Cov Cath vs Highlands is the most intense rivalry in the state

 

 

As evidenced by the reports of the confrontations in the parking lot following their last game.

I don't know how it is these days, but when I played for Magoffin County I greatly despised Painstville.

At Raceland I would say that the rivalry with Fairview is #1, that one can and usually does get very heated.

After that the Russell and Greenup County games are pretty big. JMO.

 

I agree, it's GC and Russell. Russell has always called us a hillbilly, country school. So every time we verse Russell we get all decked up in our bibs, boots, girls in pig tails with freckles, and the most important thing our Green, Black, and Gold. Then you've got Russell dressed like preps. I would say the GC/Russell games are the biggest with the most fans from both sides.

Nothing beats "Farmer Day" at Greenup when we play Russell!!

For Walton Verona it is Grant Co. It's always a competitive game and a war. For some reason, these close neighbors just don't get along. Additionally, it's a big District game.

Do they still do that? :laugh: I remember the GC fans/students dressing like that from years back for their game with Russell.

I thought way back then (Years&Years ago) that it was one of the funniest things that I have seen from student/fan section. :thumb::lol: That was good way for them to take a comon stereotype that some had used to make fun of them and had placed on them and the GC kids turned it around on them and used it in very good way. Ones that knew what was going on could tell and it got the message across. Just the GC kids having some good, clean fun.:thumb:

I had no idea that the GCHS student section still did this for that game, think that it is great.:thumb:

I have heard about that one :thumb:and I will say that on a much smaller (small class A schools) the the Raceland/Fairview rivalry is as intense as any. Not as many students and/or people but every bit as intense. Also,in our area the Ashland/Boyd County game in any sport played anywhere is a must see if you have never been to one of those.

I know what you are saying and I realize that GC/Rusell is a big rivalry.

I have to say however that I was speaking of Raceland's rivals. I had said that Fairview was Raceland's #1 rival and meant that our main ones after Fairview would be Russell and GCHS.

Not the Russell/GC rivalry itself.

Doesn't matter anyway, all are correct. The Russell/GCHS game in any sport is a big one as well as the others I mentioned. Good Luck to the Muskies.....:thumb:(unless of course you are playing Raceland )

I have talked to people that have said that the Bellevue/Dayton small school river rivalry ranks right up with the HHS/CCH games as the best rivalry in NKY. If you have never been to a game I would recommend it. Though they may be toned down a bit as administration from the schools stepped in after some rather, um... interesting... chants from each student section in a game earlier this year.

 

The thing about this rivalry, and in my mind what separates any old rivalry from the great ones.... This is personal. This may sound bad, but in many ways it goes far beyond the playing surface. This is for bragging rights, for the next sport, for when you see them on the street, and if you're a senior, when you see them 10 or 20 years from now. You know them, they know you. You've seen each others games probably 100 times in your life because you have played against each other since the 3rd grade. You know more than just their game. You know some about their life outside of sports. You know who the people are yelling in the stands. You know the names of those last names that always seem to come up every few years at a school as in "thats a (school name here) name." You know that taunting of either side is like walking a minefield, but most of the people that do that understand that quite well... It's more than a game, it's more than just not liking each other, it really is a big deal in your life picture. I have seen infants dressed in outfits supporting teams. I have seen 5 year olds with faces and chest painted. I have seen um, lets say... altercations... If it means enough for you, it really is a part of life...

Gallatin County vs. Walton Verona

 

These 3 schools are in close proximity to each other, so a natural rivalry stems from that fact alone. Throw in the fact that they just seem to not like each other at all and you generally have some very good games, in spite of talent level at any of the three schools. Most times, there are a numerous fouls called and some very, very hard fought and physical games played when Gallatin comes to call on them. Might as well play football instead... either way I like Gallatin County in either sport.

 

I didn't know we do not like each other.:confused: Actually for Carroll it is probably Owen Co. and Gallatin Co.

For years Hazard's biggest game was against PCC, but in recent years JBS has turned into quite a rivalry in basketball.

The Hazard-JBS thing will pass fairly quickly, though. The Hazard-Perry Central rivalry, which replaced the Hazard-MC Napier rivalry after consolidation, will always be there.

It is true that in the last few years Powell County and Lee County have had their share of on the court (add off) incidents. But, Powell County and Estill County have the biggest rivalry. Border rivals for years, now in the same district. Similar size schools that just seem to take great pride in beating each other in any sport at any time.

Powell and Estill have the same situations as Owsley-Lee. Neighbors whose schools are about 15-20 minutes apart and (now) in the same district. And the rivalry is natural because of this geography, and many of both's populations know each other personally. People in these counties will often talk about games with one another from years ago just like it was yesterday.

 

It's interesting to sit around a restaurant or other hangouts and hear some of the elders tell some of the stories. It's comical in some cases because you know that some of the stories have been embellished in their magitude in some of the storyteller's memories. One guy in the restaurant was telling how many points in scored in a game against Lee back in the early '60s, and I discovered later that he didn't even play basketball in high school.:lol:
