1953 until 1977 due to an altercation over a seat at the district tournament in Beattyville between the Owsley County principal and a local Beattyville businessman.

The two resumed scheduling one another in 1977, and the rivalry continued. It's a good rivalry, and I can't remember one single incident of a fight or other problems since they resumed scheduling each other ( except the occasional ribbing between fans).

But there have been some fun stories regarding pranks and other incidents over the years that I might talk about in another post.

Augusta - Bracken Co. as far as historically

But over the last couple years the Augusta-St Pat games may have closed the gap, our surpassed as the top rivary due to the Distric match-ups. Augusta-Deming is also another good one

Rockcastle-Jackson County used to be a HUGE basketball rivalry. People that went to OTHER schools would come in flocks to see Sarah Elliot, Johnna Abney, Tara Rowe and others play.

For a short period, Rockcastle vs. Cawood was fierce. Aaron Cash vs. Blake Hobbs was always great to watch. Rockcastle is no longer in the 13th region so the rivalries may change.

If I had to pick a rivalry today I would say Somerset is our new rival. They have gotten the best of Rockcastle this year but in 2005/2006 season they were regional favorites and Rockcastle beat them in the opening round of district. Rockcastle always seems to get them at least once every season.

I have to agree with you Prof. it is a good rivalry. I have never been treated poorly at Owsley. I think both programs are small schools and tend to feel a kinship for each other when they play other teams. Now Powell seems to be Lee most heated rival with silly incidents the past three years. Hopefully that is all in the past. I believe Owsley can thank alot of thier class behavior on the fine example you have set over the years. Thanks Prof.

Gallatin County vs. Carroll County

Gallatin County vs. Walton Verona

These 3 schools are in close proximity to each other, so a natural rivalry stems from that fact alone. Throw in the fact that they just seem to not like each other at all and you generally have some very good games, in spite of talent level at any of the three schools. Most times, there are a numerous fouls called and some very, very hard fought and physical games played when Gallatin comes to call on them. Might as well play football instead... either way I like Gallatin County in either sport.:D

For holy cross i would say Holmes just because thier so close together.. some of the kids grow up playing eachother in the parks. But CCH is not far behind. Very intense district battles happen every year.

Thanks for the kind words bball king.:thumb:

Owsley and Lee's people are so close geographically and about the same size that most people from each county know each other, many married to someone from the other county. My twin sister is one, married a Lee Countian and lives there. Her daughter graduated there. I have many friends there from years of playing golf as a member of the Beattyville Country Club.

I agree also with Lee and Powell being the most intense rivalry right now, just like Owsley and Powell were back in the '90s when they were going at it for district dominance in most years. But the Owsley-Lee rivalry is always constant, and is still there regardless of eithers talent level.

While it's usually not much of a game, Jackson City and Breathitt games always fill the gym and there is a lot of hype.

For Somerset it would be Pulaski County with Southwestern a close second. In actuality they are probably about even but PC gets the nod since they have been around longer and there's more history between the two schools.
