Yes Tubby was a decent coach but he single handedly put himself & the UK program into these past 2 HORRIBLE seasons since he recruited every single player on the floor!!!!! He got paid a boatload of $$$$ for 2 straight mediocre seasons. Not mediocre in UK eyes but mediocre to EVERY DECENT PROGRAM (8 seed & 10+ losses per season).

His out of league schedule was full of Prairie View A & M, La Tech, St. Louis, Idaho State, Arkansas Little Roch, Pacific, Fordham, Jacksonville, Auburn, Grambling State and Winthrop. Best out of league win without looking at the NCAA tourney was either Auburn or Winthrop.

 

They did play UCLA and LSU but lost both of those games.

 

Gave the big 12 and SEC as a wash.

 

If UK's schedule was littered with this type of teams, UK wouldn't have had a double-digit loss season in the past two.

Texas A&M and UTEP were moribound programs, though. He had to start at the bottom and build up. The non-conference schedule couldn't be too tough or the losses pile up and A&M isn't interesting. Kentucky should be built up to where a tough schedule is no problem. It didn't used to be, but now its an excuse for the previous coach to lose 10+ games and people shouldn't be upset.

 

By the way, if the Big XII and SEC are a wash, then Gillispie's conference record is better than the previous coach over the last two years. Why knock him?!

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Texas A&M Director of Athletics Bill Byrne was contacted by University of Kentucky Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart at 7 p.m. Thursday requesting permission to speak to Aggie basketball head coach Billy Gillispie about the head coaching position with the Wildcats.

I will have to wait and see. Seems like he became a hot commodity after a SINGLE season. He has not had much success in the NCAA tournament and doesn't have much to hang his hat on.

 

What he does will determine whether I am happy or not. I don't know much about the guy except that their isn't a lot to know about the guy.

 

True. But he took over programs that were terrible and made them much better, and quickly. He brought in top 15 recruiting classes to Texas A&M! I am very happy with this pick. He was my #2 guy behind Donovan as far as who I wanted.

Absolutely not. As I have said in other posts, I know nothing on this guy and don't know why everyone is treating him as the next coming of Adolph Rupp.

 

Asked for information about why they are so excited for a coach that has never made it to the Elite 8, only been head coach for 5 seasons and is he going through a Tom Crean type of career made on having a very good player making a run and not doing anything else. (Read somewhere that besides Crean's run with Wade has not made it out of the first round the past 5 seasons.)

 

They provided information, I am digesting it and asking questions for a good healthy discussion.

 

Trying to find my way on whether I am happy or not about someone I know very little to nothing about.

Honest question here. What is to be overjoyed about? What in his career makes him a better choice than Tubby? He has had one good season and that good season resulted in a Sweet 16 appearance.

 

I look forward to studying as a coach a new style. Seeing new plays and the like.

 

Just don't see what in his record has some people so excited. I would love for someone to point it out to me because as I have said, not much on this guy to know.

 

They talked about him being a Bill Self protege. This is the same Bill Self that a stat was ran about him in the NCAA tourney that he has the most Elite 8 appearances WITHOUT a victory.

Great pick BUT isn't it easier to take a bad program in a good conference, get one great player AC LAW and make a nice run rather than to take a program like UK and have it in the top 5 each and every year?

 

Does taking a bad program, playing an easy schedule and having a good season translate to taking a top program and getting it back and keeping it at a top 5 level?

 

I hope it does. I just don't know anything about this guy and besides parts of the UL game haven't ever seen a game of AM's.

He seems like he REALLY wants to be here. I believe he will do all he can, and more, to win EVERY game UK plays. But just want to remind some who may not realize this...UK will not win every game just because they have a new Coach.

UL fans are going to have a hard time hating this guy.

That is correct. Tubby left the cupboard pretty bare.

 

I don't really think UK's cupboard is that bare. They have to get a couple of inside players to improve, but the potential is there in Stevenson and Carter and the perimeter positions are stocked pretty well with Crawford, Bradley, Meeks, Jasper and Porter. A pick-up of a strong inside player would make UK very good next year...........possibly the best team in the SEC.
