OK, first and foremost I want to give JC some credit. The Eagles never quit, and showed a lot of heart not only in the 4th Quarter to attempt a comeback, but in the second quarter when they held Belfry scoreless. JC just happened to run into a buzz saw that played very poised, focused football tonight.

 

Ian Welch is a ballplayer folks, without a doubt the best WR I have seen this year, and also made numerous touchdown saving tackles on defense. Dials was tough on defense as well.

 

Now for the Pirates!

 

First and foremost, what a run defense! JC held to 40 rushing yards, of that nearly half came on a Grimm run late in the game. Belfry absolutely ate up the Eagle's ground game with their quickness, Cory Coleman, Charlie Dotson, Hickman, Lee, and May were everywhere, and when they committed to a tackle ti was lights out.

 

Belfry all in all played excellent pass defense until they seemed to lose their focus with the 28-0 lead. Ratliff was 7-24 for 209 yards, 3 INT, and 1 TD.... the majority of his completions were under serious pressure and were just heaves down the field that the receivers made great plays. Lots of small details with the pass defense that needs to be corrected though.

 

The Pirate line was dominant. The backs ran hard. And as I stated, special teams played a huge role in this game's outcome.

 

As soon as anyone knows about Andrew Elkin's injury please let us know. The kid played a fantastic, poised game. The Eagles couldn't stop the Pirate offense with Elkins under center, his play fakes, game management, and ability to pass makes Belfry as dangerous as they are on offense, also, it's no surprise that Welch started making big plays once Elkins (Belfry's best cover corner) left the game. The score was 28-0 very early in the 4th when he went down, I personally would have been playing him myself as the game was far from over.

 

Charlie Dotson played another stellar game on both sides of the ball. This kid is like a heat seeking missile on defense, and his ability to run the ball at FB and move May to HB makes Belfry ten times tougher to game plan against.

 

All in all... great performance by the Bucs tonight, still some small things that can be nitpicked, but the Pirates proved they are a VERY good team.

Belfry is for real and I am sorry for douting them they are the best team in 3A but even the best teams can have a bad game in the play-offs. Well Belfry you all made a believer out of me. Will see you in week 4 of the play-offs

Some random stats and thoughts.

 

Belfry was the better team and they wore the Eagles out on the line of scrimmage.

 

Pirates had 328 total yards and 302 of it was on the ground.

 

Johson Central had 246 yards, and only 40 of it was on the ground.

 

Of the 206 passing yards, I think about 150 came on 3 plays and 75 of it was a TD where Belfry's corner fell down in coverage.

 

At the end of the 3rd Qtr, JC had a total of 51 yards, and about 40 of that was on one pass play at the end of the 1st half.

 

Central simply couldn't run the ball on Belfry and had to go to the pass. I'm glad they did, even though they had some real success doing it, because that is what this Belfry defense needed. Facing a passing team was just what the Dr ordered and it gave Belfry something to really work on in the coming weeks with Somerset and possibly Breathitt Co on the horizon.

With a 28 point lead, you play everyone you normally would play. The kid made a great play on defense and tackled the runner and they went out of bounds. Not sure how the injury occured, but those things happen and you move forward.

Actually, I said I WOULD have been playing him.... Elkins was playigna phenomenal game on defense and this game was still in the balance at the time. If this turns into a substatial injury (and I pray it don't) then ti will eb evry debatable, but the fact remaisn that it was the first posession of the 4th Quarter and JC was obviously going to be passing the rest of the way, wouldn't you want your best CB in the game if you knew they were going to eb passing?

Hindsight is 20/20 I just didn't see the need to play him on D up 28 pts, but I am not a football coach, especially one that has won 300+ games:thumb:

I will be blatantly honest in my assessment of what went wrong.

 

JC underestimated the quickness of Belfry's defense, the Pirate line was much more physical than the Eagles, and that first long socirng drive Belfry had really drained the life out of a JC team, and coupled with their inability to run, really hindered them until late in the game.

 

Throw in some mental mistakes that Belfry capitalized on (Bobbled kickoffs, downed kicks at the 1 yard line, missed tackles, dropped passes) and it was just too much to overcome.

 

You really can be proud of your Eagles though, they showed a ton of heart and refused to let Belfry put them away. Also, the Pirates evrye asily could ahve been up 28-0 in the first half, but the Eagles continually sold out and helped them keep the game close.

 

As I stated, JC simply caught Belfry on the wrong night. There aren't many teams in the entire state that wouldn't have had fits with Belfry tonight, makign the same errors as JC.

3 interceptions.

 

Belfry just dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and that was the difference. JC couldn't get anything going offensively but they played pretty well defensively. Belfry eventually wore them down a little in the 2nd half and made a couple of scoring drives, again, thanks to the offensive line.

Thanks for the info. JC seems to have a problem in responding to being behind early. This loss is detrimental to the Eagles season, but I have to wonder how they will bounce back next week in the playoffs whether it be at home to Bryan Station or on the road at Woodford Co.

They made 3 turnovers, but they didn't really play bad, UA, and you have to give some credit to Belfry's DBs for the interceptions. They were just playing against a better team. It was exciting too, especially when JC made their run late, didn't you think?
