Lexington Christian fined over financial aid to athletes

Featured Replies

A copy of the report to be fair, should be posted for all to read at some point, there were some incorrect information that was put in the Herald Leader article, however, what doesn't change is some athletes in the PAST received assistance. There were seven not sixteen athletes, and the 18 students spanned kindergarten through high school over 4 years. Most noteably, NO student received this outside assistance during the current school year. Still sins of the past to be paid for, but the article miss reported some things. But then which of us have not seen that happen before in other circumstances, I am sure it was unintentional, but when its the paper, then of course it all is "correct" without question. Only read the report, before using "everyone" knows for a fact that "__________".

Yes you can, within in limits, you can seek help from private individuals, you can see housing assistance, call TY at Extreme Home Improvements, apply for special loans, or make sacrifices to be able to afford to get the home. The point of getting the assistance is not the point here, it's what was the TRUE motive for the assistance.

Good point. And if the local church wanted to help out pigman and it was part of that church's mission, they could help pigman get better housing. Bottom line here is that a lot of people think they know LCA's intent, when that's impossible. I'm probably naive, but I trust everyone until someone gives me a reason to think otherwise. I have to believe the pastor involved when he says the intent was to increase diversity at LCA. Don't get me wrong; what happened at LCA was wrong, they violated KHSAA rules and they probably deserved even tougher punishment in my opinion, but that's a far leap from some of the very nasty comments made on here against them (and by association the church involved). People may think that LCA had other motives, but thank goodness judges and juries don't base their decisions on what they think may have happened or hunches; rather they have to rely on facts and evidence. We should do the same thing.

Well, where can we read the report? Why would they report 16 of 18 when there was only 7?

They cheated they got caught, I would venture to say they only got caught for a small amount of illegal things that were going on as is usually the case this is what the KHSAA could prove. Without some form of recruiting these private schools could not exist. Does not matter what the motive is, illegal is illegal, I am sure that the KHSAA was very cautious in what they punished them for, as they have a very low amount of accusation that are ever acted upon.

You would have to ask the reporter, you should know that often times people are quoted (I had it happen to me at U.K. once) and the reporter for what ever reason, takes quote out of context. Honestly I don't know, but it was my understanding that the paper is probably going to be contacted to clarify a few points. I know the school has copies of the report, but that doesn't help people not in the general area. If I hear of it getting posted, I will post a link.

What incorrect information? If you know that for sure, post the correct information here. Why should we wait for a copy of the report to be posted?

Who would believe me , just as I said others shouldn't make statements as absolutes same as I shouldn't. Bottom line if people care to know they can read, honestly, most have their minds made up, and feel the penalty wasn't severe enough. You know they might be right, I dunno, my point is, one should read the report, not just a reporters interpretation. I guess sort of like the baseball steroid scandel, but I tried reading that massive novel.....:scared:

A lot of us on this site prefer to deal with the truth instead of just aiming arrows at those we don't like or understand. I'm serious ... if you know what was incorrect in the article, I would like to know. And I suspect some others here do, too.
Once again someone wants you to believe that the "charitable acts" of others led to this outcome. Why is it that this so -called "charity" is almost entirely for athletes???? This "charity" is at the expense of other kids whose parents paid their full tuition and is all in the name of winning at any cost.

Has that been determined? I know 16 of 18 involving this church were athletes, but there may be other charities helping a majority of non athletes. You need to see the scholarships (which I believe is more like financial aid) of every student at LCA to make that statement.

As I have posted earlier, the punishment LCA received (AS QUOTED IN THE PAPER) was as follows: (1.) Fined $13,892.00 (2.) Put on probation for 1 year (3.) all parents of 16 student athletes required to pay back the tuition they were given. (That's right folks, I didn't studder, I said "16" !!)

What about the 2 non athletes? Do they have to pay back tuition as well?

If the private schools had the same set of rules as the public schools, I don't think there would be the finger pointing. As far as punishment, it should be the same for privates and publics. They should be swift and harsh. That would end all speculation of cheating.

This assumes the public school rules are the correct one. Why not make the public schools use the same set of rules as the Catholics? Personally, I don't see any differences, if any at all.

There were 16/18 athletes listed in the article, so I would have to assume they could figure out what sports these kids participated in. It wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

Which I think proves my point that if there hasn't been any comments made by the KHSAA or anyone else involved in this situation about taking away the state title then it should most likely be assumed the Girl's Basketball program wasn't involved. Which then begs the question, why does it keep being brought up?

I don't think most of you understand what has been going on at LCA.

This is not about a school trying to help the needy or bring ethnic deversity to their school, this is about "money" ! greed ! ego !

To be found guilty of the charges brought on them, LCA had to go outside of their geographical boundries and recruit student athletes. I'm sure they had plenty of needy kids inside of their boundries, but those kids could not bring the athletic talent to LCA's program.

16 student athletes in a 1A program is HUGE ! The coaches and management of this program didn't just try to sneak in a couple of studs to tip the scales in their favor, they had a total commitment to take over and dominate Class 1A sports in the State of Kentucky. WHY ? money ! prestiege ! ego !

Nomatter how good a school is otherwise, if they don't have a top drawer athletic program, they will not grow and prosper. (Sad, but true)

When a school has an excellent scHolastic program coupled with a championship athletic department, people will flock to them in droves. (money, money, money !) I have no doubt that their 20 year plan was to dominate 1A, then 2A, then 3A etc., etc.up to 6A and finally compete with the Trinity's of the world.

There can be no other explination with such a large commitment and risk of 16 athletes.

Question 1: What geographical boundry? I didn't see in the article where it stated any specifics on where these kids were coming from. LCA is open enrollment with kids from any part of Lexington as well as some of the outlying counties, provided the student can get transportation to school, coming to the school. So im a bit confused since there are no imposed boundries on LCA meaning I don't know what boundries necessarily are being broken or crossed.

Question 2: You make a huge assumption in this post about the athletes that came to this school. I have not seen a list of the student athletes involved and unless you are directly involved in this investigation I doubt you have seen a list of the student athletes involved either since the KHSAA doesn't typically reveal that information. So when you claim that LCA is bringing in all these amazing studs that they recruit to their program I'd say this is more assumption then fact. For all I know a majority of these kids never saw a down of football this season with the varsity football team, or they were simply filler on the bench for soccer, tennis, track, chess, etc..

To support this example, if you claimed that all nine student athletes involved in Lex Cath's violations were studs to the program you'd be wrong. The only football player I know of involved in the investigation was a freshman on the 2002 team who only saw cleanup duty in blow out wins with the other freshmen. He left the school after his freshman year. That doesn't sound like a Blue Chip recruit to me. And there were several more athletes involved that were also nothing more then bench players.

You really think that is going to happen??? There are just so many good people out there, trying to make a difference in the lives of LCA students.......if they were athletes!!!!

So, make all kids pay to go to school? If they are not athletic dont give them a scholarship, or AID. If they can't afford it let them be home schooled?:thumb: That should work
