April 16, 200719 yr I'm not disagreeing with you. I am not blaming anyone at this point. I'm simply saying I don't believe canceling classes after the first shooting would have been unreasonable...they may have had information that led them to believe classes were safe to resume...I don't have that information...which is why I choose not to blame anyone. I'm just still in shock over this. This is awful. While I agree that HS is different from a college campus, the comment by the Police Chief that the best place to lockdown students is in the classroom, leads me to believe that the mindset is similar. Get them in the class where teachers can supervise and keep them out of the way. We have been told over and over that students roaming the hallways during a lockdown is the worse thing for police. 1)they don't know whether the student is a potential victim or the criminal; 2)you can evacuate classrooms to areas that you KNOW are safe instead of people running to areas the gunmen might be in. 3)students milling about in the hallway are easy potential victims.

April 16, 200719 yr I would guess that they determined that since most (if not all) killers don't want to get caught, and that he left and was long gone, based on the fact he didn't go on a rampage in the first shooting. I don't think that I ever heard of a killer come back after a shooting to kill more people. It is very weird. Are they 100 % sure there aren't two shooters?

April 16, 200719 yr Actually one of the reports I read said VT's campus is 2600 acres. Now if someone can tell me how you lock down 2600 acres and 26,000+ people they are smarter then most. I never realized how big the campus was until you stated this, and then I went to their website. The main campus is over 2600 acres with 26k plus full-time students, 100+ buildings, and an airport. http://198.82.160.236/where_we_are/maps/documents/vt_main_map_lowres.pdf
April 16, 200719 yr Which is why I call them idiots, and in this case, the press involved for the most part are idiots! IMO VA Tech and the police should have just made statements so early, and tell the press that there will be no questions until they fit all of the pieces together. This day in age we all want answers now, and the press wants to give the full story now, not later.
April 16, 200719 yr There could have been more done, there could have been less done, they could have handled the situation perfectly. No one knows. As with any tragedy everyones views are going to be different and a certian group of people are going to catch the heat. The VT administration will catch the heat for this one. Could they have done more ? I dont know...Acts like this are unexplainable and can never truly be prepared for.
April 16, 200719 yr This is why I choose not to blame anyone on VaTechs staff for this. I think they made what they felt was the best decision, and that's all they can do. I'm not disagreeing with you at all. Ironically, schools are jumped on all the time for overeacting to events at schools across the country. And here a school does not overreact and this massacre occurs. I look at things like this that when evil wants to occur, it is hard to prevent evil from occurring. Something got in this person's heart to turn their thoughts pure evil. And that is a very sad thing.

April 16, 200719 yr How will they go about identifying the shooter. They said he took his life, so you can make a safe assumption that the face may not be in the best of shape. They said he had no identification on him. How long and how will they go about identifying the shooter?
April 16, 200719 yr This is a horrible situation and every parent's worst nightmare. The press has once again made me so mad - they haven't even found out who most of the dead are and they are already pointing fingers. I feel sure the school did what they thought was right and to start acting like it was their fault is IMO unnecessary. I feel so sorry for the family of all the victims and I also feel sorry for the shooters family. None of them will ever know a moment of peace for a long while and that's a sad statement to make. A statement from a young man who was in the room being shot at about says it all. When asked what he was thinking of while the shooting was going on he said, "All I could think of was my Mother and sad she was going to be if I died". What a horrible thing for a child to have to think of and what a wonderful thing for a child to say, that when he thought he was facing death, his first thought was of his Mother. What a great kid this woman has.
April 16, 200719 yr You want to hear something sad and alarming. Guy on CNN is making the point that these shootings come in a cluster with copycat shootings. That is reasonable to think that once one has happened, we may see more in the coming weeks.
