If that was truly the reasoning behind it I’m sure Coach Dantzler’s choice of words may have been worthy of a dismissal in some individuals eyes. I only say that because I remember this sort of situat

  • Listen, if the Central band doesn’t get to play then I’m not going to watch Central football play. They are one of the best and most unique things about Kentucky high school football.

All things aside, I know Central hasn't been back to the mountain top in a while but I don't think you can put all that on Dantzler. They have had a couple really good teams but just had CAL in their path. Last year they arguably had the 2nd best team in 3A.

This year has been disappointing but primarily it is because this is the probably the youngest Central team I have seen.

Now if you want to nitpick, when Central is at their best they are leaning into a nasty defense that has size, physicality, speed, and the ability to make you pay for any turnover. When Central is at their best they usually aren't the most impressive team on Offense, but they almost always have a back who can grind you into a pulp 8-10 yards at a time until they pop a couple big runs, then they have a couple WR's who can beat you making plays down the field. Central's defense is probably a year away from looking normal but on Offense this is probably the weakest I have seen them since the early 2000's. They have a couple Sophomores with the ability to hurt you with the ball in their hands but everything else that you identify with Central is kind of missing, especially with their running game.

Dantzler's son is a VERY talented Safety who I could see playing at the next level. Will be interesting to see where this all ends up. Remember Dantzler was kind of a surprising hire coming from Louisiana.

Personally, if I am Central I think my first phone call is to Atherton's Anthony White. I also have Murray's Melvin Cunningham on speed dial.

Atherton is watching this conflict between football and a band with a rather large smile on their face.

From the Courier article it sounded like the coach was upset at the band and was upset he was told by the AD he should ask the band director “nicely” not to play at inappropriate  times. Coach then got frustrated at the AD because it’s the AD’s job to have that Conversation.

At least that’s what I gathered from the CJ.

That is BIZARRE.

It should be the ADs job to make sure his squads follow the rules.

There has to be more to the story!

Offensive coordinator Lonnie Oldham is evidently handling things as the interim head coach for the moment.

Former head coaches in Jefferson County never retire or completely disappear until "death do us part!"

I have never understood the sense of entitlement that bands (their directors) have at football games.  Coach Dantzler is 100% "in the right" on this.

This type of thing has happened near me recently where the PA was playing music coming out of a TO and the officials go to the HC to make it stop. Any HC does not want to worry about this during a game. Any HC would immediately become frustrated... especially if they have to report this to the game manager(principal, AD, etc) multiple times. The refs will then penalize the home team 15 yards for something essentially out of their control. I see the frustration and would also be frustrated... Not sure what was actually said and obviously that is inexcusable.

I agree with posters who opine that there is likely something else at play here.

I am a huge admirer of the entire Central High School environment. They are the pulse and lifeblood of that downtown community. If Coach Dantzler exploded and was abusive to the band, that is highly inappropriate, but on its own I can’t see it being a dismissal-level offense for an administration that manages the types of day-in, day-out challenges that Central deals with.

The band (and their dance team) is the best I have seen in the State of Kentucky, and it’s not close. True Grambling/Southern U. style performances. On game nights, they line up at the school and march down Chestnut to the field six blocks away, their music reverberating throughout the entire downtown. Very intimidating. Worth a touchdown home field advantage at least. And the fried fish sammiches on the visitor sidelines are elite.

I wasn’t going to go to the first round playoff game against Bardstown, but now I am. Park at the awesome little church behind the field that opens up their lot for a love offering, fish Sammie’s x2, and listen to that drumbeat the whole game.

Couldn't have expressed it any better.  I love going to Central for a big game.  Last time I told myself only 1 fish sandwich but wasn't able to keep it to 1.  Just love the entire atmosphere.

It's been since 2003 since Lonnie was a head coach in Jefferson County.  He's been to Cincinnati, Oldham County, Jeffersonville, Carroll County and everywhere in between, but just made the jump back to Jefferson County at Central just recently.

Coach White will not go to another JCPS school. He has it made at Atherton.

And has left a trail behind him.

I wanted to try it so bad a few weeks back but by the time I went to concessions they were sold out!

Was the music still playing when the teams lined up for the next play? I don't see a problem playing music during the timeout.

Next time go early and just go ahead and get two.  Just saves time from standing in line twice.
