Brush with greatness

I was within 8 feet of Richard Nixon after he spoke at Leslie County's new gym in 1978. The gym is named after him, The Richard Nixon Center, or something like that. I remember he commented on UK's win over his alma mater, Duke, in the 1978 NCAA championship game, making some kind of joke about it.

Also, Woody Harrelson of "Cheers" fame, was in our Owsley County Court House in Booneville back in the late '90's, charged with planting marijuana in neighboring Lee County. He did it as a publicity stunt to promote the raising of hemp as a commercial crop. One of our BGP members, Atticus7, was the prosecuting attorney in the case. One of our locals shouted at him as he was entering the court house, "Woody, if you need anything just holler at me."

Have you ever seen the Appleshop film, "The Big lever"? About when Nixon came & spoke at The "Nixon Center" when all the scandles where going on with him & the scandles in Leslie County politics (Judge C. Allan Muncy @ the time.). Pretty funny movie. BTW, remember how hot it was in that gym? Remember Nixon's underarms? haha

Aretha Franklin performed down here at Centre earlier this year. I work security at the Norton Center and after the show I got to go onstage and hand her a bundle of flowers.

I even got a kiss on the cheek.

I guess everyone knows who my most famous person was now. That sure was four years of fun and work at the same time.

I met Steve Zahn, he's the only "celebrity" I've met. I didn't really say much to him, I just asked him how he was doing, and he said "good". I was at work, he was just passing through, didn't want to bother him.

I got Osi Umeyiora's autograph at a football game his rookie year before he made it "big".

I've met Lance Burton, Pete Rose, Joe Nuxhall, Paul Tibbets, Johnny Bench, some Reds players, and a few local celebs. That's about it.

My mom met George Clooney at the Rosemary Clooney festival, and was lucky enough to get her picture taken with him. That's pretty cool. Arm around her and everything. She was happy for months .

I also have met Arnold Palmer at a golf outing in Cincinnati one year, can't remember what year, and got his autograph. He was putting stuff in his car and I just walked over, and he was very nice and gracious.

And to add to that, I have met and had pictures taken with Johnny Bench.
