Congrats to Johnson County who defeated the Somerset Future in the DII championship. The DII tourney was highlighted by the early exit of tourney favorites NKY Wolfpack, who lost to Johnson County, Scott Co and the Louisville Suns also fell victim to Johnson County.

Who did the Firehawks lose? I'll have to get an update, my son is out of town this weekend and couldnt attend for the Warriors.

 

The FireHawks no longer have Eric Pouncy, Jarred Swanson, Andrew Sampson, Jacob Heusman, and Cody Gambrell.

 

They lost 2 games today in OT after leading throughout.

 

Best TEAM ball they've played all year. I'm very proud of this team.

I'm an not the least bit suprised that they are the champions. They are absolutely huge. Three guys over 6' with a couple of them about 6'2". The real problem is that their big kids can run the floor and one in particular and handle the ball.

Anvil was happier than the kids, it was a wonderful sight. He is such a good guy, I am so happy for him. It needs to be noted that it was a split Somereset squad that finished second, another outstanding accomplishment.

Johnson really earned it, I thought they beat the 3 best teams in it.

I realy didn't think the Wolfpack where the favorites. There was just something missing from that team. I didn't get to see any of this weekend tournament but it sounded like the NKY Wildcats played well until the final four, then they stood around of offense. In D1 it sounded like the Tarheels laid a egg.

I didn't attend, but heard that the DII champs would have competed very well with the DI teams. Is that a fair assessment?

Johnson can play with Clinton and Fleming. They would struggle with the other 3 just like Clinton and Fleming did. Clinton and Fleming have really good guard play and are a little weak inside. Johnson is a little weak in the backcourt and lack quickness. None of the 3 have any depth. To answer your question, no they could not compete. The Tarheels, Warriors, and Legends are all excellent man to man teams with lots of depth and quickness, Johnson would struggle to get the ball across mid court agaist them. In a half court game, Johnson would be able to compete but unfortunately they use both ends. #21 for Johnson County is a DI player and he could play on that level. Somerset has the best DII squad, including Clinton and Fleming, if all of their players played together and they could not play with the big 3 in DI.

If the Tarheels had a big post player they would beat the Legends and give the Warriors a run for it. The Warriors are probably top 5 in the nation. They are loaded. They probably have too many quality players. The Legends have great athletes that aren't great basketball players, YET. They will close the gap each year.

Thanks guys for all the congratulations. Our team played extremely well in certain games. We played well against the NKY Magic,E KY Royals, Scott Co. Wolfpack,Louisville Suns, and IMHO played our best game against N KY Wolfpack. We never really could get much into our game against Somerset, we were very lucky to beat them. Overall our kids really put out a great effort the last month getting ready for this tourney. We really put them through alot of conditioning and game play.

I also want to thank our players. Braxton Blair(#3 our point guard) really stepped up and played with alot of courage and did everything we asked of him. Seaton Hall(#42) made some really big 3' s that started some great runs for us, he really makes us alot better team with his long range ability.

Trevor SHerman(#22) maybe the most improved player I ever seen within 1 year time, this kid didn't even make our school A team last year. He had some huge games for us (even led us in scoring in the championship game). Hunter Ratliff(#25) played extremely good for us in the tourney, a great scorer and a really great rebounder. He led us in scoring against the Louisville Suns. He has unlimited potential on the court. Shane Hall(#12) completly versatile player, plays everywhere on the floor. He led us in scoring in the tourney. He has unlimited potential in the future. Chanyse Hill (#40) came off the bench and really played well. He came in and we never missed a beat. Bradley Hall , our only 5th grader, come of the bench and played well. He will really be a force on our 6th grade team next year.

In no way could we compete in Division I. We are just a school team. We only had 7 kids at the state tourney. Five of those kid are from Central Elementary and 2 from Porter Elementary. We have 6 elementary schools in our county system that becomes one middle school in the 7th grade. I beleive if they play in the 7th grade state tourney next year they would rank in the Top 5.

In D1 it sounded like the Tarheels laid a egg.

 

I am not commenting that I don't think the Tarheels struggled, but I think you need to give other teams credit. I am not sure anybody expected the Tarheels to beat the Warriors, especially once they added Portwood and the kid from Missouri -- too much inside play. So, inside of saying the Tarheels laid an egg, why not give the Legends credit for stepping up their game?

 

Oh, and on the subject of the Legends, it appears maybe Snyder should have stayed with them instead of the Tarheels. I know he played with the Legends, Warriors and Tarheels pre-Christmas before deciding to play with the Tarheels this year and he might have been the missing piece to allow the Legends to stand toe-to-toe with the Warriors.

I agree, Snyder would have made the game competitive. I am telling you the Legends are coming, just wait a year or two. The Warriors have too many good players, you just can't keep that many happy forever. The Tarheels are a BIG away from being REALLY good. The Legends will get there also. I believe these 3 can compete anywhere in the country in the next 2-4 years.

 

Johnson County kids all played really good. I really think you were better than Somerset and in the last game all of the kids on both teams were so tired it really was more of a survival game. I also would like to compliment the rest of their players, especially the little point guard, he did a great job all weekend and he has improved the most, he was the difference I believe. All of the other kids really stepped up also.

 

The Somerset kids just believe they are supposed to win. I think both of their teams played extremely well. I didn't expect either to do as well as they did. No one in DII can play half court with Johnson County, just too many weapons.

 

I can't get over the lack of big kids in the 12/u division, of course most of them play for the Warriors, Legends, or Johnson, ha!

 

I also believe the NKY Wolfpack would have been tough to beat with McNeil in the DII tourney. The NKY Wildcats also played incredibly well and extremely hard. They really did a good job.

 

I really can't see but 3 DI teams next season unless a couple of the other teams go together or a new one is created in Louisville or Lexington. I learned all I needed to in our little trial run. Size and Depth are what make a DI team and we are a whole lot short on both.
