Middle School Basketball

Featured Replies

Of the 15 kids that started middle school basketball as 7th graders in Scott County (SCMS, Royal Spring and Georgetown), I only know of 2 that haven't lived in Georgetown their entire life -- Richardson and Diaw. Both moved here this past summer.

Back when the Georgetown Thunder started when the current kids were in first grade, Portwood / Page (SCMS) and Humphrey / Wickline (RSMS) were on the team. Young and Gilkey (GMS starters) as well as Henderson (SCMS reserve) joined the Thunder as 3rd graders. Humphrey and Gilkey have since left, with Gaines / Richardson joining this year. Downey played with the Thunder in one tournament in 3rd grade, but his parents decided the time involved in AAU basketball wasn't for them.

Here's an interesting note: Tamron Manning, who plays for Scott County High School as an 8th grader, was a part of the Georgetown Thunder when it first started -- when he was in 2nd and 3rd grade.

Where did Richardson and Diaw move from? A couple very nice additions.

Rainman, you guys are very fortunate to have the kids that have moved into the area as well as work with those kids from such an early age. You are also fortunate to live in an area where Basketball is King. Watching the kids grow from 1st grade to High School and college is a great thing and you all had a great tournament last weekend.

Richardson - New Hampshire

Diaw - New York

Both are very solid players! All the way from up in the northeast to little ole Georgetown, KY!

Diaw - New York

Did Diaw live in NKY for a short period? He was playing with a NKY Wolfpack team a few yrs ago as a 4th grader I thought up at SOAS. Then I heard the Central KY Warriors picked him up. Just curious as he was a very good player in the 4th grade and very tall. How tall is he now?

Tubby whats the deal on the NKYMSBL Tourney at Pendelton Co? You got any news?

All school activities for today and this evening just did get canceled w/in the last hour. I have a few calls in to see what might be going on this week.

Last I heard, they were trying to start everything tomorrow night. Once I hear something concrete I will post it on here!

There are some pretty bad spots in the county and w/the weather EXPERTS calling for more snow tonight on top of this ice it does not look good!

My sources are telling me that PC-Sharp will play Thursday night. If Sharp wins they would then play Friday and then Sunday afternoon assuming they win Friday night. So I am assuming that everything is set to begin Wednesday night!

Richardson - New Hampshire

Diaw - New York

Diaw moved from somewhere in Northern KY, not New York. He played for the Northern KY Raiders (I think that is the name of the team) the last couple of years as well as playing for the Central KY Warriors.

Richardson did move from New Hampshire. And, yes, that was a nice pickup for SCMS and Georgetown Thunder (and Scott County High School).

You will probably be really surprised to know that #34 from Scott County (Portwood) and #24 from Royal Spring (Diaw) are both 6th graders.

Hold back or a real 6th grader?

Both Diaw and Portwood are 6th grade holdbacks.

By the way, another point on the success of Scott County, only one of the 5 kids that played is a 7th grade holdback - Richardson. Gaines and Downey haven't even turned 13 yet and Page just did last week. With a lot of teams in the tournament having multiple holdbacks, this even magnifies the accomplishment.

Diaw New York to NKY to Georgetown

I need to sign up for one of those big kids. First Sayre, now Scott County. I would like to be next on the list to get a 6'+ 6th or 7th grader. It appears most of them come from up East, got to get up there.

I am sort of joking, but I guess you do what you have to do!

Word is that the 7th CC Purples play at 7:30 tonight against the winner of the play-in game (Blessed Sacrament/IHM I think).
