32 reported killed in shooting at Virginia Tech

Featured Replies

True to form, the incident is not hours old and the media is passing blame and running to judgement on what happened. CNN seems to be laying blame to lack of training for SWAT, local police and campus security.

People are going to run to the view that schools need to do more. But unfortunately, you cannot prevent murder or it would be obsolete at this time. Sadly, things like this will happen and continue to happen.

That doesn't mean that schools shouldn't ignore realistic things that they can do to hamper or make it harder for things to happen, but you cannot prevent it from EVER happening again.

And that is sad.

The second wave of shootings should have NEVER happened. Sad. Very sad.

How should they have been stopped?

Well the second round happened 2 hours after the first. Don't you think something could have been done??? Cancel classes...get extra extra security...something.

My understanding is that the first shooting was with two victims with it being domestic in nature. The press conference going on right now says they have no proof that the two shootings are tied together.

IF the first shooting was the shooting of a single victim, why would their be any assumption that a full out shooting as it occurred would have happened.

The Chief of Va Tech just said that they felt the first shooting was an isolated shooting.

The students were notified about the first shooting but students were in transit, they had reason to believe the shooter had left the campus.

I don't think shutting down the campus would have prevented anything. This guy who did this had a mission, if they were to shut down the campus he would have went to another place to go on his rampage, this guy wanted to kill, and kill in huge numbers, and he would have done that today somewhere.

Plus they thought it was a domestic incident, and that it was over. Plus like they said, what do you do with all those 1000s of students? But, as I said, this guy was going to kill, and was determined to kill in huge numbers.

They said 26,000 students with students in transit, some already in class. In a public school in KY, if there is a shooter, students are to be KEPT IN the classroom instead of being released. Makes it easier for police to deal with and understand who is the shooter and who is not.

Police chief just made the point that a lockdown best occurs in the classroom.

Agreed, But they thought it was a domestic issue and that it was one shooter and that he was long gone by then, and that everything was over.

And that is a reasonable assumption. You see domestic shootings as it started in the news every single day. And that is horrible, but where our society is.

No reasonable person would jump from a domestic shooting we see all the time to the way it ended up.

Also, it seems that the shooter may have went and prepared for the massacre in the two hours in between. Wasn't there a two hour difference between the original shooting and the massacre?

Press is drilling the Vtech President and police chief and trying to put them on the spot that the second shooting is their fault.

Key word is "thought". If they thought it was a domestic issue, they probably had a description of the guy from either roommates or neighbors, and they knew he was armed. Also, what made them believe he left campus? Did someone see a guy fleeing on foot or in a car? Was he a student? There aren't enough details available right now, but you have to question how the first situation was handled.

Trying to lock down a college campus is a completely different ballgame then a high school. There are students, faculty, staff, and visitors roaming on tens of acres of land at a major university versus a controlled population of one to two thousand at a big high school.

I find it very hard that UK could completely lock down their Engineering Complex, much less the entire campus if something like this happened. They don't have the staffing/security to do so and college campuses are so much more spread out then a high school. Virginia Tech has at least 2-3 times the engineering undergrads of UK as well so scale that as well.....

A very sad day...

Agreed. I just hope the press, and others realize this. I mean if the guy wanted to go on this rampage then why didn't he do it after he killed his girlfriend? Why not start shooting others on your way out? I t just seemed it was a single killing and the shooter was gone.

Why? I would almost guarantee you that somewhere in Cincynasti that there will be a domestic shooting in the next 48 hours. Should Mayor Mallory lock down Cincy when it occurs that there is some gunman out there ready to go on a rampage and shooting people in the streets of Cincy?

I am not trying to be flippant in a horrible situation, but what would reasonably make a person go from a domestic shooting with 2 victims to the massacre that occurred?
