I like others have said wasnt sure about the hire but after seeing an listening to him I think they made the best choice. His personality and enthusiasm really made Tubby seem kinda bland. I think he is going to be great.

 

Plus, he already knows a thing or two about beating the instate rival which is always a plus!

Your loyalty for Tubby is great, if you were a member of his family, best friend, or on his coaching staff but here is why I am excited -

 

He is flat out a better recruiter than Tubby comparing the amount of top 20 classes each has had in the past 5 years.

 

From watching them play 7-8 times this year he is as good of a coach on the defensive end that Tubby was and far superior on the offensive end.

 

He acts like he likes the game and can actually speak without going "um" 42 times during an interview.

 

He doesn't bench players for shooting shots with 20 secs left on the clock, if it is a good shot.

 

He likes the media.

 

He is fully dedicated to basketball, unlike Tubby.

 

He has 3 years in my book to make a turn around because we have a roster that Tubby put together that is going to have a hard time beating Georgetown College as of right now.

How long till the BG Bashers come out...

Honest question here. What is to be overjoyed about? What in his career makes him a better choice than Tubby? He has had one good season and that good season resulted in a Sweet 16 appearance.

 

I look forward to studying as a coach a new style. Seeing new plays and the like.

 

Just don't see what in his record has some people so excited. I would love for someone to point it out to me because as I have said, not much on this guy to know.

 

They talked about him being a Bill Self protege. This is the same Bill Self that a stat was ran about him in the NCAA tourney that he has the most Elite 8 appearances WITHOUT a victory.

 

 

What did Tubby do before UK hired him. Prior to his hiring at UK he only made it to the sweet 16 with Tulsa and Georgia.

Great post with information I was looking for but you didn't need the sarcasm of either being a member of Tubby's family or coaching staff, nor did you need to take potshots at Tubby's speaking style to provide the information.

 

I like hearing about that on the defensive end. I disliked Barnes as a choice because it didn't seem his teams played any defense whatsoever. I knew Billy D's did.

 

Liking the A & M media spotlight and the UK spotlight is two different things. WKYT had an interesting comment on this. They said they saw a personality from him today that frankly they did not see from him when A & M was in town for the tournament.

 

And since you bolded it, Tubby put together a team that went 19-0 in the SEC. NO OTHER COACH HAS EVER BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT. Tubby put together a team that won 30 games. THat has only happened 9 other times in UK's history without Tubby being the coach. Tubby went to the Elite 8 three times with teams he put together.

Not much difference in the pre-UK coaching of Tubby and Billy G.

 

NCAA success is similar. Records at similar level schools. One had 6 years of coaching experience while the other had 5.

 

I heard Jim Rome calling out the lack of experience by Gillespie and thought about calling in to point out that Tubby had about the same amount of experience but was in the car and didn't have the facts.

When joking, I usually try and through in a or a or a combination of :sssh: or maybe even a :lol: to show that I am just being playful and joking rather than taking a shot.:lol: :sssh:

 

I agree that Tubby was not the speaker that Pitino is. And Gillespie handled his press conference today very well.

 

As I said other places, the comments about his home town having only a water tower and the varsity coach is excited about the 4th grade class coming through IMMEDIATELY made him identifiable with a good portion of the state.

 

For me, I never liked Saint Rick's speaking style. I always felt like he felt he was talking down to UK fans and that they didn't understand so much about basketball.

He also tied the longest FF drought in UK history lost to Vandy the first time ever at Rupp and 4 straight times as well as Florida 6 straight times and half his seasons were 10 loss seasons...........
