Lexington Christian fined over financial aid to athletes

Featured Replies

You really think that is going to happen??? There are just so many good people out there, trying to make a difference in the lives of LCA students.......if they were athletes!!!!

lexvol you seem to be taking this awfully personal to slam LCA before anyone has the facts if I didn't know better I would think you are the disgruntled parent someone else talked about earlier. Why dont we all just calm down and wait until we can read the report before we jump to conclusions and split the privates and the publics.

I think what LCA did is totally wrong and the way the KHSAA handled it is ridiculous! A slap on the wrist is all that is. They knowingly cheated and hardly got punished at all. I believe that they should have to forfeit all their games this season and should not be allowed in post season play next year. I also feel all players given financle assistance should be rule ineligible.

A copy of the report to be fair, should be posted for all to read at some point, there were some incorrect information that was put in the Herald Leader article, however, what doesn't change is some athletes in the PAST received assistance. There were seven not sixteen athletes, and the 18 students spanned kindergarten through high school over 4 years. Most noteably, NO student received this outside assistance during the current school year. Still sins of the past to be paid for, but the article miss reported some things. But then which of us have not seen that happen before in other circumstances, I am sure it was unintentional, but when its the paper, then of course it all is "correct" without question. Only read the report, before using "everyone" knows for a fact that "__________".

KHSAA is subject to the open records law.

Thank you for posting that, I was obtaining a copy of the physical report tonight. Now I don't have to post it.

OOOOPs this is not the report, I will have to get it post it somehow.

Sorry, it seems the report must be somewhat secret as there is nothing but a one paragraph statement on the KHSAA.org website in the recent news release.

The open records route would be useful to see the backup and source material to the report.

What is interesting is the statement that families must 'pay back' monies given to them or to the school on their behalf. Whay KHSAA bylaw directs that as a remedy or punishment? This should be a concern to all families who participate in KHSAA sanctioned sports, especially those who receive tuition assistence. If KHSAA can 'fine' individual families and take direct action against individuals who are not employees of the member institution then it has enormous constitutional power.

I believe they have to pay it back to be eligible at LCA.

I believe they have to pay it back to be eligible at LCA.

Question is, can these kids and their families afford to pay the money back? If so, can they also afford to stay?

Will what if I wanted to sent my kid there, Are they going to pay my way too. If not, that would be discrimination wouldn't it. Plus I don't know how the rest of the parents of the kids that go there and pay the big bucks could just sit back and take it. It would just tick me off.

I just about bet that someone else will pay it threw some loop hole.

That would appear to make sense on the surface. But is that penalty defined in Bylaw 10 or 33?

I know Bylaw 10 very well and just reread its penalty section. I now know Bylaw 33 better. Neither has this action as a defined penalty that I can find. In fact Bylaw 33 specifically prohibits individuals from being responsible for fines levied by KHSAA. But there is no 'pay back unapproved monies and your clear' in Bylaw 10 or in the 10 specific penalties defined in Bylaw 33.

Unless I am missing something KHSAA is just making this up. But that seems to be how the infamous 'Case Studies' have come about and arbitrarily expanded or futher defined the formal rules.

Then the question is - how does KHSAA check up on this? Does the KHSAA have subpoena power over individuals bank accounts and financial transactions? What if the individuals challenge this action?

And finally, if the families knew they were receiving excess financial aid - (which would seem to be the case if they received more than the formal KHSAA clearing house approved them for in writing) then did the families 'conspire' with LCA to commit 'fraud'? This is a tough question that may point out why KHSAA does not get tough - at least with individuals. When does 'rule breaking' become 'legally criminal' activity such as conspiricy to commit fraud? I am sure KHSAA with its lack of formal and legal investigative power does not want to open that can of worms.

I asked the question before, But no one responded. How many people work at KHSAA with ties too LCA. Also when is the report going to be public.

I went to St X, not LCA. I received a scholarship, and BTW, I was 5'4" and 110 lbs. Hardly an athlete. My scholie was roughly 10% of my tuition. Then I worked at school in the summers as well, 40 hours per week. Then I applied for a grant which was very small. I then applied for another grant provided by an alumni fund. I signed a form saying I would repay this amount after I graduated. I donate every year to this fund, not much, but something. The remainer of the tuition, which was about $1200 over four years (back in 1980-83) I paid for myself because my family was poor, dad was a disabled drunk, blah blah blah.

Point being, I resent your repeated bashing of any catholics who receive money to attend school, like we are all superstar athletes. I easily could have accepted govt welfare and gone to a free school, but I chose not too.

I see what you are talking about and understand your situation. LCA on the other hand had 16 of 18 athletes getting help.

Does it really matter? You have made your mind up that LCA's supposed connection to the KHSAA brought about the penalty that many think is light. Frankly its probably not anymore your business then it is mine.
