Lexington Christian fined over financial aid to athletes

Featured Replies

As far a I know, our local public schools don't offer monitary assistance to the students in need and our athletic teams are represented by those who came through our feeder schools, not students from several different counties.

Just some observations from some country folk there Fastbreak.

You can go through thread after thread about this on here. Your local public schools have no price of tuition, so no one pays. Everyone must pay at a private school, and anyone can recive need based tuition. Your county can choose to accept students from out of county(they would have to pay a tuition, or thier district would release money that would go to your district) and there are public school throughout the state that do this.

1. How much do those students pay for tuition and books?

If the answer is nothing then who pays for those kids to go to school?

It would seem to me that EVERY kid that goes to a public school is given financial assistance paid for through tax dollars.

I have held back from commenting one way or the other on this issue. With reading all the post/allegations and reasons for fines/punishment I have to say that I am dissapointed in LCA. True, I don't know or claim to know the entire story so I am not slamming them.

I have made some very good friends with some of the LCA people/fans through BGP and in no way do I want to cause hard feelings or "point fingers". Our teams have had a very good relationship and what is becoming to be more and more of a very big rivalry.

My only other coment on the matter and is the only thing that I have said/believed all along is that I think that private schools should play in classifications/ playoffs & Championships of their own. Public schools should have their own as well. This would not create a public/private debate as for them to compete against one another for district/regional and State Championships. Should a public or private school want to schedule one another during the course of the regular season then I don't have any problems with that.

I also purposely stay away from the Public/Private debates just bc of all the strong feelings both ways on the issue. I am a High School Football fan, I love watching the kids play and will leave all the public/private debates and legal issues to the people that take care of those things.

So as far as I a concerned............"Lets Just Play The Dang Game". :D:thumb:

Well said oldrambler, and with that, this Raceland fan is going to try to stay out of it from hence forth. I have said all I think I can, and made my points.

Those of you posing a solution of seperate playoffs would class A have KCD and LCA? Are they the only football playing teams in the state. As far as fastbreak saying if a parent wants to send their child to a private school and can't afford it they should be allowed to gain assistance. Well there's this really nice house I want and my kids would be better of there , but I can't afford it do you think I could find someone to help me out.

If the "monitary assistance" is for nothing more than tuition, books, athletic participation fees and equipment, the private school student derives no added "monetary" benefit than what ALL public school students receive just for showing up. The only way anyone can assert that the benefit is greater for the student at a private school over a public school, is to also admit that the private school education and environment is superior to the public schools. I find it ironinc that the people who seem to be the most adamantly against private schools are the very same people making this admission.

If it could ever be proven that a student received money over and above the expenses needed for the same things public school kids get free, I would agree with you 100%. Slam the lid on the private school that would do such a thing. I don't think this is the case at LCA.

I understand the pride and sentiment everyone has in kids in their system. Pride in one's community is a disappearing commodity in today's world. I would never insult that. The fact however, is that many public schools have open enrollments as big as some of the private schools everyone seems to be so upset with. I know that within the 16th Region 64th District a student that lives in the Fairview district can attend and play sports at Ashland or Boyd County or Rose Hill. A student in the Ashland district can do the same at Boyd County, Fairview or Rose Hill. As far as I know, there are reciprocal agreements in place that allow students anywhere in the 16th Region to attend any other school in the region... if they're willing to make the commute. I also know public schools in the region who had student athletes from Ohio or West Virginia in the past. I don't know how it is in other Regions, but I'm not sure the difference is all that lopsided.

I'd like to hear you try to convince some of the folks I do business with that I'm a sophisticated city slicker...

Yes you can, within in limits, you can seek help from private individuals, you can see housing assistance, call TY at Extreme Home Improvements, apply for special loans, or make sacrifices to be able to afford to get the home. The point of getting the assistance is not the point here, it's what was the TRUE motive for the assistance.

Points made very well. I don't believe I have ever been quoted so nicely. But, in the end, you will defend and I will accuss. Thanks though. Good Luck.

I tried to pull up the article, but it said the page had expired. Can anyone else pull it up. Can anyone help me?

I just want someone out of the goodness of their heart to hand me the money. Isn't that what happened here. They're called private schools for a reason, so the agurement that a parent can't afford a private school and that public school kids go for free, so the parent wanting to send a child to a private is entitled to help doesn't hold water.

The problem here isn't reciveing assistance for tuition, it's how the decisions are made about the subject. ANY studnet who qualifies financially can recive tuition assistance. There are rules that apply to how it is given out, and it appears that LCA broke those rules. There are no rules(KHSAA or otherwise) that outlaw tuition assistance.

Thank you, thats what I was attempting to say with a bit of humor, but you said better.

The rules are the same.

How do you think they are different?

Tuition assistance can be offered to out of district students for private schools.

It cannot be offered to public schools that accept out of district kids.

So, let's say you kid lives in Newport and you are choosing between CovCath and Highlands. Highlands you are going to have to pay thousands for tuition with no financial aid. CovCath you can get financial aid and have part of the tuition offset through these means. I don't know the tuition of each but let's say both is $5,000 and CovCath is offset by $3,000. Which may you send your child too?

Different set of ways they can do things.

You cannot blame anything on CovCath here, but simply a different way they can operate.

No offense LBBC... that may be the way it works in your neck of the woods, but in our region "reciprocal" agreements are in place that permit kids to attend public schools in other school districts without paying added tuition. I would assume this is a decision that is made by each school district and as a result varies from district to district. Public schools have a pool of students to which they are entitled, private schools do not.

That's why it makes no sense IMO for anyone to try to pin this on private schools only.

I don't think most of you understand what has been going on at LCA.

This is not about a school trying to help the needy or bring ethnic deversity to their school, this is about "money" ! greed ! ego !

To be found guilty of the charges brought on them, LCA had to go outside of their geographical boundries and recruit student athletes. I'm sure they had plenty of needy kids inside of their boundries, but those kids could not bring the athletic talent to LCA's program.

16 student athletes in a 1A program is HUGE ! The coaches and management of this program didn't just try to sneak in a couple of studs to tip the scales in their favor, they had a total commitment to take over and dominate Class 1A sports in the State of Kentucky. WHY ? money ! prestiege ! ego !

Nomatter how good a school is otherwise, if they don't have a top drawer athletic program, they will not grow and prosper. (Sad, but true)

When a school has an excellent scolastic program coupled with a championship athletic department, people will flock to them in droves. (money, money, money !) I have no doubt that their 20 year plan was to dominate 1A, then 2A, then 3A etc., etc.up to 6A and finally compete with the Trinity's of the world.

There can be no other explination with such a large commitment and risk of 16 athletes.

Reciprocal agreements are rare up these ways, at least to my knowledge.

Well now, the private school supporters would say that public schools have no students that they are entitled to.

And I would submit that private schools are entitled to recruit students from a larger area than public schools draw from.
