Trying to talk some logic, with Marty....

He is so fond of Marty, Marty's opinions and Marty's humbleness, too.

HERE, HERE Marty!!!!! Where I'm from they would call that hitting the nail on the head!

I understand but follow the logic here of a MLB Manager.

 

Asst. Coach Smith to Mgr...."Dunn is up, should we pitch to him with runners on"....Mgr. reply, "Who is hitting behind him"...."who, let's make him beat us and I doubt he can".....

 

"No, pitch around Dunn and see if we can get him to chase a bad pitch"....

 

Mgr. to all coaches...."I know Dunn will chase a bad one, since he feels like he must drive in runs, or the fans will get on him"....

 

 

How about.... Let's throw him a fastball and get ahead then throw him breaking balls low and inside until he strikes out or walks.

I like Dunn, he is one of my favorite players but the thing that bothers me about Dunn's hitting is that when he leads off an inning and they have that huge shift on...just make opposite field contact! I mean a bunt would get him on base.

I think mechanics in baseball are VERY SIMPLE, but are often viewed as complex. I hate when people say, "Lean back and throw the ball, or lean back and give it some gas."

Thanks GT. I've been wandering what those stats are. If Dunn is a true professional he knows what his shortcomings are. I believe he wants to get better and I think he knows some changes need to be made. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Wow, I feel so loved. As you'd guess, I have many thoughts on this subject:

 

1. I think Marty has become a caricature of himself. As I've said before, his attempt to steal the spot-light doesn't bother me, but I find it funny. Marty has MANY, MANY flaws but you don't see players publicly come out and say things like "I've never seen Marty sober after lunch" or "you know Marty is lying when you see his lips moving". Maybe they should.

 

2. Saying Dunn strikes out too much is one thing, calling him lazy and stupid are a whole different kettle of fish. I personally find him to be neither, but that is me.

 

3. AverageJoe'sGym, if you are going to use Baseball-Reference to drop one-liners like "It can't be a good sign when the number 1 player with stats similar to him is Ron Kittle" at least give the whole story. The player most like him at his age is Daryl Strawberry. Then Pete Incaviglia and then Reggie Jackson. Hmm? I'd take the first guy off of blow and the 3rd is in the Hall-of-Fame. Not quite the dim picture you were painting.

 

4. Many experts believe that hitters enter their prime at age 27. Guess how old Dunn is this year? Let's see what this year looks like. If what we have seen is the pre-cursor to his best years than we should be in for a treat.

 

5. He has put up consistently very good numbers as compared to his NL brethren the last few years:

.....A. 4 of the last 5 years Top 6 in games played

.....B. '04 and '05 he was Top 10 in total bases

.....C. last 3 years top 7 in Home Runs

.....D. 4 of the last 5 years top 6 in Bases on balls

.....E. '04 and '05 he was Top 6 in extra base hits

.....F. 3 of the last 5 years Top 10 in times on base.

.....G. 3 of the last 5 years Top 10 in intentional walks (are the other NL coaches crazy?)

.....H. Last 3 years Top 7 in AB's per home runs.

 

6. His career on-base pct. is .380. That is very, very good. For the record, Dave Kingman's on-base pct. is .302. Yeah, those two are close.

 

7. I think Dunn is a guy that is tough to label. He's a high on-base guy, but he is not fast. He hits a lot of home runs, but he doesn't drive in enough runs. He walks a lot, but he strikes out a ton. That doesn't mean that I wouldn't want the positives that he does bring.

 

8. Marty criticizes a guy that comes to work everyday and says he should be a 50 home run guy. Does he realize how hard it is to hit 50 bombs? It has been done once in the history of the Reds....once. Give me a break.

 

9. Like I said last year, I wish the Reds would trade him for his sake. He honestly doesn't deserve the constant negativity that he gets from fans and now broadcasters.

 

10. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when Dunn sees Marty in Sarasota.

I'd be willing to wager Dunn hasn't been shagging fly balls in left to get better defensively. If he hit like Manny I wouldn't care, but he doesn't.

I'm also glad Dunn, doesn't have other characteristics of Manny, but that is another matter.

I'd say Marty will pat Dunner on the back and say, "Big fella you are going to be the reason we contend or not. I've seen a lot of great ballplayers in my life and I truly believe I'm talking to one of them right now, if he is willing to turn it up a notch and accept the challenge."

There are 10 million reasons Adam Dunn needs to have better numbers. There are problems. I'm all for the positives. I was in the Diamond seats when Dunner hit a 3 run bomb to win the game. I've always been a huge Dunn fan. However..... What is your response to the negatives? Why have they gotton worse for the last 3 years? Why was Dunn not "fit" last year?
