Lexington Christian fined over financial aid to athletes

Featured Replies

Will what if I wanted to sent my kid there, Are they going to pay my way too. If not, that would be discrimination wouldn't it. Plus I don't know how the rest of the parents of the kids that go there and pay the big bucks could just sit back and take it. It would just tick me off.

Actually they very well may. You ought to try it. It depends on your finances, race, and many other factors. Some scholarships can be directed toward veterans children (like one of mine) or african americans (like those at LCA I'm guessing) or many other reasons, including grade point avg stipulations. I've seen funds donated in memory of an athlete who died at an early age, and they may want it to go to someone who played the same sport as their son or daughter. My current will leaves virtually everything to my daughters school, specifically for the field hockey program. Maybe a turf field if I amount to enough. :ylsuper: Catholic schools rely heavily on donations, the majority of which have nothing to do with sports.

Having said all that, if LCA broke the rules, they should be punished.

Does it really matter? You have made your mind up that LCA's supposed connection to the KHSAA brought about the penalty that many think is light. Frankly its probably not anymore your business then it is mine.

I think it is not just my business but everyone that pays tax in the state of KY. Because we fund KHSAA and its every one right to know whats going on. And if your school plays a team that cheats to win you would want it to be a fair playing field too. I think every one should stand up and make them explain them selves.

My team is in the same district as LCA in multiple sports. I still don't see what knowing how many LCA parents work for the KHSAA is going to solve.

It will not solve anything. But it will shed some light on why the slap on the hand.

lexvol you seem to be taking this awfully personal to slam LCA before anyone has the facts if I didn't know better I would think you are the disgruntled parent someone else talked about earlier. Why dont we all just calm down and wait until we can read the report before we jump to conclusions and split the privates and the publics.

Sorry, not a disgruntled parent of any child at LCA but a parent nevertheless that has watched this kind of crap go on for way too long. Nothing personally invested, just sick of the cheating to win at any cost. LCA, Lex Cath and others should be so very proud!!! Parents at these schools that object should stand up and be heard or you're no better than the the cheaters.

The KHSAA is a flat out joke! There is no justice and they (the KHSAA) do whatever they want to do! They punish what schools they want and they punish what kids they want!

The KHSAA's punishment of LCA is stupid! Why fine them at all? If anyone thinks for one minute that the admin. and coaching staffs at LCA are losing one wink a sleep over the issue than they have lost it! If the truth be known, they are laughing theirselves to sleep knowing that they have recieved what is essentially a get out of jail free card.

I will say this though! I do not believe that any KID should be punished for things they have no control over. Most of these kids have four yrs. to play sports and that is it! Those four yrs. may be the highlight of their lives! However, I do believe that harsh punishment should be imposed on those schools who break the rules! LCA clearly violated bylaw 10 and they admitted it! The harsh reality is that LCA, the school system and athletic program, was handed over a gift from the KHSAA.

Some say SHAME on LCA! Not me, I say shame on the KHSAA for allowing such activites to go on.

THE KHSAA IS A JOKE!!!!! SHAME ON THEM!!!!!

people hear things through the grapevine and have no idea what is actually going on. I am not defending LCA, but most of the things being said on this topic are completely untrue or at the very least unproven. the herald-leader amongst other media have made what actually happened much worse than it actually is. people should get their facts straight before they talk about this subject.

This is my opinion on the aid to the children who need it: it is great that people want their child to have a Catholic edu but if you can't afford it you don't get it. Therefore, attend the public school. There have been several thousand people educated thru the public school system that have gone on to become very successful people throughout the world. Education, no matter where you go, is what you make of it. No one will ever convince me that the private school teachers are better than the public school teacher and visa versa. It starts at home and that's the bottom line because "Stone Cold said so!"

I went to St X, not LCA. I received a scholarship, and BTW, I was 5'4" and 110 lbs. Hardly an athlete. My scholie was roughly 10% of my tuition. Then I worked at school in the summers as well, 40 hours per week. Then I applied for a grant which was very small. I then applied for another grant provided by an alumni fund. I signed a form saying I would repay this amount after I graduated. I donate every year to this fund, not much, but something. The remainer of the tuition, which was about $1200 over four years (back in 1980-83) I paid for myself because my family was poor, dad was a disabled drunk, blah blah blah.

Point being, I resent your repeated bashing of any catholics who receive money to attend school, like we are all superstar athletes. I easily could have accepted govt welfare and gone to a free school, but I chose not too.

Kudos to you for your diligence, but the "government welfare" comments don't do much to help your argument.
I see what you are talking about and understand your situation. LCA on the other hand had 16 of 18 athletes getting help.

7 of 18 athletes over a 4 year time frame

7 of 18 athletes over a 4 year time frame

The reporter added the number from each of 4 years 2 plus 5 plus 5 plus 4 to get 16, but this represented only 7 athletes over all the sports. Therefore, 11non-athletes received assitance to attend school. Also, no athlete in the 2007-2008 (current year) received any assistance. Not saying this shouldn't have a punishment, just pointing out that you have to be careful just accepting what you read in the newspaper. Obviously it depends on who someone compiles the words or "add the numbers". What do you get what you add 1+1, well 11 of course. Actually if you skim the report quickly the mistake could be made, but inquiry should have cleared that up. We as individuals all will have a feeling on what is enough punishment, we have the debate every time we hear of something on the news, and even though we may not feel the punishment fits others may feel its too much (in general not in this case). On certain issues I am thankful I don't pick the punishment as I would be too harsh, and in other casesr too easy. Anyway not making excuses just pointing out an inconsitency, and to make a plea not to let ones anger take this out on the kids. I dread the wrath to come to some kids that I know just wanna play basketball, but hey I too could be wrong, and the fans and student body will have compassion, maybe.....

Well tell what is true? We read the newspaper, what do you read and where do you get the "REAL" story? All you are doing is spreading grapevine information.

Some of us would like to "SKIM" the report. Also, it would only make sence if the 16 was really 7 and only 2 non athletes were involved in four years then in at least 2 of those years it was only athletes that received aide.

I agree that the penalties should have been more harsh than they were, but since they were put on probation for 1 year, doesn't that mean "no" post season play next year ??
