2026 Mr. Football: Off-Season Discussion

That’s a great point but also not a solid endorsement for Driver for Mr. Football.  It’s hard enough to get the award from the TE spot, but if you don’t have to pass the ball then he needs to either get running opportunities or be the best defensive player in the state.

It was just a point for the one game comparison that was pulled. He had solid offensive and defensive stats for this past year, and they’re only going to be better this year.

Give me Seneca Driver. Unreal force on O and D. Also punts. Nothing the young man can’t do.

Driver is as well which I think plays in his favor for the race. 67 tackles, 5 INTs with 2 returned for TDs, 10 TFLs, and 3 sacks. All playing LB for the first time.

No one knows better than @DevilMayCare. This is his arena.

I would think the two leaders right now are Seneca Driver & Zane Johnson. Seneca may have the best shot of all seniors to play on Sundays. Zane may lead his team to 4 state titles in 4 seasons as the starting QB... has anyone else ever done that?

Best wishes to all the young men in this conversation. Enjoy that last season of Friday Night HS football!

Johnson is probably the leader pre-season. Being the QB for Trinity and possible 4 time state champ - that will be tough to overcome. Not being a top tier recruit is the one thing that might cost him votes. He does have smaller school FBS offers, but isn't ranked in the top 15 recruits in KY.

Do you think if he gets a Power 4 offer, he is Mr. Football?

I coached Zane's Dad in HS at Mason County, Jordan Johnson, and have worked with Zane going back almost 10 years. I am admittedly biased! I also think he has some special intangibles.

One thing I would say is pretty close to a dead heat, Seneca Driver and Zane Johnson both make the people around them, much better. That is a great intangible to bring to a football program.

Both are elite football players.

Too early to say Johnson wins with a P4 offer, but it would make him hard to beat. He is a QB, plays for arguably the top program in KY and will probably win another state tiltle.

But if Fryman accepts his offer from Notre Dame or UL, and/or Driver commits to one of his P4 schools, they are in the hunt. If they win state titles and put up great stats, anything can happen especially since they play on both sides of the ball.

Ja'Hyde missed the 1st 2 playoff games with a hamstring injury.  He often times would play 1 or 2 series in the 2nd half of games and that was it.  The only 2 non-running clock games in which Ja'Hyde played a full game, he went for 8 / 153 & 1 KO return TD against Ryle, then went for 15 / 175 and 3 receiving TDs vs. Bowling Green.  And he just committed on national TV at the All-American bowl what will be the defending college national champions next year with IU.  Plus, if CAL is able to pull off another state title, that will be his 4th state title as well.  I would say he deserves to be in the conversation with Driver, Fryman & Johnson.

I think Jeffrey Duggins at Boyle County was 4 for 4. He won Mr. Football also.

Duggins was 1999, 2000 (may be the best football team I have ever seen) & 2001.

Brandon Smith was 2002 & 2003.

So is this based on the current/senior season, or career achievements? If I have a breakout senior season,  win my statiscal categories, and am my team's clear MVP... And we make a strong push to the 4th round of state, do I still get proper consideration?

But at the same time, I had to wait for a growth spurt, wait for my turn behind previous starters.. And am a media unknown until the summer before my senior season, I have no chance? Just wondering.

I have not looked at the criteria, would love to know the answer as well. I would think if it is limited to SRs then it should be based on SR year excellence.

Would think Ja’Hyde is the frontrunner. He looks like he is playing a different sport than everyone else. Barring injury, he is poised to put up comic book numbers this year.

Recently committed to UofL. I don't think we have a singular front-runner right now, but Brown is well positioned among the favorites.

Don’t count Tyler Fryman from Beechwood out from the hunt, granted he might be drafted for baseball first.  However, Fryman has been limited on touches, could you image if he played an entire game week after week in season and has as many touches as the other guys in the mix.

He will get his chance in the scrimmages and early games to put his talents on full display.
