I think Johnson Central was exposed as simply a pretender tonight. The team that had beaten them earlier, Woodford County was spanked tonight by Meade County 28-7. Johnson Central is a decent team in their class, no more, no less with no shot at a title.

 

Finally some-one has figured it out. JC has been way over-hyped all year and when they play a good team it shows.

What an AMAZING game... My Pirates were fired up tonight.. Dustin was HOT.. I think JC underestimated Belfry. I think that JC was way OVERRATED.. Everyone was saying they were gonna beat us by 5 TDs. Whatever. NOONE will beat us by 5 TDS. Everyone talked about how GREAT JC was... I wasn't really impressed tonight... They got lucky in the 4th and got a couple passes in.. Most of JC's completions in the 1st half was to us... LOL It should have been 28-0.... Bring on the playoffs...

How do you get I am making excuses. I said that Belfry forced JC out of their element causing a bad game. More of a compliment towards the Pirate D than an excuse.

 

I never implied that you were making excuses, nor did I intend to.

 

I was just saying that the better team won, and I would have said that if Johnson Central had won, too.

 

If you want to disect the turnovers we can, and I guess I'll start it off.

 

The first two picks were not horribly thrown passes (they weren't great either), but Belfry's DBs made great plays on both of them. The kickoff return after the first TD was a bad mental error, the kid never should have dove for the ball, but even it didn't turn out to be as bad as Grimm slipping to his knees fielding the kick in the second half. The third INT was a result of the QB forcing a throw that wasn't there, a very bad decision.

 

That's 4 turnovers and as far as I know the turnover ration was 4-to-1 in Belfry's favor.

Johnson Central had Lou. Central down 35 points before subbing early in the 4th quarter. Highlands defeated Lou. Central by 7 points on a late comeback. Is JC 28 points better than Highlands?

 

I wouldn't get to hung up on comparing JC/Central/HHS scores. IMHO, and with no disrespect intended toward LC, but I don't think HHS played the way they're capable of playing. I don't think it was Central taking HHS out of their game as much as it was HHS taking themselves out of playing their game.

 

With that said, when would Belfry and Louisville Central meet in the playoffs? Finals? That should be one heck of a game.

Great job Belfry, both offensively and defensively. Congratulations on a perfect regular season. Andrew's mom is suppose to be taking him to Huntington this morning to get checked out, if I find out anything I will post my results as soon as I get to talk to her. I agree JC did not give up, the Pirates had me worried in the 4th quarter though, but I'm glad we came out with the win.

Belfrey and Bell are the two best teams in the Mountains this year. I hope these two great programns schedule each other in the future. 600 wins between the coaches. This would be a great showcase for mountain football.

I disagree. I think Central played worse vs. Woodford Co., especially considering that game was in Paintsville.

 

IMO, this Pirate team is at least 2 scores better than that Woodford squad.

I saw the JC/Woodford game and they definitely played worse vs Woodford. They made a few mistakes last night, but overall their play was not bad. They just got beaten by a better team.

First and foremost I want to congratulate both teams on a well played, well behaved ballgame. There was a tremendous amount of emotion surrounding this game and both teams behaved themselves like true champions. On to the game:

 

I've said it all along...and I'll say it again...This Belfry defense is the best I've seen from the Pirates since 1985-86. They simply know how to play the game. Very solid tackling...and their quickness...especially on the corners is a thing of beauty. I know some are questioning the pass defense in lieu of what happened in the 4th quarter. Believe me....Haywood knows how to defend against strong passing teams. E-town and O-Cath gave us plenty of practice over the past few years. Give more credit to JC for continuing to put up a fight....than questioning our ability to defend the pass. JC made some nice plays and they deserve the credit for those. If anything...it gives the coaching staff something to work on over the next couple of weeks.

 

While I thought JC was a little shell shocked by Belfry's quickness....don't ever think they're underrated. They have a very nice team. Good size...good quickness. Their size got to us a little in the 4th....albiet, we went a little conservative once Elkins came out.

 

Hopefully, his injury is not too bad and he'll be cleared to play...if not next week...if we win...the week after. But remember this.....Ryan Preston....if he can hurdle his nerves....may be the 2nd best runner on this team in terms of moves and quickness. He's a senior...and he's a great kid. If Elkins is unable to go.....Offensively, we'll be fine. We take a bigger hit, IMO, on the defensive side.....Elkins is an animal on defensve.

 

The mountains should be proud.......one of the top programs in the state...and a very strong, up and coming program.....a mere 60-65 miles apart.....IMO, both did themselves proud. Someone has to win...someone has to lose. This time it was Belfry.....the shoe could be on the other foot in the near future.

You make excellent posts about Preston as well, Haywood called a very bland sequence of plays while he was at QB tonight, but with that being said it was the right move because the last thing Belfry could afford was a trunover, they simply wanted to run the clock down. If Haywood gives Preston the freedom to utilize the full playbook he is a more than adequate backup.

 

With that being said though, Elkins is in my opinion one of the most underrated QB's in the state, and we lose some huge positives he brings to the game.First and foremost, I don't ever remember seeing a Belfry QB who can hide the ball as well as he does. Anytime you watch a taped game of Belfry, the camraman gets faked out at least 6 or 7 times a game, just imagine what it would be like on the field in full motion. Additionally, Elkins brings the passing ability that makes this offense so much more versatile. Even if Belfry doesn't throw a single pass when Elkins is in the game, the ammount of time it focres coaches to ahve to gameplan in practice becomes a valuable commodity.

 

With Preston at QB we still have a great, great offensive team with 4 viable runners in the wishbone.... but the jury is still out on whether it is an offense as explosive enough to win the title.
