South Laurel is Corbin's biggest rival in basketball.

 

That's a pretty entertaining one I've been fortunate to experience. The North Laurel-South Laurel rivalry is pretty intense as well.

I have talked to people that have said that the Bellevue/Dayton small school river rivalry ranks right up with the HHS/CCH games as the best rivalry in NKY. If you have never been to a game I would recommend it. Though they may be toned down a bit as administration from the schools stepped in after some rather, um... interesting... chants from each student section in a game earlier this year.

 

The thing about this rivalry, and in my mind what separates any old rivalry from the great ones.... This is personal. This may sound bad, but in many ways it goes far beyond the playing surface. This is for bragging rights, for the next sport, for when you see them on the street, and if you're a senior, when you see them 10 or 20 years from now. You know them, they know you. You've seen each others games probably 100 times in your life because you have played against each other since the 3rd grade. You know more than just their game. You know some about their life outside of sports. You know who the people are yelling in the stands. You know the names of those last names that always seem to come up every few years at a school as in "thats a (school name here) name." You know that taunting of either side is like walking a minefield, but most of the people that do that understand that quite well... It's more than a game, it's more than just not liking each other, it really is a big deal in your life picture. I have seen infants dressed in outfits supporting teams. I have seen 5 year olds with faces and chest painted. I have seen um, lets say... altercations... If it means enough for you, it really is a part of life...

 

I agree. :thumb: I had the opportunity to participate in many of these rivalry games in football/basketball/baseball and they are fun. It all starts in the summer conditioning for football and transcends into each seasonal sport. Not to mention I used to ball with many of those guys in the playgrounds in both cities. For the most part it is both a hated rivalry but also a friendly one. I still run into former players and some give me blank stares and others are very cordial and come up and say hi. Some people grow up and others never grow up but I can say when looking back on the High School glory days I always remember the brutal football games, the smell of popcorn in the gymnasium during those winter months and playing under the lights down at the Bellevue Vets in the Spring against the Greenie Weenies.

 

If they ever decide to merge these two schools, look out. Beechwood's dominance would definitely be challenged in football and they definitely would compete against many of the Class A Catholic schools in basketball. On the diamond they would also compete in their district and be a contender to make the 9th Region tournament year in year out.

While each wanted to beat the other, we enjoyed watching the other beat either Campbell and Brossart. When Bracken upset Brossart in the district, I remember hearing many Bracken and Pendleton people comment that they were very surprised on the number and how vocal the Pendleton fans were in cheering for Bracken.

How can we forget about the BELLEVUE/DAYTON:jump:Rivalry on a smaller school scale. They don't come much better than that when it comes to the "we don't like you" attitudes

These games are always good. Teams play hard when they go against each other. Seems that no matter how good a team is, when these schools get together you never know who is going to come out on top.

I do have to give the edge to Gallatin over the last couple years. They have a couple of good players and Coach Jones does a nice job with them.

Schue your showing your hatred of UK again everyone knows that UK is everybody elses biggest rival. Just kidding it is not a rivalry when one school dominates another for a few years, because what one team calls a rivalry is the other teams easy win.

Deming-Augusta, Augusta-Bracken, Bracken-Deming always good rivals I look for Deming-St.Pat rivary starting here.

I'm not sure what answer you would get if you asked 10 Mason County fans which basketball team they'd like to beat the most. The answer was easy before Maysville High School consolidated with Mason County. These days you might get 6 or 8 different answers. It's one of those unusual situations where a couple of high-profile out-of-region teams (Lexington Catholic and Scott County) could be considered bigger rivals than in-region schools (I'll say Clark County and Montgomery County).

 

Fleming County used to be real high on the list, but can't really be called a rival any more. Football still yes; basketball no.

For McCreary Central, it's obviously Wayne County. However, in the past couple of years, Southwestern has been right up there as well.

 

For a long time, Wayne owned McCreary and most of the games over the past ten years were close games in the district tournament. Wayne would beat McCreary by two or three points in the tournament and send the Raiders packing. However, whenever Wayne would be a big-time favorite, they would run the score up on the Raiders.

 

Two years ago, McCreary was 2-0 against the Cardinals.

Last year, McCreary was 0-3 against the Cardinals (with Wayne winning big).

This year, McCreary is 2-0 with BIG wins against the Cardinals.
