The Old Fairgrounds Stadium is potentially scheduled for demolition in 2008 and 2009, depending on the state budget approved for State Fair Board.

 

Other alternative which KHSAA does not like is to go to mutliple sites , as done in the 60s and 70s.

I had heard they had always chosen Louisville area places due to the low rent, but not that there was any bidding war for the championships. I really can't imagine that the attendance and games bring in alot of money for the KHSAA, seems like a very high overhead affair.

What is the head count at a typical championship game (outside of a X-Trinity game). 6 to 8 thousand? Don't think hotels or anything like that would be an issue, I would guess there are more people at a WKU homecoming than at most games.

 

What would be ideal is a 10,000 to 15,000 seat stadium. My thought would be Kentucky State should build a stadium of that size just for such an occassion (Alumni Stadium holds 7000). It would pump some much needed money into KSU's athletic's program and be held in the capital of the commonwealth. If Georgetown's Rawling Stadium could add in more seating to get it up to 12,000 (currently 5000) you could do 1/2 of the games at Frankfort and 1/2 at Georgetown thus minimizing hotel issues. They are w/ in 20 minutes of each other so going to all the games would be easy. I'd also bet you the hospitality in smaller venues would be greatly increased.

 

My thing is, high school football is best when you really feel like part of the game. Loud crowds, intimate settings and the like. These bigger stadiums are just too big (w/ attendance the way it is). Wouldn't it actually be great to sit in a sold out 10,000 seat stadium for a game. Right up in the action.

 

If that dog doesn't hunt then EKU's would still be a better choice than WKU's. WKU has put a ton into that facility, but it is still too big.

 

The issue is in the 6A games, but I would guess that X and Trinity fans sitting in a sold out 12000 to 15000 seat stadium would be a much better experience than a 1/2 sold out Papa Johns. Neither Louisville or UK (if they open up Commonwealth) need the funds as much as the other schools.

WKU's field will hold about 25,000 once the changes have been made. That is a perfect sized field for this event. Location (the city of Bowling Green is great though) does stink for the most part, but it will be a much better experience from the stands.

I played football for EKU in the 80's, isn't EKU and WKU's stadiums about the same size? It has been a long time. The turf over grass thing would exclude EKU. I agree that playing in a large stadium kills the atmosphere. Somewhere that seats 10,000 to 15,000 would be perfect. Also as centrally located as possible.

Are you all really believing that attendance would suffer anywhere they are played? Come on, if you are a fan you are going to go wherever to see the games. As far as restaurants are concerned, there are more than enough!!!! Too many if you ask me! As far as motels, there are more than enough there also. We do have nice accommodations here in Bowling Green...my goodness, they are good enough for the Corvett Homecoming, the Buick GS Nationals, and a hugh Mustang drag meet each year. In fact, many of the membership of the Buick GS Club of America have experienced their annual meet in other towns, and they would much rather have it in Bowling Green.

It is possible now for someone to drive from EKY to Louisville to make the 3:30 game and drive back home. Possible to do that to BG but add 2 hours each way to that.

If it weren't for the WKY corporate sponsorship of the girls BB tourney, the KHSAA would move it.

With Girls Bball and Boys Bball there is a nice sponsorship fee paid I'm told although I don't know the amount. Football has not been able to attract a big "name sponsor" (yet). But nonetheless, football does generate a decent profit for the KHSAA from the gate proceeds primarily (I think its approximately $400,000). So if the move to WKU would affect adversely the gate (and sorry Mrs. PH but I think it would, I'm just not sure of the extent) the KHSAA would be short in revenue unless they made it up by getting a named sponsor or unless WKU rented the facility for less than UL.

 

In any event, if UL cannot get the Big East to play ball, the KHSAA may not have a choice but to move it to WKU or someother college facility with artificial turf (high school sites wouldn't work because of seating capacity issues). Packed facilities are nice atmospheres, but having to turn down paying customers would not be all that attractive to the KHSAA for good and obvious reasons.

Doing that would forever cement basketball and the Sweet 16 as the kings of KY high school sports. Football is growing in KY and I think that would set us back. I want the football finals to be an event where I can see all the champions crowned.

 

I hate Georgia's system because one of the teams gets to host the championship game on their home field. That is crazy and unfair.

I believe it would suffer. There are very many casual fans who attend the games to see new matchups because it's convenient. I'm one of them. I'll drive the 1.5 hours to Louisville or Lexington but not the 3 to Bowling Green, and I love BG as I graduated from WKU.

I think what it comes down to is, does anyone think BG will attract as many casual fans from the surrounding area than Louisville does? The diehards will go no matter where it is, IMO.

My opinion.

The championships will move to Bowling Green with corporate sponsorship after next year due to Big East Conflicts.

 

By the way, I already have a quarter (To call someone who cares).

Bottom line ... the state has to do something if there is a conflict with PJCS. If so, Bowling Green is as good a choice as any.
