Brush with greatness

I was within 8 feet of Richard Nixon after he spoke at Leslie County's new gym in 1978. The gym is named after him, The Richard Nixon Center, or something like that. I remember he commented on UK's win over his alma mater, Duke, in the 1978 NCAA championship game, making some kind of joke about it.

Also, Woody Harrelson of "Cheers" fame, was in our Owsley County Court House in Booneville back in the late '90's, charged with planting marijuana in neighboring Lee County. He did it as a publicity stunt to promote the raising of hemp as a commercial crop. One of our BGP members, Atticus7, was the prosecuting attorney in the case. One of our locals shouted at him as he was entering the court house, "Woody, if you need anything just holler at me."

Adolph Rupp (I was very young and was in awe, still am glad that I had the chance to meet him)

Pete Rose

Johnny Bench

Kyle Macy

Don Gullet

I wish that I would have had the chance to meet Cawood Ledford.

I would love to meet Bill (Mr. Wildcat) Keightly one day.

I forgot about Don Gullett. I used to ride horses on his farm, as a youngster. Gene Bennett, a scout for the Reds, introduced me to him....soft spoken and great guy.

The biggest celeb I have had the honor to meet is BIRDSFAN

Then Tony Danza

And still holds the single game scoring record for Kentucky high school football (which is way more important than that pro baseball stuff).

The thread title said "Brush with Greatness" not "Brush with Superiority".

Before retiring at the ripe age of 48 I traveled quite a bit in the states & internationally. I was constantly running into famous people...Carrot Top, Ray Charles, Mr May of The Chippendales, Oscar Robertson, Tony Randall, Bill Murray, Pete Rose, Jackie Gleason, Chris Evert Lloyd, Tony Bennett, Dana Carvey, Patti Labelle, Payne Stewart, Matthew McConaghey, Soupy Sales, and Jerry Clower.

 I'm a legend in my own mind. :thumb:

I had the chance to meet and talk to Julius Erving this weekend at a pre-Derby party. Very good person.

I met Mohammed Ali in the lobby of the Sealbach in downtown Louisville. He was having a bad day w/ his Parkinson's, but he was very gracious and took time to allow a humble fan a moment - THE GREATEST. I also met Larry Bird, and have met several Nascar folks, including The King, The Intimidator, and Jeff Gordon; but Ali was the coolest.

I was at the same functions listed above Professor. Also, Robert Urich at the Marriot in 94. Don Ameche in Lexington in 89 in an elevator. This year Jeff Fischer of the Titans in Ballard County duck hunting. George H. W. Bush at Farris farm.

My mother in law kept asking me at the Marriot, "Who is Robert Urich?" We were 5 feet from him and the only other table. She asked 50 times. Embarrassed me to death. Finally, I whispered he played Dan Tanna on Vegas. "Dan Tanna????" I don't know Dan Tanna...I thought you said he was Robert Urich????" Geez.

I met Tom Green at a Reds game once.... lol

Eric Thomas... Lee Johnson... my friend shook Chad Johnson's hand and I was standing right next to him... (just went on a Bengal kick there for a sec)

Leonard Stokes, Jason Maxiell, Eric Hicks, David West.... 2 of them are in the league now...

uh... there might be a few more...

Many might not know of him but I was fortunate enough to meet Kyle Maynard. Before you say "who", I first saw him on HBO's Real Sports, he has no limbs and he was one heck of a wrestler in HS. He's now a motivational speaker. The day we saw him the wife and I were at the CVG airport on our way to DC. I told her I had to go to the restroom and on my way I saw a guy in a wheelchair, I knew I had seen him before, then I thought to myself, that's the wrestling guy from GA. When I come back from the restroom I see him and my wife striking up some conversation, she introduced me (I watched that show about 3 times), I said hello and told him how much I loved the piece. He had first class seats, and I figured he would wait until most were off the plane before he left but he hopped out of his seat, got into his chair and with no help pushed his way up the jetway (about a 20% incline) like it was no problem, the kid is a great story.
