April 16, 200719 yr Press is drilling the Vtech President and police chief and trying to put them on the spot that the second shooting is their fault. The press are idiots, the police don't know all of the facts yet and these morons are already pointing fingers.
April 16, 200719 yr Also, what made them believe he left campus? Read my last post. I agree, right now we don't know enough.
April 16, 200719 yr Why? I would almost guarantee you that somewhere in Cincynasti that there will be a domestic shooting in the next 48 hours. Should Mayor Mallory lock down Cincy when it occurs that there is some gunman out there ready to go on a rampage and shooting people in the streets of Cincy? I am not trying to be flippant in a horrible situation, but what would reasonably make a person go from a domestic shooting with 2 victims to the massacre that occurred? Comparing the city of Cincy to a college campus is like apples and oranges. They're two totally different things. This is a college campus, I can understand completely if classes are cancelled after a SHOOTING, whether it is domestic or not. Im not accusing anyone on VaTech's staff of doing anything wrong or making any wrong decisions, but I would not think that closing the campus after a shooting would be unreasonable.
April 16, 200719 yr The press are idiots, the police don't know all of the facts yet and these morons are already pointing fingers. I apologize to the press that we have on here, but things like this is the reason why I don't like the press at all. The press has transformed from reporting the news to assigning blame as soon as possible. It has to be someone's fault, rather than just the criminals, so they want to be the first to assign blame.

Two totally different situations. We're talking a shooting on school campus in the dorms and a random shooting within city limits. I'm not putting any blame anywhere as there just aren't enough details about the situation. I'm just saying something doesn't seem right about the way things occurred.
April 16, 200719 yr Trying to lock down a college campus is a completely different ballgame then a high school. There are students, faculty, staff, and visitors roaming on tens of acres of land at a major university versus a controlled population of one to two thousand at a big high school. I find it very hard that UK could completely lock down their Engineering Complex, much less the entire campus if something like this happened. They don't have the staffing/security to do so and college campuses are so much more spread out then a high school. Virginia Tech has at least 2-3 times the engineering undergrads of UK as well so scale that as well..... Actually one of the reports I read said VT's campus is 2600 acres. Now if someone can tell me how you lock down 2600 acres and 26,000+ people they are smarter then most.

April 16, 200719 yr Read my last post. I agree, right now we don't know enough. I'm curious to see if he was a student or not, and what made authorities believe he left campus.

The press has transformed from reporting the news to assigning blame as soon as possible. It has to be someone's fault, rather than just the criminals, so they want to be the first to assign blame. Which is why I call them idiots, and in this case, the press involved for the most part are idiots!

Im not accusing anyone on VaTech's staff of doing anything wrong or making any wrong decisions, but I would not think that closing the campus after a shooting would be unreasonable. As the police chief has made the point, the time this has happened was the time that students were in transit to the classrooms. He made the point that it is a 20-minute walk across campus, close to 17,000 students were in transit in their vehicles or already there and milling about campus. The process and reality to cancel classes where students are informed in a timely manner is a huge task. And as the Police Chief pointed out, if they wanted to lockdown, the best and easiest way is to get them in classes and then keep them there instead of cancelling classes and having some portion of 26,000 students milling about on campus with nothing to do. If they had cancelled classes, I too think it would be reasonably move. But to say that they were at fault by not doing it, I think is unfair.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I am not blaming anyone at this point. I'm simply saying I don't believe canceling classes after the first shooting would have been unreasonable...they may have had information that led them to believe classes were safe to resume...I don't have that information...which is why I choose not to blame anyone. I'm just still in shock over this. This is awful.

April 16, 200719 yr what made authorities believe he left campus. I would guess that they determined that since most (if not all) killers don't want to get caught, and that he left and was long gone, based on the fact he didn't go on a rampage in the first shooting. I don't think that I ever heard of a killer come back after a shooting to kill more people.
