I have talked to people that have said that the Bellevue/Dayton small school river rivalry ranks right up with the HHS/CCH games as the best rivalry in NKY. If you have never been to a game I would recommend it. Though they may be toned down a bit as administration from the schools stepped in after some rather, um... interesting... chants from each student section in a game earlier this year.

 

The thing about this rivalry, and in my mind what separates any old rivalry from the great ones.... This is personal. This may sound bad, but in many ways it goes far beyond the playing surface. This is for bragging rights, for the next sport, for when you see them on the street, and if you're a senior, when you see them 10 or 20 years from now. You know them, they know you. You've seen each others games probably 100 times in your life because you have played against each other since the 3rd grade. You know more than just their game. You know some about their life outside of sports. You know who the people are yelling in the stands. You know the names of those last names that always seem to come up every few years at a school as in "thats a (school name here) name." You know that taunting of either side is like walking a minefield, but most of the people that do that understand that quite well... It's more than a game, it's more than just not liking each other, it really is a big deal in your life picture. I have seen infants dressed in outfits supporting teams. I have seen 5 year olds with faces and chest painted. I have seen um, lets say... altercations... If it means enough for you, it really is a part of life...

:thumb: That can do a lot for a rivalry. I'll be honest, for the CCH-HHS rivalry, the games against each other in grade school are limited. When I was growing up, only two CCH feeders (Pius and BSac) played Highlands Middle School (or Campbell, and whoever else goes to HHS) regularly, and that was but twice a year. A lot of my younger rivals wound up as teammates, but I could imagine the animosity from playing them my entire life.

Phelps in the 15th the rival is Belfry High school just over the mounain.

Lawrence Co. would be Tolsia, W.V.

Football, Basketball and Baseball

South Laurel is Corbin's biggest rival in basketball.

Especially since they are both in the same region now. Aren't their schools only about 10 miles apart? I remember a few years ago that both were in the state tournament, South from the 12th and Corbin from the 13th. Pretty nice for the basketball fans in that area.

Madison Central - Tates Creek has become a rivalry after the half court brawl last year at MC.

Do they still do that? :laugh: I remember the GC fans/students dressing like that from years back for their game with Russell.

I thought way back then (Years&Years ago) that it was one of the funniest things that I have seen from student/fan section. :thumb::lol: That was good way for them to take a comon stereotype that some had used to make fun of them and had placed on them and the GC kids turned it around on them and used it in very good way. Ones that knew what was going on could tell and it got the message across. Just the GC kids having some good, clean fun.:thumb:

When I was there it was a huge deal. Some teachers even gave extra credit for dressing up. Of course, for some of us, EVERY day was Farmer's day.

This one in many ways that you have described sounds like the Raceland/Fairview rivalry - any sport, matters not. These two go at it.

I would have to say Russell would be Raceland's biggest rival. Would be Fairview but I think the flames have dies a little bit since they left the district.

For Fleming i would have to say Mason and Rowan Co. in everey sport.

For Warren Central, it's Bowling Green easily.

 

I know a few years ago Warren Central and Ryle had a couple heated games. Wish they could have kept playing. Of course Ryle regressed talent wise and Warren Central went on to win a championship.

 

As for Ryle, I would say Boone County is their biggest rivarly in basketball.

I was amazed when I went to a Boyd/Ashland game a couple years ago in the middle of the season. Boyd was struggling and I figured it would be just another ho hum game. Both teams played like they were in Morehead with a trip to Rupp on the line.

 

Course anyone from the area has known that for years, but just amazing to see and that's what a true rivalry is all about.

 

I think that once Darius leaves and Mason Co comes back to earth a little bit in the next year and the other 10th region teams continue to rebuild and get stronger, we will see some great 10th region matchups as well.

 

I almost forgot, Elliott's biggest rival is the NBA because apparently no high school team can match their ultimate power.
