Smelley cost his team points . He did a nice job on hitting the wide open TEs across the middle. He had 1 or 2 nice passes to McKinley. Other than that, his passes were either off or way too late. Both passes to McKinley in the corner of the EZ in the first half were his fault. Way too late in delivering the ball to a wide open receiver.

If Smelley had been sharp, UK would have lost by 30+ I'd say.

Or he may lack the arm strength to make the throw. I would have liked to have seen UK get more of a push in the first half on the long third downs. You can't let a qb step into his throws.

If your arm strength is an issue (it is for him), wouldn't you then have to deliver it earlier than normal?

The day after this game still hurts becaus the Cats should have won that game...UK fans should be proud of this team though and keep filling up Commonwealth Stadium and support the Cats whether they are 7-1, 6-2, or 5-3 after the next two weeks.

 

This program is on the way up...the future looks bright for the Cats.

I hate to see UK lose any game, but if they are going to lose, I would hope that they don't beat themselves. Last night it wasn't so much what South Carolina did to win as it was what UK did to lose. They made USC's effort an easy one. Personally, I think Kentucky has a better team than South Carolina, but you can't self-destruct like they did last night. Unforced errors will kill you in more sports than tennis.

I have not read all the previous posts and I saw only the last half of the game, but I have to lay some of the blame on UK's offensive staff and their scheme or lack thereof. It seemed that Ky.'s wideouts were smothered by single coverage only and that Woodson was uncomfortable because of it. Joker maybe should have run motion, picks, floods or something to get the WRs open deep. Too much firepower not to use. Maybe an "x and o" man can tell me where I'm wrong.

You'd think we were an "established" national power with the reaction from this loss. I don't understand the reaction to this loss. We got beat by one of the top teams in the conference on the road.

 

When you go on the road in the SEC you have to bring your A game and Kentucky didn't. I don't think South Carolina did either, but two things they did do was protect the football and defend the pass very well. UK had a similar performance against Arkansas...they basically gave away 19 points in that game and were lucky to win. Last night they gave away 14 directly, and Woodson's INT cost them at least a FG...take those away and it would have been a nail biter. As it was, the mistakes were made and we paid the price. Hopefully, the Cats will learn to value the football more...and it would be nice to see them sell out with the run when it's first and goal. USC defended the pass very well...I thought at some point UK should have taken the stance that, "Hey, we're going to run the ball all three times and put this ball in the end zone." Instead they kept mixing a pass in on first or second down, which was incomplete and basically forced them to pass after that.

 

Anyway, this loss hasn't ruined our season. We're still ahead of the curve, IMO. If you'd have told me before the season that we'd be 4-4 after 8 games, I'd have been happy...as it is, the worst we can do is 5-3. It's frustrating from the standpoint that Carolina didn't play that great either, so it was a very winnable game. Kentucky looked like a team that wasn't quite ready for the spotlight. Hopefully, they can learn from it and make it pay off in the next couple of games.

 

Another good post 5 wide! U.K. wins a few games and I understand everyone getting excited but the Cats are not a national or SEC power.

 

Also, there may have been some mention of the coaching and preparation job of the South Carolina staff ad Steve Spurrier but I didn't see it. SC was very well coached as any Spurrier team always is.

UK is a better football team than South Carolina. I know there will be plenty on here that will trash UK, but the only reason they lost was because of stupid mistakes.

 

You are correct in this assessment. Plain and simple. The better team lost.

Ok, after 1 1/2 days of sadness I figured I would finally make a post regarding the game.

 

1. UK's defense played pretty bad when it came to 3rd down. Yes in the 2nd half they played better in the 3rd quarter but still whether it was 3rd & 16 or 3rd & 7 it seemed like the defense always let up. Our DB's were a step late on the TD throw's and they're better than that.

 

2. The Offense seemed scared from the get go. After the fumble by Woodson I think his confidence was already gone. He probably felt as if he had to rush to throw because of O-line issues. The running game did really well and I was impressed with them. Woodson made some scary throws, and the stupid Lorenzen throw. Offense just played really poorly and didn't deserve to win the game, and yet once again the special teams cost us. Little dropping that punt was stupid. If you're set underneath the ball then you should catch it, plain and simple.

 

Moving on to next week. BEAT LSU!!!

I told you that if UK would happen to win I would let you have it for all the smack you talked preseason. You said you would expect nothing less. The fact you need to comment in a UK thread suggests sour grapes. There is a thread addressing the Utah game havent noticed your thoughts in there about your own team. Kinda funny aint it.
