32 reported killed in shooting at Virginia Tech

Featured Replies

With all the reports of closeness to the situation, how many people on here attended VT or have family that do? It sounds like we have a few.

Girlfriend's brother is a soph. and was in the engineering building when the shooting took place. She and I have been together for five years, so, while not family, he's pretty close.

Absolutely disgusting! Its a shame no one is allowed to be armed on campus, it might have changed the whole outcome.

I'm all for right to bear arms, but in a situation like this, that would likely only make the situation worse, with no one knowing what was going on.

Not likely in a situation where someone like this walks into a classroom or other area where a CCW holder sees what is going on. Like I said...it might have changed the outcome...we will never know and unfortunately, there are a lot of places that we will never know. Remember the case of the shooter in the shopping mall just a few months ago...thank goodness there happened to be an off duty cop eating lunch with his wife....

I agree with you in that regard, someone comes in a room and starts shooting and you SEE the person in front of you, like the mall shooting. I'm just thinking as far as a random student in their dorm room, they hear about it, get their gun and go from there. That's the part that would bother me.

Cause you know someone would do that with the best intention, but they grab their gun to go help and then ANOTHER student sees them with a gun, etc, etc.

While being armed might have stopped this situation earlier in the killing spree, no telling how many other incidents might have escalated into shooting incidents that otherwise would not have.

I agree it could be a catch 22. The issue is...its not about grabbing a weapon and going to help out. Just because you have the ability to carry a weapon does not make you a police officer. You only have the ability to save your own life if threatened in that manner. If you are planning on acting as law enforcement by going after someone...you need to rethink the idea of carrying at all because the courts will not be on your side when you try to explain that one.

Things like this are just so stinking irritating.

Regardless of what anyone thinks, this could happen anywhere, anytime. It's just a sorry time we all live in. It puts everything in perspective, and makes you wonder if you will see your loved ones again, which it should make people let others know just how much they mean to you and all, as you never know.

This is a shame. But as a former Residence Hall director I have to ask why the campus didn't go on lock down after the first shooting?

I am wondering the same thing. This is horrible news...absolutely horrible.

I thought I read they were on lockdown for 2 hours after the reporting of the first shooting. I am surprised though that classes weren't canceled for the remainder of the day after the first one.

I just hope the President has been informed that the evil doer or doers if it was two shooters was killed. Likely had no terrorist background, nor was he with al queda. I hope he understand we don't need to blow up another country to solve this problem.

Why do some of you feel like you need to take cheap shots at the President in this thread?

I agree, this is unnecessary.

I know we have a seperate forum for all it, so I won't go into any further. BUT as someone else did on here, I'm just trying to lighten the mood a little bit. I know now is not a time to tell knock, knock jokes and make light of a horrible tragedy. At the same time, taking a step back and sharing a laugh can make healing a little bit easier.
